Okay, yes, we know that Never Let Me Down is considered Bowie's worst album and yes, there are some weak songs, but Shining Star is a wonderful little song and there are others that are good too. People should give this album a fair listen and form their own opinions ... I think people are too swayed by Bowie's disdain of this record, which, in turn, was swayed by the critics disdain of it.
Wow, I thought it was bowie. But on listening more intently, Bowie is singing the majority and Rouke is only saying a few lines inbetween eg. "10 g's flat", "Sinn Fein Hitler cashdown", debts in hell and fingers in blood", and finally he repeats "Another life in the grave"...Pointless really tho, but a great song.
I'm convinced that Bowie himself is not qualified to assess his own music.
He has so many songs, like Shining Star, We Are the Dead, Lady Grinning Soul, As the World Falls Down, etc. etc., that should have been played live but never were.
When I saw Bowie in Minneapolis about 5 years ago I held up a sign that said "Shining Star" on one side and "We Are the Dead" (for Garson) on the other.
That's exactly what I thought! Too bad that in the highs and lows of the material decade, these two never teamed up. Just imagine, seemingly carefree Bowie helps pouting Prince to open up to the world (and share his music...) until both are dancing in the street :p
mickey sounds like lou :)

I think this was a terrific album and yes, if this is his worse, then his best is beyond amazing! I really dig "Time Will Crawl."

You're absolutely right. When I first heard this track I thought, "This is really good, but it's not what I'd call typical Bowie"
But then, what is typical Bowie? This just proves he has no inhibitions when it comes to sound. His vision knows no limit. The man is pure genius.
Where? Oh, where have our musical geniuses gone?
I think very few people can appreciate a track like this. They're too caught up in the stereotype of what defines cutting edge and underground.

Too bad there wasn't a proper video for this. The combination of Bowie and Mickey Rouke is such an oddly charming combination.
