I would agree that using standard FMJ rifle rounds (other than 5.56) for home defense is probably not a good idea, 5.56 being the exception because it fragments. If you get fragmenting ammo (open or ballistic tip), you can go bigger, but I would not recommend anything more than 5.56 or 5.45 if you can help it. Research has actually shown that shotgun and handgun rounds will actually over penetrate more than 5.56 due to 5.56 fragmenting. Now, this is assuming you're using buckshot--anything less

Hey pete about your shotgun sights you may have an alternative. They are not ghost ring sights but, there is an alternative. If you go to kimberamerica(dot)com they sell meprolight shotgun,pistol, and rifle sights. It may save you some trouble and money.

Hey brother, typical spread from #4 buck shot is only 2-3" at 21 feet or so and even less with a choked barrel. Ya still need to be "pinpoint" in that you need to cover the target with the front sight...no differently than the way you'd use any other single projectile weapon platform. Anyhow, no big deal but it's a common shotgun myth so I thought I'd toss it out there. It was 110F where I live in AZ today...it's like it's never gonna end!
Yo..Pistol Pete... You should check out the Mossberg 835... Thug... 3 1/2 " chamber... 20" barrel that has sights on the vent rib, barrel is ported and has a choke system, several different stock configurations... it's awsome. Nice pooches...they look spoiled.;-)

Pete. Don't lie to yourself. Shotguns and pistols will go thru walls no problem either. But yeah I would rather use a shotgun than a rifle due to the nervous factor makes aiming accurately very hard. Better to have a spread gun. Definitely don't use slugs. The main thing is know what's behind your target when it comes time to fire.

I agree, pistol grip shotguns are not my cup o tea at all. Also if you were to fire that thing in the house be prepared for auditory exclusion and confusion. I have a Benelli m4 but I think if anyone is interested in a pump 12ga the Mossberg 500 (Thunder Ranch Special) is a good option at an affordable price.

I think you might need the new front sight. The front sight that comes in the Ghost Ring set is much taller then the sight on the barrel you have now. I have the same barrel on my Mossberg.

Pete, if you are worried about flash mobs, the AR is the way to go. The penetration isn't as bad as you think. If you get some 40gr or 55gr ballistic tip ammo like the Hornady TAP, it doesn't penetrate through your house like a 7.62x39 would, it yaws and fragments. It will fuck somebody up good though. Do some research on it, it's good stuff.

I'd also recommend if you're using a 223/5.56 for home defense that you stay away from speciality ammo like the v-max and what not. M193 will present the least risk of collateral damage, and M855 will give you a little more mild barrier penetration at the cost of having a larger risk of not fragmenting. At point blank indoor ranges I don't think you're going to have issues with either failing to frag.
I agree regarding pistol grip only shotguns. I use to own one myself, and I would definitely only go with one that has some kind of shoulder stock on it.

pete i would not go for the sight, i shoot trap with a rem 870 and the bead is just fine for me. i hit 2 inch moving targets at 25-35 yards, you can hit a human size target at 10 yards just fine.

I think you might need the new front sight. The front sight that comes in the Ghost Ring set is much taller then the sight on the barrel you have now. I have the same barrel on my Mossberg.

Pete, if you are worried about flash mobs, the AR is the way to go. The penetration isn't as bad as you think. If you get some 40gr or 55gr ballistic tip ammo like the Hornady TAP, it doesn't penetrate through your house like a 7.62x39 would, it yaws and fragments. It will fuck somebody up good though. Do some research on it, it's good stuff.

i feel you with the pistol grip shotgun. i really like the look tho i bought a mossberg 500 sp and i love it. it has a 6 postion stock that makes it small enough where you can use it like a pistol grip and i added some othere things also like a heat shield.if you get time check it out i just posted a vid and tell me what u think

I have no idea where this whole "home defense rifle" thing came from but allot of people are doing it lately. Personally i think using a rifle for home defense is stupid and will lead to major over penetration. However if you have a rifle and thats all you can afford right now then more power to yah. Just be careful. Ill stick with the one sound every criminal runs from, and that is the racking of a pump shot gun.

I'd also recommend if you're using a 223/5.56 for home defense that you stay away from speciality ammo like the v-max and what not. M193 will present the least risk of collateral damage, and M855 will give you a little more mild barrier penetration at the cost of having a larger risk of not fragmenting. At point blank indoor ranges I don't think you're going to have issues with either failing to frag.

pete i would not go for the sight, i shoot trap with a rem 870 and the bead is just fine for me. i hit 2 inch moving targets at 25-35 yards, you can hit a human size target at 10 yards just fine.
