Seriously, I don't see why the Corps doesn't just field this weapon in place of the M249. Full length as opposed to the 16.5" barrel of the 416 - which is still an M4 knock-off, lighter than the M249, with a steady rate of fire that won't dry up your squad or affect your accuracy. If they want a gas piston system, they should get it in their standard infantry rifles. Replace the M16/M4 and SAW with two new weapons...and please...give them a real caliber, not a plink toy.
@Fyrefox808 Suppression isnt about ROF. Bullets being fired at 500 RPM over your head will make you duck the same as bullets being fired at 800 RPM. Conserving ammo and maintaing a steady accurate stream of fire is what is important.
buying the IAR isnt even about replacing the saw. They have no intention of doing that. They are just saying they are and buying some "automatic rifles" so they can get their hands on some HK416's without having to argue with congress about it.
theyre not replacing the SAW. they are going in alongside it in the Marine Corps. they are only getting rid of 4000 SAW's, there will still be 8000 SAWs left. they will remain in each battalion, and will be used according to mission type.
The sun causes global warming idiot. And carbon/co2 has no effect on the so called environment. The Pcean is responsible for 99.9% of CO2 in the stmossphere go bitch Poseidon calls you a dumb bitch.
Being a Singaporean soldier who has fought in the army I can say that the Ultimax is a really awesome weapon. Good firepower/accuracy for weight ratio.
The LWRC is a turd compared to this. In my honest opinion, the LWRC is nothing more than a fully automatic M16 or M4 that can fire Open Bolt. Woo! If the Ultimax doesn't get selected, I think I'll just go in the Army and deal with wretched M249 <( Insert Sarcasam) and have to put up with the extra 170 rounds of ammunition.
not really...it just seems that way cuz the gun is slightly off balanced in the front...so it kinda helps to bring down the muzzle making it look recoiless...there's no such thing as recoiless guns my friend...especially in automatic weapons lol
The U.S. military bureaucracy does a lot of stupid things. Belt-feeding a LMG at the fireteam level is one of them. Following a crowd over the cliff is not wise.
Well we learned the lesson the hard way in WWII and then Korea as troops got pinned down and chopped up by large volumes of continuous fire from belt fed German then Communist machine guns while UK and US were limited to 20/30 round BAR and BREN guns.
The belt fed M249 and M240 has been more popular with the troops then their rifles, with 200 rounds of continuous suppressive fire. Plus you can carry more ammo in belts than magazines and are more reliable in sand/mud/extreme conditions.
It is bout 5kg empty, when fully loaded with 100 round mag it is bout 7.2 kg which is considerably light. you can turn it into a assault rife urself, by removin the stock if it suits you.
South East Asian armies love this Lion City built LMG. Less recoil for the smaller builds. Easy barrel change. 100 rounds of gas piston reliability on tap. Mud, sand, hell and high water...it keeps shooting. Singapore says "Go ahead, reach out and touch somebody....many times". Even our presidential security group escorts carry this...while riding Kawasaki Ninja Bikes. Pretty wild.
Basic requirement for and LMG is the ability to remove a hot barrel. Whats the procedure for this one or is it a fixed barrel? Fixed barrel's like the HK versions were turned down specifically for this reason. Throwing a drum mag on something doesn't make it a SAW.
Now if they want to claim its not and LMG and instead go for the carbine/infantry rifle then you have to compare weights with current inventories.
Do your homework, this is the Ultimax, considered the best LMG in the world by pretty much everyone who's opinion I respect and of course, it has a quick change barrel. The US Army won't adopt it though because it is not produced by one of the "anointed manufacturers" even though ironically it was designed by the legendary Jim Sullivan (designer of the now much copied AR18). Unlike the other weak efforts (LWRC IAR) this is a true SAW and is also designed to have minimal recoil in full auto.
That's a truly God-given, but I somehow doubt US will ever end up fielding any.
In the US arms buisiness, you can't win unless your company is big, rich, prestigious, and already has every key general, admiral, and politician in it's hip pocket --- Ultimax just isn't that kind of corporation.

nah, the US is unlikely to adopt this gun. It's not made by their military industrial complex.

True on the more ammo portion, but I hear M249's are extremely shitty with sand/debret in the chamber during combat.

Amen, a belt-fed weapon can never be replaced by a box/magazine fed weapon. The BAR, M14A2 and M16LSW should have proven that,,,

@albertkc2007 Just 100 rounds?! Well, comparing that to a AK-49 would be unfair, but eve though. . .
