I dont think so. I think people would be idiots if it was that simple. The term "smart" is defined by the society. These days, people aren't taught too much anymore - people simply don't want to learn. They're easily distracted by television and shit.. You could have another system. One that still looks over the leader's actions... but then again, human greed always prevails, so there really is no answer. If there is, I do not have it.

From what I've read alot of dictatorships are motivated more by real-politik and brutal power games than anything else. It's more likely that the few who have a say, just might be the most brutal and power-hungry of individuals...

Well you can argue that if morality is indeed an absolute expression. But I think that morality cannot be quanitified as you would a simple arithmetic problem. Various nations have different ideas on what constitutes moral behavior and different perspectives on who were heroes and who were villains in their history. So again I ask, define what makes moral behavior....

Well..I was always under the impression that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely, to quote the old adage. Hence Democracies with its elections is less likely to have a corrupt dictator in power. So once again tell me about this Torrijos?? What made him moral?? And what's the benchmark of morality that you look for??

He was moral because he said no to money and agreed to help his people. The way of life in Panama improved exponentially during his run, and, of course, became even worse after.
Look him up if you wish. He was loved by all Panamanians. Better yet, read up on him in this book: "The confessions of an economic hitman" by John Perkins.

I'm not all that sure anymore (it is late at night and I haven't slept in a while).
The fact of the matter is that he was a prime example, among others, who was a dictator who improved the quality of life of his country. There was one more in Peru, Colombia, Indonesia. Not many, true, but there were some. + The way the "free" US is at the moment, with it's righteous elected leader, I'd rather take my chances with a dictator.

I'd rather chose a dictator because I know I'm being fucked either way. Today's voting system is really ruled by the corporations that fund it, and big corporations don't care about my (or yours) standards of living - they just want bills passed that will benefit them more.

In my opinion, both communistic and democratic rules are equally evil. Comm: You know who your paying. Demm: You're paying but you don't know whose in charge (as I explained the electing process - the corporations are the ones in charge). Left, right, doesn't matter - people have a flaw of greed and no matter which side you're on, that flaw is still a part of you. Solution: If you can vote, vote for someone who is not funded by the corp. Ex. Ron Paul - the man who could have saved america.

And I agree with that quote, I knew it for quite some time and absolutely agree with it. What makes you think that a democratic gov cannot be corrupt? Take a look at Bush, or the recent gov. or Illinois.. they are both corrupt! Beyond belief!

I'm not arguing that a democratic system cannot be corrupted. I think corruption is bound to occur in all political systems. But in a democratic system there is always an angry voting electorate to worry about if corruption becomes unbearable. In a dictatorship however, there this mechanism is lacking. Hence corruption can fester in authoritarian regimes and cripple them over the long run.

Yes, unless the populous is taught poorly and cannot think critically enough to distinguish a good gov from a bad one OR if both candidates are have the same morals. In the current case: Obama and McCain are actually very similar. They are both for bailouts, federal reserve, the iraq war. Ron Paul, however, is very much different, but you will not hear about him, right? Because he doesn't get sponsored by large corporations like obama and mccain. Unfortunately, both these cases shape the US.

Well the fact is, that morality and even civics are not being taught in our schools. So instead of having a national culture that allows all citizens to use the same benchmarks, we are taught instead that morals are relative. Atleast that is what I'm observing. There are many people who would take exception to your statement and say that there's a great deal of daylight between Obama and McCain.

The Third World is overpopulated - and the West keeps them alive by artificially sustaining their population growth. Nature must run its course, and the population of the Third World must be greatly reduced.
As for these pirates, if a nation can't protect its wares, then bravo pirates. Just because it's 2008 doesn't mean weakness is tolerated.

During the investigation, coincidentally enough, the evidence was confiscated by the Feds (he died in a plane crash) after the authorities discovered a bomb was hidden in a voice recorder. Panama, at the time, was causing major conflict for the US because they had an upper hand because of their prosperous Canal.
