  • I love the puppet he looks so.... demented

  • they changed it to cgi one in phantom menace 3d

  • puppet looks like it has a hangover

  • The puppet had more character.

  • CGI Yoda > Puppet...

  • if they keep re releasing and changing the films then younger people wont see how star wars has changed over the years!!!!

  • The CGI model may look good, but I personally believe the puppet is the better actor.

  • CGI was the worst thing that could happen to special effects. They should make more movies with stop motion and puppets.

  • TPM yoda looked awful. the CGI is a big improvement. HOWEVER, the yoda from TESB still looks the best! too bad they cant just redo the puppet itself

  • puppet looks more realistic. its the same with jurassic park. only the bits with the puppets look better, animations suck nowadays

  • The puppet looked really..odd. The old one looked more realistic. The only time i was happy to see them CGI something :(

  • Good Change!

  • The old Yoda looks like something taken from lazy town lol

  • when yoda gets older, he loses the mobility in his legs so a person's arm is inserted into him to compensate.

  • I vote for Yoda, any one else?

  • I think they did the right thing by adapting the Phantom Menace Yoda to the looks he would then going have in AotC and RotS anyway, because he seemed really old in TPM already which didn't fit his future self. By that, I'm not saying CGI is generally better than a more old-school approach - either one can be really good or really bad. In this case, it turned out well enough with the added CGI parts, although he's generally a bit too greenish in all three prequels compared to the classic trilogy.

  • "Empire strikes back" had the best Yoda. These are shit

  • @Justas923 The puppet is the same on used in the old films

  • @MultiTobyProductions Doesn't look like it. Well, personally to me

  • @Justas923 I think it might be, it might just be that were seeing him in good light

  • I liked the yoda puppet from empire strikes back, but CGI yoda is the best yoda ever. phantom menace yoda looks like green dried up poo.

  • No matter, they both don't look like the original Yoda...

  • I was so pissed when i first watched my blu ray copy of the phantom menace and saw that they changed the amazing Frank Oz Yoda out with shitty animated Yoda

  • I prefer the original puppet, and no it's not a lame line, it's actually filled with truth. Why do you think all religions say to not fear?

  • But at the end of the day, it's still a really lame line.

  • @drockthecasbah THIS LINE IS THE BEST FUCKING LINE IN ALL OF STAR WARS!

  • @iwannabepresident This is a pretty dumb line. Its even dumber when you consider that Yoda is supposed to be wise. See you cant arrange different emotional states into some sort of logical pattern. They dont work like that

  • That old looks like from lazy town :DDD

  • Normally I vote for puppets over CGI but I have to say, that puppet in The Phantom Menace really did look terrible, considering that thing had a budget of like 12 billion dollars.

  • I'm not a huge fan of CGI Yoda. At all. But, I gotta say he at least looks better than the puppet used in Episode I. Why didn't they use one that looks like Yoda in Empire and Return? But I will say that I like how the puppet Yoda moves better. Maybe I'm just nostalgic. CGI Yoda looks too stiff; maybe cause he's an insert. But I guess CGI Yoda fits better with the Yoda of the following two films.

  • That's not puppet Yoda!

    That's just Yoda on crack.

  • old one is better

  • better is the old puppet ...

  • Wait???? The new Yoda looks like he did in Revenge of the Sith! So now we have a episode 1 and 3 cgi Yoda looking one way, and an episode 2 cgi Yoda who looks different! What in the F*ck

  • @ThePizztanoShow I imagine their update the CGI Yoda in AOTC when it comes out in 3D.

As to the movie, not really holding my breath.

  • eep!

  • the puppet is a gremling

  • The puppet is ugly, but its expressions have more emotion than the CGI.

  • The puppet in Episode V and VI looked great. This one didn't. The CG Yoda looks awesome! But I understand why they did a puppet. Inmagine that back in 1999 they had made a CG Yoda! It would have looked crap xD And did anyone notice that Yoda is so much different in the prequels? His voice and just his whole character is different. I prefer the prequel Yoda :)

  • The Yoda puppet in TPM looked terrible, because they wanted to make Yoda look younger, without stopping to think that for a creature that lives to be 900 years old, 30 years is peanuts to him.

And somehow, they made the CGI Yoda look even worse.

I do not approve, simply because of the lacklustre quality.

  • @Jensaarai1 And just how long is a "year" in the Star Wars Universe? I mean, a year is based on how long it takes a planet to circle its host star. Throwing out the word "year" in a setting with countless planets that have all sprung life is a little ambiguous, wouldn't you say? That said, I do agree with your post, just wanted to point that out cuz I'm bored.

  • @442hoeky Just to reply to your bored post in an equally bored manner, the EU established that the Star Wars galaxy does have a standardized calender thats used galazy-wide, and their year is about the same length as ours.

So if you can live to be 900 of our years old, 30 of our years aren't really going to matter much. 30 years for Yoda would be like 2 or 3 for us, so he shouldn't be looking any younger in TPM than he does in TESB.

  • @Jensaarai1 I figured as much. Like I said, I did agree with your original post (30 out of 900 in any length of year would be the equivalent of 3 years to a human who lives to 90). Cheers.

  • @442hoeky lol, Christopher Lee much.

  • Remakes are cooler. Cuz they tie in the prequels with the orginals

  • Original Yoda is, and will always be, the TRUE Yoda.

  • I still hate Jar Jar !!!!!!!

  • I prefer the CGI Yoda in its entirety, but for this scene I prefer the puppet yoda.

  • Well, I miss Yoda from the old triology- there he was realy cute :D

By the way, when I was younger, this puppet Yoda scared me :D :D :D (but it still more cute then the new Yoda- only dissapointing in the "new" episode I

  • Grover?

  • I'm with the puppet :)

  • the Yoda puppet in the Old Trilogy is great, but I never liked how they did him in episode 1. this seems like a very good change.

  • talk to my ass bcse he s the only1 who gives a crap

  • this probably the only good change, since the CGI yoda has so much more emotion to his face and actions. The puppet made him look like one of those crazy senile masters, while the CGI gave an air of gentle, but stern authority.

  • as much as i liked the puppet in the original trilogy, the cgi yodaworked for the prequels because he was younger

  • cgi look beta

  • I like the puppet

  • THE ONLY GOOD CHANGE MADE TO THE MOVIE!!

  • @CommanderOtto i agree with you

  • Comment removed

  • @CommanderOtto nah old Yoda >>>>>>> new yoda

  • @CommanderOtto wtf?

  • sounds like one of those direct tv commercials

  • Ya the new one is way cooler

  • Lmao he looks so funny in episode I

  • the cgi atleast looks like the original yoda puppet the phantom menace puppet looked like shit

  • @54321nicolaskurtf Really? The Original was a Puppet? I thought it was something else like a midget or that the phantom menace budget was cut

  • The next Muppet movie should feature Yoda singing "Am I a Muppet or a Computer-Generated-Image?"

  • the new one looks awesome

  • Lucas needs to stop messing with stuff that's not broken, or redo the whole series all at once for continuity and not pretend the new shit fit in with the original.

  • "It was the first time I could get an alien to turn in a really great performance," says Lucas, (reference to jarjar).

An idiot trying to wash us over that jarjar is a great character to have in episode 1. Epic fail.

  • This totally makes up for the episode VI "nooo" - thank you, George Lucas! Finally, no more episode I puppet Yoda! :D

  • i think they made the episode 1 yoda look like shit to look younger cus he looks epic as hell in episode 3

  • The puppet one gives a much better impression of the character. A kinder character. More approachable.

  • @peope1976 What? i would run as fast as i could to get away from that creepy puppet

  • Oh My God its a talking rat... oh wait

  • Puppet looks like Jack Nicholson to me...

  • I actually like the puppet better it looks more real because its real

  • @JonAndJoshIndustries Yes...unfortunately that puppet was designed terribly...did not look anything like Yoda. Otherwise, I agree with you - it looks more lifelike because an actual person is controlling it - an excellent puppeteer. So the CGI is better simply because it looks more like Yoda consistently through all of the movies he appears in.

  • There were many changes now in this movie in 3D, The Phantom Menace.

  • You know what I love? Everyone gets mad when the original movies are changed, but they replace the TPM puppet but that's okay because it "sucked"

  • @Jvm181 Yeah exactly. I wish lucas would come out and say these prequels were all just a big joke and make the real ones. Movies that he will only bankroll and leave to actual creative, competent filmmakers to make

  • I would say puppet, since I grew up with it, but who am I kidding, the puppet always had, and always will suck

  • The ONLY thing I did't like about the prequels, was Jar-Jar Bings; George Lucas, seriously? Why would you put such a stupid character in the films trying to create some kind of humor in a pretty serious movie. Why?

  • @ferdelung Well, the whole gungan tribe is serious, thats the reason why Jar Jar binks got kicked out of otah gunga.

But, all in all I like Jar Jar, I know he isn't serious but he is a nice character that I find amusing. But I would see why people wouldnt like him, I just can't understand why people don't like the prequels, I mean episode 3 was better then some films in the orginal trilogy imo.

  • @ferdelung oh really, why the fuck does everyone complain about jar jar, but the driveling idiot Gollum never gets a bad rap, stop complaining in every movie there's always at least one character that doesn't agree with most people, i watched it when i was a youngish kid and i thought he was funny so stfu

  • @rayne7echo because jarjar was an unforgivable peice of shit. Gollum on the other hand was a tragic character. Gollum largely represented Frodo's own tragic future if he succuumed to the rings power. Jarjar is simply evidence against the existance of a loving god.

  • @anime1973 could you be any more dramatic? jar jar, was the same slap stick as wicket, it was ment for the kids! get the fuck over it. I dont hear anyone saying "wicket is the worst fucking character ever in the history of film" and as for gollum, he was seriously fucking annoying and disturbing, at least jar jar wasnt creepy as fuck

  • @rayne7echo Befoe Jar Jar came along the ewoks were the worst things in star wars

  • @nohomers100

jar jar ..... fs that thing destroyed phantom menace completely.

    lucas really lost it there.

  • @viciouswhips this movie had a lot more problems than Jar Jar. Most importantly it was a boring incoherent mess

  • @nohomers100

I wouldn't go to the effort of using capital letters for a ridiculous "character".

The film wasn't particularly incoherent, but it was boring & dull with some scenes absurdly long, too long. The pod race for example was such a time filler that I wanted that scene to end just moments after it started. Even at the cinema the film wasn't impressive or atmospheric. I could follow the plot easy enough but it was quite painful + cheesy. The script felt laggy with bad acting.

  • @viciouswhips there were a lot of things I didnt understand. Why blockade Naboo in particular? Did Palpitine want the treaty signed or no? How exactly would a treaty legitimize an invasion? Why were the Naboo supposedly dying as a result of the invasion? What was the Trade Fed getting out of this deal with Sidious? What was the bargain? Why was it so important to free anakin at that particular time? Couldnt QuiGon simply come back for him? Why did the Council change their minds about Anakin

  • @viciouswhips It really is a testiment to how bad a director Lucas is that there was bad acting in this movie.Talent wise this was the greatest ensemble of actors in Star Wars. Neeson, Jackson, Portman, Macgregor they are all great actors and Lucas couldnt get anything out of them

  • @nohomers100 why is jar jar so bad he's a kids character... deal with it

  • @rayne7echo He was annoying, pointless and unfunny. He was so obviously created to appeal to lowest common type of very young children. Did Star Wars or Empire have a character like that? Nope. Jar Jar remains symbolic of how Lucas doesnt understand his own story nor does he care. He views star wars as means to make money. That's it. So no I cant deal with it. Its an absolute slap in the face to real star wars fans. Can you deal with me not being able to deal with it

  • @nohomers100 firstly he devoted most of his life to his story, you'd want it to make some doe, secondly because he invented the saga, he can throw what ever the fuck he wants into it because its his, its like my star wars comic/novel im writing now, if somebody told me i shouldnt put a character in, thats fine, if somebody told me i cant, id tell them to go jump. personally though you can not deal with what ever you want, makes no diff to me.

  • @rayne7echo Are you sure it makes no difference to you cuz you seem to be going to great lengths trying to convince people that there is nothing wrong with JarJar and that they are wrong for even questioning crazyman George Lucas. What's your opinion of his latest attempt to shit on "his" story. His claim that Greedo was always did shoot first and it was the audiences fault for thinking that Han did. That the fans saw what they wanted. Even though HIS script says otherwise.

  • @nohomers100 because people are just bitching over nothing like star wars affects their very soul and it must be done a certain way, and ...what smuggler waits for the enemy to shoot first? this debate was one of the funniest and saddest things i ever came across. who gives a shit who shot first, and its pretty hard to fire your gun after your head burst into flames and smoke. if i was han i woulda toasted that shits head before he had a chance to shoot me.

  • @rayne7echo

star wars has affected my soul to some degree. much the same as most of the sci-fi in the 1980s. It inspired imagination and enhanced family values deep to my core. It changed some people so much that they even started Jedi religion groups. I just appreciated for what is was, pure sci-fi entertainment, with quotes and memories that I would take with me.

Episodes I & II tried to destroy my faith in Lucas as a sci-fi writer. But episode III was more entertaining and darker

  • @viciouswhips okay affecting your soul as a kid, thats fine, affecting your soul as a grown up adult is also fine... but you need to put this shit back into context, if you dont like part of the series then just watch the others... its a movie, make believe its not like fucking up somebodies life story

  • @rayne7echo Dude you are being ridiculous...yes it is a movie but it is also a cultural icon. People waited 16 years for a new star wars movie to finally see how Vader turned evil all of that..and this was the result?? It clearly shows that the "creator" doesnt care about his own creation. He views it as a means to end..to make money. And then to say that longtime fans were "overreacting" no we arent these movies are awful. Stop tryiung to defend them they are fucking terrible.

  • @rayne7echo And i dont bother with star wars anymore..I just laugh and get a kick out of truly insane fans trying to defend this garbage. Lucas wont get another dime from me. I will always enjoy the originals but a part of me will always wonder what could have been if Lucas had given a rat's ass about his own story. How truly great and eipic these prequels could have been if the mindset was to simply tell a well thought out story and not concern so much with marketing

  • @rayne7echo

I watched episode I only twice in full in 1999 and 2008 or thereabouts and deeply regretted my decisions. I tried to give it a chance but Lucas was adamant in ripping apart a great sci-fi story into a mix of cheesy childishness and bureaucratic dialogue. Was he advised to maximise the returns by his investors to cater for ALL audience ages?

  • @viciouswhips welp i was still youngish when i saw it and i thought it was cool, it was a different era back then and it felt that way, the galaxy as a whole had a unique feel to it which although i loved the civil war period it was a different side of star wars to enjoy, the technology was flushed out, the worlds were as well and to me i never watched it because i was interested in any one character, i just wanted back ground on the republic, the jedi order and how the empire rose to power.

  • @rayne7echo

Too much money and time went into graphic visuals and setups, hardly anytime went into a script which is reflected by the wooden actors. I despise when this happens, greed conquers good.

Lucas and Spielberg were my favourite directors/writers/producers. Spielberg is making the same mistakes with his Indiana Jones Crystal Skull. Poor Harrison just isn't fast enough even when he speaks. Quit while they are ahead? No, let's make more money from the cash cow movies........

  • @viciouswhips and yes its a classic mistake lucas and spiel arnt the only offenders of this, in fact its getting worse and worse these days. But Lucas actually his team pioneered alot of the technology we use for movie graphics in the modern age the same as the old star wars movies pioneered physical special effects. and kingdom of the crystal skull take it or leave it i found that movie to be pretty cool,i like the way they played out the 50's feel so thats just a subjective thing.

  • @rayne7echo it matters if the writer is saying otherwise and is now trying to rewrite history. It matters from a story prospective cuz at this point you dont know the deal with Han and it creates tension around him. You dont know if he will betray them for money. It also shows character growth as he is one way when we first meet him but by the end of the story he has changed. It shows depth of character. you claim to be a writer you should understand this.

  • @rayne7echo Also, it is one thing to say "hey I never liked how that scene went so I changed it" It is something completely different to now act like that how it originally played out never happened. Thats the ravings of a crazy person wouldnt you say?

  • @nohomers100

I don't need convincing about jarjar. Annoying from the start, unfunny and awkward to watch. Definitely introduced to baby walk the younger, new generation to Star Wars. I am certainly glad the character was dropped and didn't have a main role any more. Lucas was brilliant in the 80s with episodes IV, V, & VI. I am so damn sure that episode I would've been so differently produced if the technology was available for Lucas to play with... jarjar would never have existed.

  • @viciouswhips I hope you dont think I"m trying to defend JarJar. I'm just that even if you took JarJar out this movie would still suck

  • I like the puppet one better b/c it was originally how the idea was portrayed

  • @jolindaigneault it was supposed to be CGI all along they just couldnt do it.

  • @TyrannosaurusChexMix Unless your argument is that they had the technology to make a Jar Jar who did triple somersaults but somehow they couldn't do a CG Yoda who sat on his butt for five or six scenes, stop repeating the Lucasfilm talking points.

  • @thecolorsblend lucas said that in a video interview i watched... just repeating what i heard.

  • @TyrannosaurusChexMix I know well what he said. But I also know it makes no sense whatsoever. Jar Jar is fully animated and does a lot of (for the time) innovative and pioneering actions for a CG character.

Yoda, by contrast, sat on his butt for most of the movie. He had *ONE* walking scene in the movie and that was CG animated even back in 1999.

Lucas added a CG Yoda to the movie because he's obsessed with revisionist tinkering. Period, end of story.

  • @TyrannosaurusChexMix

no it wasnt... they even said they originally wanted to stay with a puppet yoda, the weird ass demon they pass off as yoda in episode I is their attempt to make him look younger. it got such a poor response the re-did him as a CG character.

  • @TyrannosaurusChexMix ummmm....that makes no sense. Half the characters in this movie are CGI. JarJar, Watto, Jabba, the trade fed, the battle droids

  • @rayne7echo

jarjar was a rushed, thoughtless and pointless character that was never in Lucas scripts when he created and wrote the Star Wars saga. Gollum was always in the LOTR, a most important character for the story to work. If you have ever read the book you would know why. jarjar came from nowhere except from some silly fucking writer to stop the younger generation from being bored at the long winded scenes.

  • THE PUPPET LOOKS HORRIBLE!!!

  • sweet jesus thats good

  • Pedo Yoda :B

  • The clasic puppet was the best. The should have kept it like that rather than the new puppet. After all Yoda wouldn't have aged that much. What's a 100 years for him!

  • @muppetspuppets 100 years? Where did you pull that number from? It was only 35 years.

  • Personally I think it is good they replaced the puppet yoda with a cgi one

  • Oh yeah. That puppet looks god awful.

  • The CGI yoda has more fluid movement and more realistic expressions... honestly though i don't see what the fuss is about...

  • the puppet is better

  • The Blu-ray Yoda is also used in Episode II and III without any special changes, not to mention the 3D release of Phantom Menace.

  • Both these Yoda's are CGI. The design of the CGI "old puppet yoda" from the Phantom Menace was changed in the latter prequals after fans complained that it didn't look enough like puppet from the originals. They've obviously used the redesigned version for the Blu-ray release.

  • waaa ugly puppet D:

  • I have to admit, the CGI one looks better ... but neither one's expressions seem to fit the words. They're both too calm but the voice acting sounds upbeat and urgent.

  • @Guest1001 he is an old man....

  • wait a minute... Gonzo? O.o

  • Lol! He looks like an evolved gremlin in the phantom menace XD

  • 527 people are hipsters

  • doesn't matter what he looked like; it's still stupid dialogue

  • I don't like the prequels but I have to admit the new Yoda (on the left) looks more like Yoda did in the original trilogy.

  • 527 people are purists.

  • I prefer the puppet. Better sells "crazy old elf thing which still speaks with confidence", and matches the voice better.

  • Am I the only one that likes the old one better?

  • is it just me or did the yoda puppet in the original trilogy seem much better? this one looked creepy and somehow older.

  • @MrBurgundy76 It's just you. It made sense for Yoda to be old, creepy, and senile in the original trilogy, being secluded in a part of space strong in the dark side for years but he has no reason to be in Ep 1

  • I prefer CGI. But the weird thing is: the puppet is episode 5 and 6 is really good. But the original in episode 1 was bad. Why is that? :s It is the same performer? Did they just made a horible puppet this time? xD

  • yoda in episode 5 was the best yoda ever

  • lol, the CGI looks way better, BUT the puppet Yoda in episode 5 is great too. In other words, somehow they managed to totally mess up Yoda in episode 1.

  • I never got why yoda looked so fucked up in phantom menace. I just assumed he was some sort of ham changing alien and he would like shed his old skin like a cucoon between PM and the original trilogy. but then attack of the clones came and is was like whuuut?

  • The CGI one actually looks much better, because the new puppet was shit. Original trilogy puppet is still my favorite, though.

  • @cheeserules5419 The same puppet was used in episode 1 as in the original trilogy, they just made it look younger.

  • @ladders1 Huh, I didn't know that. They sure screwed it up.

  • why would star wars fans want a cgi character with near limitless facial expression and emotional response over a muppet with a hand up his ass...watch out george..i'm sure someone, somewhere is pissed

  • the old yoda looks retarded!!!

  • How the hell did they do that?

  • george lucas is a nonce

  • still a fan of the puppet

  • Lucas should have never cast Larry King as yoda in the original TPM release.

  • The puppet Yoda is way better!

  • I'll see the original trilogy in theaters. Without the 3D thank you.

  • Now with less facial expressions!

  • I suggest George Lucas another change to The Phantom Menace: The whole fucking movie.

  • next will be indiana jones 3d

  • I just saw the 3D yesterday and I must say that the new Yoda makes The Phantom Menace now watchable. CGI Yoda has facial expressions and I like at the end when the Gungans and Naboo are celebrating how they made Yoda look pissed off like he feels something isn't right and this is just the beginning. Instead of the smile the puppet did. Them doing that change did a good job setting up for the next films.

  • This is probably the ONE change in Star Wars that nobody minded.

  • YODA WINS!!!

  • go cross eyed for 3d win!

  • is it me or dose episode three yoda look younger
