Honestly, I watch this video all the time. It's a shame post people my age (20's) have no clue who Harry is. I've been listening to him since the mid 90's when I stumbled upon one of his CD's that my mom had. He was a true musical genius. Something that is nearly impossible to come by these days.
Is this TV special available on DVD? I saw it as a teen about 1 o'clock in the morning back in the early nineties on TV, when I was trying to go to bed, I was mesmerised. Never really followed him up other than a cheap greatest hits shortly afterwards, will now.
@michel031257 He didn't take care of himself when and so lost his voice earlier. But he got married had children and lived a good life before he died. A lot more then can be said of some of the most talented artists then continued until they burned out and died.Good question.
Harry was soooo gifted. A master when it came to overdubbing his voice, he really knew how to harmonize with himself. And with a voice that fell somewhere between John's and Paul's...he practically outBeatles the Beatles. :)
Yeah. Mainstream now is so crazy limited to like 3 things. Rap, pop-with-that-horrible-fake-electro-beat and-auto-tune(which you said) and whoever is the latest american idol. Oh and "young country" which is slick, over produced and not "country" at all. Pop with the ever so slightest nod to country in a lyric.
@TheHypehat No. She can't sing 3 part harmony without Autotune! Special effects doesn't factor into Nilsson's talent. And as for growing a beard? If it's true that "she" has a penis, then "she" can do that. But it wouldn't make her more talented.
@loungelizard5000 Yeah, it varies. At points it's 2 or 3 part harmony, and at others it's rounds, octaves and unisons. But still it's all Harry and not Auto-tune. And that's what today's music is lacking. People being able to do harmonies without help from a device.
@Mikemaniax I see your overall point. However I do like to remind music fans when they complain about "todays music" something. They are really complaining about todays POPULAR music, which is garbage shoved down kids throats by corporations. But there is still great new stuff out there from varied artists. Everything from Diana Krall and Norah Jones types to Jack White doing stuff with old legends like Wanda Jackson and tons of creative, original indie bands. Good music is not dead.
@loungelizard5000 You're right. But Harry Nilsson was more or less mainstream, and good music isn't mainstream anymore and that's what pisses me off. But you're absolutely right with all of the artists you mentioned.
@Mikemaniax Can we just have one video on youtube and enjoy it for what it is without some idiot bringing up Lady Gaga or Justin Beiber? Just ONCE ???!!
There's music and then there's Harry, pure genius this man was. Every so often I get on these big Harry kicks that last for months at a time where it's impossible for me to listen to anything else, his music makes me feel so damn good! Not to mention all the different stories about him, It seems like I learn something new (usually hilarious) about him everyday. A true legend!
I love "Walk Right Back" already! Does anyone know if he covered it or wrote it originally? When I tried to find the song, I didn't find him but someone else.
Actually Nathan, no it wasn't God. It was someone called Harry. God, albeit in His human form, was crucified 2000 years ago so it's said, and we're still waiting for His return. At least the table is set ready as 10CC once pointed out.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR PUTTING THIS ON HERE....I LOVE HARRY AND HAVE NEVER SEEN HIM LIKE THIS I ALMOST GOT A LITTLE EMOTIONAL BUT MAN ITS GREAT....LONG LIVE NILSSON
I reckon a young Phil Collins must have been taking notes when this first aired, because the 'You Can't Hurry Love' promo featured him portraying all the backing band - see also Andre 3000 in Outkast's 'Hey Ya' promo and Paul McCartney's 'Coming Up'.
I could watch Harry perform all day. What a genious. The sad part was that he always wanted to be creative and the record industries wanted to do what they do today... Rinse, Lather, Repeat as in rewrite the same old song. Harry definitely walked to the beat of his own drum. You gotta love it.
@apeshitdig Yes, BUT! The original question was "Was a version LIKE THIS of "let the good times roll" ever released on an album?" The "Schmillson" version is, absolutely "like this." Also, it's a different version. See? We BOTH get to be right! (And to think they say all YouTube does is start fights.)
A glorious performance! Harry Nilsson was (and still remains) a one-of-a-kind powerful artist. His eclectic style and massive vocal range could not be beat. Lennon and McCartney listed 'Nilsson' as their favorite artist when they first arrived in America (at a press conference). Indeed he drew much of his own style from their playbook, and so stands as a gifted composer in his own right with solid influences. Strong enough to harmonize with himself, making him a one-man-band! Thanks for sharing.
No, it certainly wouldn't be, but since Harry is neither Sonny Curtis, an Everly Brother nor Sam Theard / Louis Jordan (respectively) then this is pretty much a cover -- Thrice the Harry, Thrice the cover...

Harry Nilsson multiplying right before your eyes? Just use Harry-B-Gone and get rid of those pesky multi-octave singing pests! In case of Harry infestations spray Harry-B-Gone liberally in the air in a circular motion, 6 to 12 inches away from the nearest Nilsson. Harry-B-Gone lasts for days and won't harm your furniture or the ozone. Harry-B-Gone refills available in both Lime and Cocoanut scents!
Could sing in three solid octaves, played piano, guitar (and apparently harmonica) and wrote some of the best songs of our generation. We miss you, Harry!
An age-old camera effect called back-projection is how they got three Harry's in one shot. the whole show was taped in bbc studio and the audience was made up of whoever showed up that day.
@jaredgetsacookie I had thought that Harry only agreed to do the show as long as it was done in an empty studio. The audience footage was stock footage.
