the officer here did not abuse his authority. he used verbal commands. it's up to the skaters to choose whether or not to obey his lawful commands. if they choose to disobey them then force continuum is used. all the skaters needed to do was stop, listen and obey. did you know he was enforcing a law that protects pedestrians?

When America was founded, there came also social contract: people submit in the form of taxation and community, and the government preserves the basics for citizens: life, liberty, and property. the police represent the governmental law set up to protect these rights, enforcers of citizen protection. no one was in danger in this situation, therefore no need for police interference in the first place.
pedestrians were in danger. which is why the law was created. that boardwalk receives a high amount of foot traffic because it's a tourist area.

Writing the kids tickets isn't ridiculous. It's a means of letting them know the city is serious about their laws. Yes, make the parents pay. That way the parents come down on the kids.

Let's establish a working premise 1st. To start, the reason they can't ride the skateboards where they were riding them is a safety issue. That not only protects pedestrians & skaters alike, it protects the businesses who might get sued in the event of injury. Understand that. Also understand that 1 kid ran. That's resisting. It's incumbent upon citizens to comply with officers. I know it's a bitter pill but better to comply & fight well in court than fight on the spot with a heavily armed man.
@HaoleJames Also, you have to understand that the police are human beings. They can be abusive assholes. But they're still human. They experience the same range of emotions as you do. Imagine doing a job you may not like (arresting a child), which is already potentially objectionable AND you have to go down to your knees which makes you physically vulnerable. Then picture being circled angry kids with skateboards in their hands. The situation was already intense by the time he chased the kid.
@HaoleJames I think choking a 13yr old in most contexts is inappropriate. But in this case, he had to act quickly to not only make the arrest but ensure his & the kid's safety. Sometimes you have to use moderate force to avoid using extreme force. I'm sure you understand that principle.
As for calling them "thugs", that's not accurate here. The officer was on the job. The other officer had to follow suit. Otherwise their level of authority is compromised. They can't afford that public image.

These kids were in the wrong. Maybe their parents should have done better at raising them so the police dont have to clean up after them.

@HaoleJames The kids were riding skateboards where they weren't supposed to be riding them. The cop was making an arrest because they weren't sticking around to accept the ticket. Was his force excessive? That's touch & go.

The Officers involved in this accident were nothing but thugs w/ a badge and a gun, If the kids run let them run, they're kids. Even writing a kid a ticket is a little rediculous, they were probably too young to have jobs and you're gonna have their parents pay a fine cuz they were skateboarding?

@HaoleJames It's absolutely touch & go. His job is to defuse & resolve certain situations. Everyone was already ratcheted up. He had to establish his authority. He's the POLICE.
Writing the kids tickets isn't ridiculous. It's a means of letting them know the city is serious about their laws. Yes, make the parents pay. That way the parents come down on the kids.
I don't always care for police but I understand they've a job to do.

Let's establish a working premise 1st. To start, the reason they can't ride the skateboards where they were riding them is a safety issue. That not only protects pedestrians & skaters alike, it protects the businesses who might get sued in the event of injury. Understand that. Also understand that 1 kid ran. That's resisting. It's incumbent upon citizens to comply with officers. I know it's a bitter pill but better to comply & fight well in court than fight on the spot with a heavily armed man.

@HaoleJames Also, you have to understand that the police are human beings. They can be abusive assholes. But they're still human. They experience the same range of emotions as you do. Imagine doing a job you may not like (arresting a child), which is already potentially objectionable AND you have to go down to your knees which makes you physically vulnerable. Then picture being circled angry kids with skateboards in their hands. The situation was already intense by the time he chased the kid.

@HaoleJames I think choking a 13yr old in most contexts is inappropriate. But in this case, he had to act quickly to not only make the arrest but ensure his & the kid's safety. Sometimes you have to use moderate force to avoid using extreme force. I'm sure you understand that principle.
As for calling them "thugs", that's not accurate here. The officer was on the job. The other officer had to follow suit. Otherwise their level of authority is compromised. They can't afford that public image.

I don't want to see a mom & pop business get sued by a skater's parents simply because they can. That's why the ordinances about skateboarding are in place. And given the fact that it's easy to get away from a stationery cop when you're in motion, I understand why he had to grab everyone.

He had to be a complete goon because 1 kid in the group had already established that he wasn't tryna hear shit the cop was saying. BELIEVE ME, I don't care for cops either. But as I've gotten older, I've learned about the gray areas in life. This is 1 of those gray areas.

this is a free country, if I go skating and I don't see signs up for no boarding then Ima skate, and that's my defence. Skateboarding is not a sin, and I'll be damned if someones gonna stop us from having a good time. if we're skating obv we know the risk, and to arrest a kid for that shit is bull shit. Fuck that I woulda blasted that cop so hard. First of all, sidewalks are public property and I don't see cops arresting bikers on the side of the road, same thing if you ask me.
