I once made something somewaht similar out of KNEX - it operated more like a music box though- the pegs on the drum hit the keys of my keyboard... some time I will recreate it and video it in action.... ( I did once have it in a small rube goldberg machine I built)
Although it sucks that youtube has made the audio mono and worse, gotten the audio out of sync, it is still possible to observe the performance and transcribe the notes, if you're familiar with the keyboard layout.
I composed it on a guitar tuned to the Fripp intervals which, as rufinous kindly corrected me below, are based on fifths.
This mechanical performance, like all of Toying With Mortalitys work is accurate and was, in fact, devised as a teaching tool for humans. Monkey see monkey do.
Robert Fripp devised a guitar tuning scheme based on intervals of a 4th. Strumming it reminded me of some of the music in the original Outer Limits TV series which borrowed heavily from 20th century classical music. I wrote a short theme, transcribed it in MIDI and animated this performance of it.
nope standard tuning is straight 4ths, with a major third between the G and B strings, robert fripp's tuning is straight fifths, starting on a C. it's C,G,D,A,E, and the last is a minor third interval, G

They are basically straight 5ths in a row. Just moving up and down. i recognize this alot from tuning my violin!
