no, man on the side was not the first song he ever wrote. On the AGT commentary, he said it was like the 3rd song he wrote at berklee, so yeah this probably was the first song ever written by him.
I can't beleive he hasn't given lifelines the kind of playtime it deserves; it is one of the best songs I've ever heard. I would give anything if he would record this in the studios. I've been looking for another recording, other than the live one, for years. If you read this John, please at least put it on your next live CD!!!!
not only is it one of the best songs that he has every written but its also one of the most complex to play because if you dont have huge hands like he does then its very difficult to play the chords...thats why there is only one other video on here...and even that dude fudges the chords and doesnt play them entirely correctly
hearing lifelines was just...wow...I havnt heard him play it in a long time and just brought me back to his atlanta days. that song just got lost in all those old live acoustic recordings. kinda makes me wish i was at berklee years ago to hear him play it in the dorms. I'm still not sure in which room in my building he was. I hear rumors but anyone here go to berklee then and know?
well, more people would have known "man on the side" because it was on AGT, but "lifelines" is pretty obscure at this point...i really wish i could have been there.
Yeah, he did say that. I had actually never heard it til this show. Definitely a new favorite.
After MOTS he also said he often walked down Newbury St to think while at Berklee.. and he wondered if the TGI Friday's was still there cause he could go for some potato skins, lol. Love him.

He's always said Man on the Side was the first song he ever wrote. He mentioned in the AGT commentary, too.
