Geeze, everyone needs to just calm down.. Roller and figure skating are both beautiful sports that take tons of hard work and commitment. Both are fantastic and both are valid. There is a place for everyone and to each his own. Why are we so insecure that we can't just be happy for each other and encourage each other. Women need to support each other!! I commend anyone who has the talent to do either of these beautiful and difficult sports.

I would love to learn how to ice skate, but because of my location and the ladk of ice rinks..I learned to roller skate. For some reason..only certain places will do ice rinks...

Roller skating isn't an Olympic sport because it doesn't have a big enough following. It's a beautiful sport but it is extremely similar to ice figure skating, and ice skating (though interest in many countries is down dramatically) has more of a following. I love both and have competed in both and my loyalty falls to roller skating, and I would love to see it at the Olympics.

Back on the day (and currently), ice skaters used roller skates to train in the off season when they didn't have ice. Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski both started on roller skates.

For those who wanted to know why artistic roller skating isn't in the Olympics (it would be the perfect summer games equivalent of ice skating, IMHO), it's because of the judging. The IOC will not admit any more sports to the Olympics that require subjective judging by a panel of judges. Any sports added to the Olympics basically have to have a performance that can be timed, measured, or scored (making a goal, for example.) There's a World competition, but that's as far as it will likely go.

she's reallly good =) i've only been skating 5 monthes but i hav a cheated double salchow and other cheated doubles. i think roller skating shood be recognized. its amazing how people do triple and especially how good their doubles are.

yes. mostly seen in mens competition because of how hard it is on the body to try for three rotations with five pounds on each ankle. It can really rip the knees apart especially in pairs which is why pairs mostly focuses on the lifts unlike with ice skating.

@markoperzona All I did was tell the truth. Copy. copy. copy. All of it is COPIED. I have absolutely no respect for a sport or for a skater who completely stole my sport, and then demanded to be in the Olympics. Spins, jumps, footwork, and flexibility components were all copied. Dresses, style, and OTB tights were copied from us. They even copied figures from us, even though figures are no longer required in figure skating.

@rollerbabe97 You're just in denial that you didn't copy us. Roller took all of figure skating's spins, jumps and spirals and copied them on roller skates. Did roller skating *invent* all of those jumps and spins? NOPE. They saw ice skaters doing them and decided to make a sport exactly like it on roller. That's called COPYING and there's no way around it.

@pintohorseowner hi,i'm italian and i don't speak very well english, but i write my opinion.i'm the italian champion of italy of artistic roller skating.i can say that it isn't all copy,a lot of spin aren't copy from ice skating,in the couple we have a lot of "lifting" that you haven't in the ice,wehave the show team.the show team are fantastic and you haven't them.and if the artistic roller skating go to the olimpics games, it's only for the show teams.artistic roller skating is more dificult.

Wow. Just stunning. And roller is harder than ice. It is harder to get deeper edges, and the wheels are so much heavier than the blade. Not to mention how much harder spins are on wheels! This would be good on ice, let alone wheels, which is why I am not at all suprised that she's the world champion!

each year the word sports are voted to be on the olympics by an olympic organization represented by every country. the ones that don't get enough votes don't get onto the olympics. i don't think its less common, i just don't think it gets as much coverage as ice skating or roller hockey.

I use to artistic roller skate....i have heard (so don't hold me to it) that roller skating is actually harder than ice skating..I have a cousin who has done both and he swears roller skating is much more difficult.

There's less friction in ice skating, so moving across the surface is easier all around. Not to mention the skates weigh a lot less than roller skates. The first time I went I skating, I learned how to do it backwards within an hour. Backwards roller skating is harder.

In my time I was very good. Triples were done but not like they are today. I never won any big national titles. However, friends of mine did. I skated in Ohio and Michigan. My friends name were Kim Drew, Amy Fosgate, Janet Kerner, Sharon Ingles, Shari was my partner for a short time. What I would be interested to know is if any of you know of or heard anything about Amy, Janet, Shari or Kim? I am doubtful that any of you have ever heard of them however there is a chance.

Minda, I quit skating in 1974. I guess that was a few years before you. I wonder thought if you may have known people that I skated with. Is there a chance you knew Kim or Heather Drew? Kim was my pairs partner for a year. I also, skated in Michigan with the Ingles in Hillsdale Michigan. I did not know of then a rink in Ann Arbor but I did also skate in Adrian Michigan.

That must be Heather. I have never seen her skate. I skated pairs with her sister Kim for about a year. That was in 1973 and Heather was a baby. I remember getting in big trouble while Kim and I were baby sitting and I poked her in the eye. Do you remember the Dorso's. I skated fours with Mike Dorso. They owned I think it was the Colorain Skateland in Cincinnati Ohio. Wow, do you have any pictures of Heather. I mostly skated for John Harris but Phyllis Romick also, taught me.

i am a figure skater, and i can rollar blade very well, but i think as to if rollar skating or figure is harder, i think it depends on which your used to, and which you feel more comfortable with, if you dont love it and dont put forth all your passion anything will seem more difficult.

jbirdxo, your axel on ice is cheated. It's not hard to land cheated jumps on roller skates, but it's *considerably* harder to land them clean. Get your axel clean on ice and try again on rollers, you'll see what I mean.

Which is easier depends alot on the person.  On ice you have picks to land on ( on rollers it's incorrect to land on the toe stop ), ice skates are lighter so jumping is easier, spins just go around without trying. Even so, roller skating is easier *to me*, and personally I think it's more interesting to watch with things like jump combinations with 7+ jumps, broken ankle spins, heel camels, sit spins with their butts below their knee, etc...

I wear white skates and use boot covers on them to protect them from dust. I have black covers, along with red, pink, blue, green, etc. You slip them on your ankles first, then put the skates on, lace them up, then pull the protective covers down over the boot. :) Oh, I'm 52 and have been skating since 4th grade.

I think black boot covers went with her costume. I think since she had nothing white on her costume, white skates would have stood out. The black with silver lining just looked better. It was for artistic reasons not boy/girl boot reasons.

Ok I started out roller skating and I felt restricted with it and switched over to figure skating... though I still enjoy roller skating. I skate everyday for 3 hours a day. And because of it I'm CA state champ. So don't be going around commenting on here like Ice Skating easy. Their both difficult sports.
