Most cars in the US are automatics, no possibility to go down in the gears except reach for the brakes which of course means no control on your steering either. At least with a manual you can at least go down in the gears even if you're still going to impact. I've just fitted winter tyres for the bad spell of weather we're having and I can tell you the car is cruising through the snow and ice. Braking distance has really reduced and tyres are not going hard with the freezing temperature.
