  • May 26, 1979. wow.

I remember watching this as a young child on SNL (but I couldve sworn it was on Tom Snyder)and not knowing anything about Tom Waites, or Bette Midler, or this song,... but I was mesmorized, and when Bette's voice cracks and that tear runs down her cheek... wow.

Years and years later I tried to remember WHAT song this was... And here it is.

  • she sings it beautifully but I hate the fact that she changes the lyrics

  • @Tresfres I can understand a Tom Waits fan likes most original versions as well. I just wonder if Tom had anything to do with her arrangement.

  • @aotweb2 I think songs are like poems, you simply can't change the lyrics. As a performer you must let me believe that you are that particular character even if that's different from your gender. Having said that as I said I love the way she sings it

  • @Tresfres Bette tweeks lyrics all the time..which is how she makes the songs her own. God Bless Bette!! AND Tom Waits!!!

  • Divine?

  • So tender, you can feel the love that exists in those words. Her voice seems so muggy that you can feel a love lost. It puts a complete and different spin on the song hearing it come from a lover, be it past or present. Just lovely

  • Decent version. My only real problem with it is the first half or so of each verse sounds quite rushed.

  • Way better, way way better than I was expecting. I love how she very obviously felt the emotion of the words and the music. Performances like this one make the world go around.

  • pretty great

  • this is great and very cute :-)

  • Saw Bette doing "Martha" on SNL years ago. I've looked for it on all her CDs and never found it. Thrilled to be able to listen to it here. When she gets that catch in her voice, how can you not feel what she's feeling? Tom Waits' song is brought to perfection by Bette's vocal performance.

  • No problem. Glad I could help....

  • The song is called "Martha" for future reference.....

  • @TheDivineMisterD Thank you so much. I could never find the title or match lyrics for this song. I was hoping someone who knew would enlighten me.
