  • at 2:38 the string snap and cut me

  • Comment removed

  • Could this be done properly on any bass sir?

  • do u not hv a harmonic when u thumb the E string while muting with your thumb? hoe do u get rid of that?

  • How can I practice building up the speed of my thumb slapping?? I just can't seem to get the solo up to the right speed...

  • That is is a pretty damn amazing explanation

  • dude how get go high on the e string on that bass

  • What a beautiful bass. You make quite a product.

  • merci pour cette video

  • how do you left hand slap with out muting the whole fretboard?

  • This is sick!

    Do you still make basses?

  • Thyank yer!

  • wow, the sound of the bass is just like on the album, amazing

  • Well here's one who got routine!

    GREAT video lesson :-)

  • You've got one of the meanest sounding basses, if not the single meanest sounding bass, I've ever heard on youtube. If you could PM me saying everything you used in this vid, where I can get one of these basses, the settings you used on your equipment, what strings you used etc (assuming you can recall such details), any of it would be ridiculously appreciated.

  • By far the best help ever for any song if you can post more primus that would be awesome. But god damn I need a new 4 string bass mine ain't working out to well

  • How do you get that tone?

  • Man, you've got sick feel!

  • nice bass

  • It is ridiculous how good your tone is.

  • Good stuff, awesome tone btw.

  • Your bass has great tone :D

  • hey when i play it it has the beat to the song but like it isnt giving the sound that your getting any suggestions?

  • your pretty good at playing bass considering your head has been cut clean off

  • Thanks dude you've been a great help :)

  • so THAT'S what he does after the first chorus! Those damn ghosted hammers. thank you so much

  • his bass looks as though its made almost completely out of mahogany which is a very dense wood, fretboard looks like its made of ebony which the densest wood on the planet, that with the large area of the body extending halfway up the next on the top part, very good active pickups, very good action and a nice bass amp would be the reason why he has such a nice sound. I can almost gaurentee that bass was hand-made by someone with their own woodshop willing to put time and love into it

  • Mark Eshenbaugh (the guy in the vid) is a great luthier. He studied under Carl Thompson. Hopefully I'll be able to have Mark make me one some day soon :)

  • hey man, good video. what type of bass do you have?

  • can someone tell me how i could obtain the same bright sound when i tap?

  • use your bridge pickup, and on your amp, set the "bass" and the "mid" to about half way up, and the "treble" to about 3/4 of the way up.

  • your excused

  • i cant get my bass to make such a loud tapping sound, so i can play it but doesnt sound just right, ill try some new strings and lower action, but great vid, got me on the right track : )

  • possibly try some compression? it reduces the dynamic range and I know billy sheehan uses it for that purpose help helps

  • ya that helps, all i have is my heads built in comp though, so its pretty basic, but thanks for the help!

  • how to do make the tapping sound so loud?

  • @abhay108 Yeah it just doesn't work like that on my bass. It's the quality of the pick ups.

  • You play this exactly how Les plays it. Good teaching.

  • do u know shake hands with beef

  • hey im a drummer tht might learn how to play bass any tips?

  • I have struggled with this song since I started playing bass a few years ago... Basically, I gave up on it a long time ago. I had my bass in my hand when I watched this video and first time round I was playing something that half resembled Lacquer Head. Thanks for breaking it down. It's actually quite easy!

  • What bass is that?

  • yea dude when i wanted to learn this song i went to this vid ... but i do the solo my own way... its basicly the same but the timing is slightly different

  • "excuse me I missed a Part"

    Fuck - talk about humble

Although Im not sure which string to pop - the 1st one?

  • the g string

  • ;) thought so - best to check. You make this look too easy, I picked up my bass & tried that thing with the run of eights up the neck, It sounded rubbish - I suck!

  • HAHA, this is great! Subscribed.

  • Im def glad someone could break down that little solo in between, the shuffle as you referred to it. I was listening to it on the song like...shit that sounds hards, but you broke it down well man. Thanks!!

  • awesome!

  • brain fuck gotta learn slow ahhhhh

  • I hold the bass too high to play poorly. BTW, Les holds it even higher than I do.

  • hi my name is ric and i'm really thankful for this 3 lessons i love this song, i like a lot primus. the only way i could play this song was this way ..! and i'm really glad that someone could do this, i hope this is not the last song you came up..!

    yyz-rush its cool too..!

    well done man..! thank u

  • que sonido tiene ese bajo! muy bien explicado, pero todavia no puedo tocarlo, no llego! gracias por explicar esta cancion, es mi favorita!

  • Awesome man, but you can't do it that way with a six string. You can sort of get the same effect by muting with right palm, but its not as funky sweet.

  • les plays a 4 string on the whole antipop album as far as i know

  • Simple!!! Very nice by the way.

  • Dude you a a maniac on that thing. Such great syncopation between left and right hands. I'm going into my 6th month playing bass and this is one of the songs I'm just working constantly. I probably won't get your kind of syncopation for a long while yet, though. AMAZING!

  • dont want to be a supermaster after 6 months, ive been playin a few years and I have to try several times

  • this is hard, i can play so much other stuff but i just cant get this, that left hand thing is making me mad, i can do the whole expcept this part

  • beautiful sounding bass

  • Did somebody laughed at 1:17? Btw great lesson. \m/

  • I mean laugh. :)

  • Very Good Mermão

  • VERY HELPFUL!!! THANKS MAN

  • Jesus this songs been fucking me off for too long

Thanks for the help man, keep at the bass ^^

  • would turning the gain way up help get that sound with the left hand slap?

  • What make of bass is that?

  • Eshenbaugh

  • i cant get any sound when i slap the strings with my left hand....

  • How much would it cost for you to make me one of those basses in the video.

  • Awesome tutorial, helped me very much!

I just have two things to add:

    1. You can also mute the strings with the palm of your right hand, you just need to turn you wrist instead of going up and down. Maybe you could mention that.

    2. It seems like he actually doesn't mute the pop fully, he pushes it down -exactly- between the 2nd and the 3rd fret. It sounds half-muted.

Again, your rythmic analyzation was very very helpful, thanks a lot!

  • awsome lesson plz do more (Y)

  • jesus h. christ

what's the string spacing on that bass?

  • Thanks my man,you help me alot!!!!

  • damn

i in the process of making one of my own myself

  • is that a carl thompson?

  • nope, Its an Eshenbaugh. I make them.

  • @makibajo2

how much would you except if i were to ask you to make me one.

  • @makibajo2 you make basses??? i would love to make one! but i have no money or tools to make one. plus im 15 >.<

  • @makibajo2 Do you sell them and how much do you sell them for generally?

  • how long have you been playing bass?.. cuz i want to be as good as you

  • I started playing bass in high school, like 18 years ago or so.

  • how you make this soynd on bass u use some kind of pedal?

  • You're the fucking man!!!

  • thanks dude

  • do you think you can show me how to do is it luck? i love the rift to that but it's so fast that i just don't know how to play it

  • "Is it luck" is one of those enigmatic ones. I read somewhere that Les holds the whammy bar halfway down while he slaps on it, abd the bar just kinda jumps up and down with the slapping, which makes it impossible to replicate closely on a non-trem bass. I would like to try, though...

  • what's the tuning for this song and for much of the rest of Primus songs?

  • standard. from lowest to highest its e-a-d-g

  • 2 things.

    1. why cant i get that smacking/ tapping sound. when i do it, it either makes no noise or it makes the sound of the fret its hitting. it might be because my hands are too small. i cant mute the all the strings and tap hard enough to make noise or it wont mute and ill get an F# and an A.

    2. how the hell do you get that kick ass tone?

    i really like it

  • hw u gt that sound?

  • good vid

    awsome tone ;)!

  • Thanks so much for the tutorial, man! Helped me learn this crazy song.

  • Anyone know what type of Bass he has?

  • it's an eshenbaugh, he makes them himself

  • keep on sniffen paint!

  • son of a #@*%+!

  • sweet

  • you do this really good. can you figure out how to play of whales and woe by claypool?

  • excellent. you know your shit!

  • I love the tone on this bass, just the right amount of overdrive

  • do you mute it at the harmonic??

  • Nope. It's strummed and then you slap the E string from 12th, and slide down, then get back into it

  • no, i mean the main riff. he muted the second frets, and my harmonic is at the beggining of the first fret. i tried it and i think the harmonic sounds right, but i was just making sure.

  • OH, ok, sorry dude.

    Yeah that's about right.

  • THANKS!

  • Excellent lesson, and amazing bass my friend, that headstock is fantastic.

  • I did this song on five string.

At the end of the solo how what notes did he slide on is it just open G to a slide on the D? or Something else

  • open g, then slide down the whole e string.

  • thanks

  • nice lesson mate. what kinda bass is it?

  • What are you playing through?

  • to quote an earlier comment of mine: "I have just a little distortion on the bass, via a tubescreamer model on my line 6 podxt live." I also put a little treb and bass from the onboard 3-band on it, not much though, maybe 2 or 2 1/2 notches.

  • thanks for dumbing that down a few notches i would have never gotten that myself that stuff is hard mad crazy . great instructions.

    claypool sucks hahahahahahaha.

  • good work man, but simplified it ! thats not lacquer head indeed

  • Groovy!

Congratulations buddy! It's very hard to find people in YouTube playing songs the right way.

    Keep slapping that bitch!

  • nice bass

  • Damn. I got a 5-string. Is it harder with one or do I just need practice?

  • practice :D i do it on a five string

  • you have to do more instructional videos like this. this is a PERFECT instructional video. you go slow at the different parts and explain really well. i hope to play this song real soon cause of you. :] thanks!

  • give me your bass xD i fucking loved it

  • Shit, that bass sounds amazing

  • Your bass is awesome

  • what pickups and strings do you use they sound incredible

  • Dude...you say you made that bass eh? It sounds incedible, seriously nice job man! So beefy! Mmm beef.

  • Been tryin' to figure out that slap solo for the longest time.

    Thanks for the tip.

  • that sound gives me orgasm lol so nice

freaking deep and freaking snappy at the same time. whats the eq on lol?. cant understand how you can get that much power on the tap

    good job

  • thanks for the video i never did figure out that solo part so this is a lot of help

  • thanks for the video

  • man. watching this makes me feel like i just started playing bass again. i've got a long way to go.... great tutorial. keep them up please!

  • Great playing. Great teaching too. thanks for the posting.

  • wow man awesome!! Best explanation and tutorial i ever seen

But do you have any preference on where to put your fingers when muting the E and G strings?

  • thanks man, i'll strat practising NOW

  • Not bad. I play it a bit differently, using my right hand to play the eighth notes and using my left hand to fill in in between.

As for the solo spot i actually play straight sixteenth triplets alternating my hands. When I get the chance I'll post a video response and trade some techniques with you. It's always great to learn from other fellow bassists!

  • PS. PODXT-Live rules! Greatest investment ever, haha!

  • Very very great video! Ive checked some tabs and soem guitar pro stuff but ive never got the "tap" part so i had kinda been slapping my thumb off!

Very many thanks for that, made it so much easier!

And buy the way, where did you get a hold of that bass? Looks mighty fine!

Peace out and hope you make more Les/Primus instruction videos! Cheers

  • He makes them.

  • ya i havent seen a single correct tab for this so i figured it out from watching the video but i didnt know the solo part so thanks to this guy i think im gonna figure it out

  • wow

  • dude is that a carl thompson???

  • Mark Eshenbaugh.

  • How is it your left hand slaps sound out so well? Is it because of the gain you've got going on in your rig? Or do you just have some super human fingers? lol

  • just wondering the same.. must be 'cause of the gain..

ANOTHER reason for me to buy a gallien krueger^^

    excellent!

  • The low action helps. Last time i went to the doctor, my fingers did bleed when he pricked them, so as far as i know, they are normal sausage-like human fingers.

  • LOL. Thanks a lot for the reply. It sounds like you've got some sort of gain going, though, for sure. Do you use a Sans Amp or anything like that to shape your tone?

  • to quote an earlier comment of mine: "I have just a little distortion on the bass, via a tubescreamer model on my line 6 podxt live." I also put a little treb and bass from the onboard 3-band on it, not much though, maybe 2 or 2 1/2 notches.

  • i think he may be refering to your action

  • Wow, that tone is delicious...

  • what effex do u use for this song i mean pedals and strings

  • from what I can see on this video your bass is very very soft. is it tru? because I play on a fender PJ and when I play this song it dosn't sound so as in you video.

  • I guess I don't know what you mean by 'soft' do you mean the volume?

  • All these basses are mine, the one that looks like a CT is a CT tribute bass, in homage to the man and his mission. That particular bass is also not for sale.

  • wow i see you are a luthier. Are any of the basses in your videos carl thompson basses? If those are of your own creation, you should be proud. Thanks for the helpful lesson.

  • nice bass and lesson

  • wow dude. you're a really good instructor, i did this song in 10 minutes of practice thanks to you. very thorough, thanks a lot.

  • how do u have such loud taps?

  • High Gain

  • God that bass sounds so good... what kind of bass is that? and are these special strings?

  • The strings are DR High Beams, 40,60,80,100. High Beams are stainless steel over round core.

  • i see what your doing, i just cant do it. i can do the slap/ pop thing with my right hand, but the smacking thing with my left hand doesnt work. do i need like some sick expensive bass for that, cuz that would explain it. i have like a $89 rogue and so i would need a new one, huh. please write back to explain my delema.

  • I find low to medium low action helps a great deal. it would be difficult to prescribe a specific remedy for your basses, but my necks are almost flat, and my G strings measure between .095 and .105 high at the 22nd fret.

  • Let me add that though I make and sell high-end basses, I do not believe that an extremely expensive bass is neccesary to acheive this type of playability.

  • It all depends on the action. I've got a cheap-ass Barrucada bass (basically a fender P-bass ripoff) and I learned to do that fine.

  • cool dude it sounds really bad on my bass cause its like a 150$ ariana jazz bass, does anyone know if the tappng (my main problem) will sound like this guys on a ibanez bass?

  • Sounds decent on mine. :)

  • thank you for being born!!! you broke this song down perfectly, i was able to play the entire song in about 30 mins of practice. thank you again. your the man, man!!!

  • i assume this isnt going to play as well on a rubbish low costing ashton like my bass?

  • would it work on a epiphone embassy?

  • da hora!!!!!!!!!

  • How do you get that sweet Claypool tone?

  • Love the videos. Keep it up!

  • Thank you for that, that was a really good breakdown of that song.

  • that is a great sounding bass.....you are very good at what you do. what kind of wood did you use for the body? walnut?

  • This bass is almost all african mahogany.

  • How much does it cost to make a bass like that.
