I think it's possible to compare bands in a analytical aspect. Telling the differences but NOT saying this is BETTER. Everybody says their favorite band is the best in the universe. This is obviously fucking retarded.
I have no problem with people comparing them to Dream Theater... DT are the gods of prog metal, so comparison should be taken as a compliment lol. It's kind of like how everyone compares all thrash metal bands with Metallica - you should be proud to be compared with a band at the top of your genre :)
My opinion on DT and SX : Dream theater really good when it comes to the technicality of their music while Syphony X has a more epic-like feel (which I prefer) and is more metal compared to Dream Theater. Both bands are amazing though :)
SX, from what I've heard, sounds more like a mix of DT's progressiveness and some song structure styles, while also like Dimmu Borgir's melodic harmony with everything heavy in metal. Just my opinion though, so nobody flame me.
The one thing about Symphony X is that at times, they are a bit too Power Metal for my taste. I'm nost saying they're terrible or that they suck, I actually own a few of their albums.
This band reminds me a lot of Yngwie Malmsteen but far better. Don't get me wrong, i love the old Malmsteen albums but what makes SX better is that they're a tight band and they work together while the Yngwie Malmsteen band is pretty much a one man show
What a perfect song, great music and atmosphere. Everything fits so well and in good taste, not one exaggeration in any of its elements, like happens so many times to progressive bands.
In fact, I think that this is the strongest virtue of Symphony X and what makes this band so good and elegant.

symphony x are orders of magnitude better than dt simply because they don't just play technically and fast. they add a great amount of emotion into the equation which makes the difference

I like music that drives strong emotions in me i.e. Symphony X, Watchtower, Sentenced, Paradise Lost, Death and so on. Playing scales at maximum speed up and down the fretboard is plainly boring. I gave many chances to DT especially. Since they managed to be boring even live there's no reason to bother any longer.
@elisseos21 Petrucci doesn't just play fast scales. You either haven't listened to them much or you've only restricted yourself to a single few albums, since their style changes alot every album. Plus, I mentioned one songs as an example. They have a shitload of emotional songs, all of which are awesome.

And Dream Theater I'd be more inclined to compare with Fates Warning, Age of Nemisis, or some Jazz fusion players... but really, why do people have to compare? Maybe it's because many people are so uneducated in the genre that they think SX and DT are the only prog metal bands out there.
This band is just amazing. The diversity of Allen's vocals throughout their songs (or within the same song, if you will) and the magnificent skill of every musician in the band....
"Power Progressive neoclassical symphonic metal" with some thrashing riffs here and there and the occasional gothic atmosphere..... 'nough said.
If you guys like this stuff..Check out Dead Air Radio from Nashville...They are on Myspace and you can hear their stuff..I think there is only three members. The guitar players are awesome.
I agree that Symphony X is great. Their approach to rock music and their use of the rock band as a musical ensemble is truly unmatched. The harmonies on this song sound like early Styx. Listen to The Serpent Is Rising and you see.

This is simply my favorite Symphony X song and in my opinion sounds way ahead of it's time from 1:46 to 2:28. if people but more fire into this type of creativity, who knows where music would be today. Flawless.

I agree that Symphony X is great. Their approach to rock music and their use of the rock band as a musical ensemble is truly unmatched. The harmonies on this song sound like early Styx. Listen to The Serpent Is Rising and you see.

So much influence in this song. Everything from JS Bach to Dream Theater to Yngwie to Mike Oldfield.

Maybe... but yo'ure listenig just to "that can be similar", you're not listenig to the song herself, there's some inluenzation, yes, but they're put all this influences in a song that is original cause of all the effect they've fused in. I apology for my english, i'm Italian :P

This is simply my favorite Symphony X song and in my opinion sounds way ahead of it's time from 1:46 to 2:28. if people but more fire into this type of creativity, who knows where music would be today. Flawless.

One of the best songs to ever listen to if you are in the right mood and enviroment :D, same goes for Through The Looking Glass :D, Symphony X don't make songs, they make MASTERPIECES! Also the more lengthy songs are more like stories, The Odyssey is GOD!!!
