That Roky Erickson dude wasn't anything but badass. Please don't confuse him with mental illness ever. That shit doesn't even exist. I have met him in person and to be quite honest, I think it is what he's been through that sets him apart from the relastivity of the common whole. He has been so fucking mistreated. I hate that shit. Mentally fit people for all practicle purposes suck. Anyone who rocks out knows what I'm talking about. End of story.
to be sent to the nuthouse for a joint is so stupid, the sad thing is that the us gov. keeps working that way and keeps sending people to jail and places like Guantanamo and Diego Garcia island based on supositions.
At the end what? not even "we´re sorry to kidnap you for X years you´re not guilty"
After all that's what got him sent to the nut-house in the first place. Oh and what you said about the back royalties that Roky and his fellow bandmates are owed for this popular old dittie alone, yeah, I do agree that's even sadder yet! I have read that thanks to Roky's youngest brother Sumner's hard work and legal-wrangling on Roky's behalf he has in the past three years or so finally received some money for this song and his solo work making him financially secure after all these years : )
Though I do agree here that the path Roky's life went down after his '69 arrest was a pretty sad and tragic one quite frankly. Now I'm no advocate for pot, acid or any of that other drug crap here mind you, however, to be busted and sent to a mental institution of all places just for one single effing joint is absolutely ridiculous if you ask me, and the guy so did not deserve that kind of punishment for it! Who knew taking the advice of one's lawyer could be the worst decision you could make.
Um, I wouldn't go so far as to say that Roky was the best thing to come out of Texas musically as there are plenty of other great and highly influential bands/musicians from all different genres who also hail from Texas! I suppose it's just all boils down to a matter of opinion I guess.
I wonder how much Roky Erickson got in royalties for everytime this ad aired. My gues is nothing. Best thing to come out of Texas and the poor bastard got locked up for posession of one joint and was forced to have ECT shock "therapy" :( Also Janis Joplin was close to being their lead singer at one point.
I never realized...that rocky played guitar. There's such a tiny amount of 13th floor footage, this is really appreciated. I think Rocky was one of the most original voices in the whole 60's garage punk scene. I agree..his music should be evreywhere. roll on Rocky
That's bullshit. Roky's music should be everywhere. Roky and anybody who is still alive who made this music deserves to finally get paid. Here's hoping they use Two-Headed Dog to sell baby wipes or that Roky gets his own Ben & Jerry's flavor!!!!

When I first saw the Dell ad on tv I freaked out and started yelling "omg it's 13 Floor Elevators!" I almost gave my husband a heart attack!

i didn't know who it was until i asked a friend who also loves garage music...i can't believe i'd never heard their music! love the harmonica...

Both The 13th floor elevators, and Dell computers hail from Austin, TX. Rocky was comitted to a mental hospital where I worked for a short time.

Agreed 100%. Let bands I enjoy make money for a change (here's hoping one of the Elevators had sense to hold onto to the usage rights).
