This was a project done by 10th graders and we did not have the resources or talent to make a high quality production. I hope if J.D. Salinger saw this he would have appreciated the fact that the book still connects to readers of a newer generation. We worked hard on this assignment and got our well deserved A.
Albeit you did not have the resources or acting ability to do this book justice, you made yourselves look like complete fools even giving you the benefit of the doubt.
I appreciate your comment. This was a class project done by my classmates and I when we were high school sophomores. We did our best and tried to get a good grade on the project despite our limited resources. We ended up getting a perfect grade on the assignment.
That being said, I also questioned the soundtrack (though I find the Beck song beautiful and don't dislike any of the bands). I understand you have limitations, but did I question whether it even needed as much music as it did.
I always envisioned it with a jazz soundtrack, probably because of both the time period and the references to jazz involved.
Hopefully these comments are well-received; I don't mean to insult the production and I think it reflects talent from all involved.
hey thanks for the comment, the music was a concern when we were making it. I believed we were making the best decisions with our resources however i still question the use of that American Hi-Fi song since it might be a bit of a music overkill and didnt fit the music used in the other scenes in the novel.
Yeah, I think eliminating that selection would have strengthened the project overall. When I was film major they used to talk about how easy it is to just throw music over something and a certain part and create something like a music video instead of a working film. Then again, one of my favorite films is the Graduate, so I was never in complete agreement with them about music.
On second viewing, I think the Beck song works very well, especially if the scene were to continue. And the Five for Fighting song does not work poorly, though does seem a bit at odds with the Beck song. Anyway, done rambling, and I'm happy to see someone actually taking an adaptation of anything from the novel seriously (unlike other you tube scenes from it), even if it is only for a low/no budget high school project. Peace.
I actually think this is the best you tube adaptation of anything from the book I've seen as of yet. There were some problems with the editing and shots and such, but, I mean, for the production value of it, it wasn't too bad. I think the cast did great, even though the pimp was obviously too young, ha (the other too, in addition to performing well, seemed appropriate for the parts in terms of age and appearance.) Good job for the limitations!
Well done! The guy playing Holden did a really good job, and I liked the music/camera effect. Only one bit of constructive criticism: You should have kept the narration. Its such an integral part of the book, and of the character that it just seems pointless without it. Otherwise though, great job!
Again this was a high school production. You may dislike the music and the effect we chose for the short. However what I believe is the most important thing is the story. Which can be easily followed. If you can't figure anything out because of the effect. I might recommend seeing an eye doctor.
You really captured the overall rock music essence and sexual thematic elements of Catcher in the Rye. I mean, really, great job. You completely match every description in the book, especially the girl, she was definitely not an old bag, and I can tell you are actually in New York, and good job making the Elevator man black too, you got it all right.
Hey thanks for the comment just to let you know: We are High School Students and couldnt really shoot at night without the proper equipment. Also true the acting was subpar but im working with volunteer actors.
Lemme tell ya.
If ol' Salinger saw this, he'd wish he never wrote the goddam book.

Hey..where was the green dress? You need more of the dialogue. Good music but you strayed too much from the text....

One of the requirements of the assignment was to create a script based on one of the chapters of the book. Thank you for the constructive criticism.

It was supposed to give the film a abstract sorta storybook look. It looks good on the dvd however on youtube the quality has gone down.

This sucks. You're playing pop-punk and have some stupid effect going on the whole time it looks like. You can't figure anything out.

Well we all know that but getting punched in the face is more cinematic so we decided to do that instead.
