..."now he's doing his bit for England like the rest"... What a great, INCLUSIVE thing to say. In spite of Formby's race-oriented humor, in spite of Mr. Wu's Chinese "otherness," the bottom line is that the character of Mr. Wu is unquestioningly BRITISH. This concept is refreshing, considering that during the same time we were sending our own (Japanese Americans) people to internment camps precisely for their perceived sense of "otherness."
That's a lovely comment. Makes me proud to be British. But remember, there isn't a nation in the world that has nothing in its history to be ashamed of, certainly not Britain. And we wouldn't have won the war without the Americans.
Yes, the fact that Mr Wu became an Air Raid Warden points to War time Britain. He would have joined the ARP (Air Raid Precautions) then. Like Mr. Hodges in Dad's Army shouting "Put that light out"!
Wow! That awesome Asian Mr Wu really got around! After the war I heard he went back to the Chinese laundry business....became a partner with the famous Wong brothers. They had a killer slogan: TWO WONGS CAN MAKE IT WHITE!
@1930RedRed his song about Mr. Wu as a window cleaner premiered in a film in 1940 so I'd assume probably in 41 during the height of the blitz or perhaps a little later in 42
@mkcwebmaster niot sure of the year but i like this song better than the window cleaner by far and also bernard cribbind hole in the ground if you like this song
Antfossy, it's a pun. Try to remember that this song was made a really long time ago, back when it was far more appropriate, if not normal, to speak in such a way.
There is a Mr. Wu at my school, I sang this to him the other day! lolage

Not sure exactly, I have it on an album of popular British war songs, so all I can say is 1939-1945 ;)

From memory, I believe it was recorded on 31st May 1942. Great song - one of my favourites. You can see me performing it on You Tube.
