  • it's a stOOpid question, but why are there 3 nilssons in this vid?

  • please remaster this and release it so I can own it! I watch this video at least once a week!

  • Honestly, I watch this video all the time. It's a shame post people my age (20's) have no clue who Harry is. I've been listening to him since the mid 90's when I stumbled upon one of his CD's that my mom had. He was a true musical genius. Something that is nearly impossible to come by these days.

  • Harry. I love you. Thank you for letting this be than more 256 chars.

  • Is this TV special available on DVD? I saw it as a teen about 1 o'clock in the morning back in the early nineties on TV, when I was trying to go to bed, I was mesmerised. Never really followed him up other than a cheap greatest hits shortly afterwards, will now.

  • the fifth Beatle.

  • I wonder why he never got/stayed more popular - what a talented and gifted guy!

  • @michel031257 He didn't take care of himself when and so lost his voice earlier. But he got married had children and lived a good life before he died. A lot more then can be said of some of the most talented artists then continued until they burned out and died.Good question.

  • Harry was soooo gifted. A master when it came to overdubbing his voice, he really knew how to harmonize with himself. And with a voice that fell somewhere between John's and Paul's...he practically outBeatles the Beatles. :)

  • Nilsson was a super talent! Who else could do this? I love his treatment of the Everly hits!

  • genius.

  • Yes, the fifth Beatle

  • @mopbrothers He would have fitted in perfectly!

  • a fan for about 40 years, with or without drugs, has always turned me on....

  • smoke pot and listen to harry nilsson

  • god bless u harry!say hi to john for me...

  • I miss this performer most of all. Gone so young...I'm so glad I've always been his fan.

  • Incredible! Such a great voice and to think that virtually no one under the age of 45 even knows who he is! I love Harry!

  • @doctortjm199 I beg to differ. I know him!

  • @doctortjm199 I'm 23 and am a very big fan of Harry

  • Yeah. Mainstream now is so crazy limited to like 3 things. Rap, pop-with-that-horrible-fake-electro-beat and-auto-tune(which you said) and whoever is the latest american idol. Oh and "young country" which is slick, over produced and not "country" at all. Pop with the ever so slightest nod to country in a lyric.

  • harry hilsson 2 people dislike they must be crazy!!

  • God, I love this man - especially the most mirthful version of him on the right.

  • I'd like to see Lady Gaga attempt something like that. But it ain't gonna happen!

  • @Mikemaniax

What, sing 3 part harmony? Use rudimentary special effects? grow a beard? I am as much a Nilsson fan as you dudes are, but c'mon.

  • @TheHypehat No. She can't sing 3 part harmony without Autotune! Special effects doesn't factor into Nilsson's talent. And as for growing a beard? If it's true that "she" has a penis, then "she" can do that. But it wouldn't make her more talented.

  • @Mikemaniax As much as I dig Harry, It's not really a 3 part harmony if all 3 on in the same key and same octave. It's just a sing-along.

  • @loungelizard5000 Yeah, it varies. At points it's 2 or 3 part harmony, and at others it's rounds, octaves and unisons. But still it's all Harry and not Auto-tune. And that's what today's music is lacking. People being able to do harmonies without help from a device.

  • @Mikemaniax I see your overall point. However I do like to remind music fans when they complain about "todays music" something. They are really complaining about todays POPULAR music, which is garbage shoved down kids throats by corporations. But there is still great new stuff out there from varied artists. Everything from Diana Krall and Norah Jones types to Jack White doing stuff with old legends like Wanda Jackson and tons of creative, original indie bands. Good music is not dead.

  • @loungelizard5000 You're right. But Harry Nilsson was more or less mainstream, and good music isn't mainstream anymore and that's what pisses me off. But you're absolutely right with all of the artists you mentioned.

  • @loungelizard5000 wouldn't that be symphonious?

  • @Mikemaniax Can we just have one video on youtube and enjoy it for what it is without some idiot bringing up Lady Gaga or Justin Beiber? Just ONCE ???!!

  • There's music and then there's Harry, pure genius this man was. Every so often I get on these big Harry kicks that last for months at a time where it's impossible for me to listen to anything else, his music makes me feel so damn good! Not to mention all the different stories about him, It seems like I learn something new (usually hilarious) about him everyday. A true legend!

  • I'm glad there has been interested reawakened in Harry thanx to the documentary about his life, sad as it is.

What a talent. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

  • The Everly Brothers popularized it, although I think another songwriter wrote it.

  • His contemporaries were in awe of him. Magical voice.

  • No one better is right, Serp. His contemporaries were in awe of him.

  • no one better, no one. missed and dearly loved

  • I love "Walk Right Back" already! Does anyone know if he covered it or wrote it originally? When I tried to find the song, I didn't find him but someone else.

  • God, his voice kills me...breaks my heart every time I hear it...there has never been another voice like his and there never will be...

  • Did I just listen to god sing?

  • @NathanGregory2011

Actually Nathan, no it wasn't God. It was someone called Harry. God, albeit in His human form, was crucified 2000 years ago so it's said, and we're still waiting for His return. At least the table is set ready as 10CC once pointed out.

    Colin

  • @colinbaker62

Nathan used the word "God" as an exclamation. This is no place to post what we think about religion.

I do agree with what u say, but not here while we listen to this genius!!!

  • @colinbaker62 Yes, and Life is a Minestrone!

  • The man is a genious, may he R.I.P

  • this is so adorable and yet utterly awesome.

  • love him started listening early 70s

  • ...and he did all his own stunts. ;-)

  • i want you to know Harry that since YOU walked out on all of us,.. that ,... that music isn't good anymore .....

    nilsson ; 1941 - 1994

  • I wish Harry Nilsson narrated my life. But with less drinking and spouse abandonment subjects.

  • Love it!

  • If you were tripping while watching this, it must have been intense...

  • Those two no dirks probably do not even realize that they are all the same guy, or that he wrote the songs. Great imagination. Great man.

  • @bassbob42 I like Nilsson too, but he did not write any of these songs.

  • i can and will watch this vid tons of times....LONG LIVE HARRY

  • How could 2 people not like this?!

what a lovely piece of film

  • @yerfavoritegreg I TOTALLY AGREE...i saw those 2 thumbs down and laughed..this man wrote these songs he is a genius

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR PUTTING THIS ON HERE....I LOVE HARRY AND HAVE NEVER SEEN HIM LIKE THIS I ALMOST GOT A LITTLE EMOTIONAL BUT MAN ITS GREAT....LONG LIVE NILSSON

  • He was a genius.

  • I reckon a young Phil Collins must have been taking notes when this first aired, because the 'You Can't Hurry Love' promo featured him portraying all the backing band - see also Andre 3000 in Outkast's 'Hey Ya' promo and Paul McCartney's 'Coming Up'.

  • He played in many ways on the same level of the Beatles.Just my opinion.

  • @TheZepmeister The Beatles themselves agreed.

  • Three Harry's is better than none.

    Excellent vid. <3

  • Oops 1:15

  • SOOOO AWESOME!! I love that extra vocal harmony "eeap" at 1:17!

  • Flawed genius

  • "Cleverly" is most certainly pointing at Everly Brother's direction, and so is the medley. Harry was clever, witty, funny and made great music.

  • Cleverly?

  • The Ceverly Brother ;-)

  • Huh?

    Do you mean "Everly" Brothers?

  • Oh, Harry! Don't we all miss you!

  • wierd

  • wierd has never been so pimp.

  • Oh my god that is WONDERFUL!! Lord I miss Harry, did he ever release this on album?

  • @KevinR1138 A version was released on the Aerial Pandemonium Ballet album its different than this performance but still classic Nilsson.

  • Pure genius! Needs to be released as a dvd & cd.

  • this reminds me of his "You Can't Do That", he's a genius at merging songs. The original masher upper.

  • One of the greats, a true innovator.

Thank you Harry for the joy you gave,

    Keith

  • Thank god he didn't take his music with him... He left it with us.

  • AWESOME! Still miss him.

  • Просто-ЖОПА!

  • this is MUSIC

  • Come on BBC 4 show the doc as part of your legends series

  • hmm... what a brilliant man =] we will always enjoy his music for many years to come =]

  • This is absolutely fabulous.

    Harry was great, loved him.

So sad he's gone, but he will always be in my memories.

I love this so much, thanks poster.

  • And I always wondered what was better than one Harry singing, and I found it out here.

    I love it.

  • That's awesome

  • Nilsson and Lennon are the two most original musicians.

  • I could watch Harry perform all day. What a genious. The sad part was that he always wanted to be creative and the record industries wanted to do what they do today... Rinse, Lather, Repeat as in rewrite the same old song. Harry definitely walked to the beat of his own drum. You gotta love it.

  • The guy was a master at this kind of thing, layering his vocal and himself and making it look easy.

  • a strangely mournful musicality.... and a great diversionary don't-take-us-so-seriously gag at the end?

  • Was a version like this of "let the good times roll"

    ever released on an album?

  • Yes - Nilsson Schmilsson. It also has a wonderful song called "I'll Never Leave You" Harry's best - imho. Wonderful album.

  • @apeshitdig It's on the "Nilsson Schmilsson" album.

  • @TheStockwell Technically yes it is, but this is a different version so I don't consider it to be on Nilsson Schmillson really.

  • Comment removed

  • Love that gag at the end! Fantastic recording!

  • one of lennons's best mates.

  • I thought there was nothin left of his videos. MAN, thank you! He made a living singing with him self. JUST GREAT

  • 1:30 = i lol'd

  • A one off. I can't think of one artist of his time that had that much originality. Amazing.

  • man, I miss harry nilsson. His music moved a generation. What a gift. His music just makes me smile.

  • Thhis was great fun...terrific!! Thanks for posting.

  • A glorious performance! Harry Nilsson was (and still remains) a one-of-a-kind powerful artist. His eclectic style and massive vocal range could not be beat. Lennon and McCartney listed 'Nilsson' as their favorite artist when they first arrived in America (at a press conference). Indeed he drew much of his own style from their playbook, and so stands as a gifted composer in his own right with solid influences. Strong enough to harmonize with himself, making him a one-man-band! Thanks for sharing.

  • Thanks so much for putting this up...it was such a treat..boy, do I miss his music.

  • Only a guy like Harry Nilsson could do something like this! Brilliantly goofy!

  • ENORMOUS!!!

  • He is amazing

  • Amazing! Thank you so much for this!

  • They don't make them like Nilsson anymore.

  • Thats true. I really like his gansta rap phase Boo boom homie.

  • Thanks for posting

  • 娘子快出来看上帝!!!

  • love it.His voice is so soft and you have to just sing along...

  • Thanks for the vid-- it's wonderful! This put a huge smile on my face (that doesn't seem to want to budge just yet).

*Sigh...* I love Harry Nilsson. :-)

  • I LOVE THIS!!

Did Harry write Cathy's Clown? What album's it on?

  • Nope, the Everly Brothers Did

  • I love it!!:)

  • I love it too! Thanks for sharing! ;)

  • oldiebutgoodies57, I stand corrected. Harry was a great talant that the world lost too soon. Great song thanks for the info!

  • WOW THESE GUYS ARE GREAT!!! IDE LIKE TO MEET ALL THREE OF THEM!!! On second thought...

  • Wow! Great rare cover, made my day.

  • Is it really a cover when you are the writer of the songs?? Just wondering...

  • No, it certainly wouldn't be, but since Harry is neither Sonny Curtis, an Everly Brother nor Sam Theard / Louis Jordan (respectively) then this is pretty much a cover -- Thrice the Harry, Thrice the cover...

  • It takes a real talent to sing the harmony of the Everly Brothers. But you knew that already

  • I would like to know who is with him.

  • I'll give you a hint. His name is also Harry Nilsson. And the third guy - his name is Harry Nilsson, too.

Those BBC producers; aren't they clever?

  • ; (

  • what's the name of this song? Can't find it on itunes.

  • songs...see "(More info)"

  • Cathy's Clown, Let the Good Times Roll and one other song.

  • Walk Right Back (Everly Brothers)

  • Harry can still make my day. Great video... Thank you so much for sharing.

  • he was............

  • lol great video!

  • harry is in heaven this morning playing piano for arrow.

  • Will it harm my computer?

    :-P

  • Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha...very funny...:-)

  • jerk

  • I've always been the only one I knew who knew Harry Nilsson"s music. So wonderful to know I'm not alone.

  • Could sing in three solid octaves, played piano, guitar (and apparently harmonica) and wrote some of the best songs of our generation. We miss you, Harry!

  • Where is this BBC special...why isn't it on DVD?

    I want more HARRY!!!!!!

  • How did they do that ? What were the people in the audience watching anyway ? I take it the "little" person was Harry live right ???

  • An age-old camera effect called back-projection is how they got three Harry's in one shot. the whole show was taped in bbc studio and the audience was made up of whoever showed up that day.

  • @jaredgetsacookie I had thought that Harry only agreed to do the show as long as it was done in an empty studio. The audience footage was stock footage.

  • Notice that the short Harry is in perfect focus, the Harry in the green sweater is a little blurry, and the Harry in the blue sweater is even blurrier still. That's called generation loss. A movie within a movie within a movie.

  • yeah that's interesting. ah, sweet analog technology!

  • don't diss nilsson. analog can kicks digitals ass any day

  • Harry ....we miss ya!! Eddie's father

  • I am sucker for this type of music..being 25 I grew up on my mom's rock records. I used to play Nilsson all the time.

  • thanks for getting this back up on youtube. this is a classic.

  • They don't make them like Harry Nilsson anymore.

No wonder he was a favorite of The Beatles. Great video!

  • Lovely. We grew up on the Everly brothers. As someone said elsewhere, Nilsson had a pure velvet voice. We miss him.

  • Very imaginative! Thanks for posting this video. And thank YOU, Harry, for being Harry!
