I was taught this very same technique in my 4th grade science class (in 1965). Based on that experience (and my teacher's instructions), I suggest using a large champagne bottle (because of the very thick glass) and placing that bottle in deep pan of ice water (because the mixture in the bottle gets quite hot).

there is the risk of the explosion getting into the glass container and the resulting mayhem of broken glass travelling at high speed coated with lye adding to the pain when the glass embeds into your soft body tissue

It'sb etter to do this with Al, and draino. Produces much more H2. Also, if you take a 2 liter, put 2 prongs connected to a car battery in the bottles bottom, fill with water, cap it, turn on the battery, it produces tons and tons of H2 gas.
