If thiis was caused by a strep infection - why didn't any boys get this or family members of these girls? I think all avenues should be looked into. People shouldn't arrive at quick conclusions. The first thing I would do is figure is a link (perhaps a certain class or event) that these girls (on a whole attended). They should do blood tests, of course, for strep infection. Chemicals and compounds in the school should be tested as well. I wish these girls the best.

This is a very complex situation. However, it is not the only time it has happened. Episodes of "Mass Hysteria" were frequent during the H1N1 vaccination campaign of 2009. One involved 350 students in 23 different schools in Taiwan. They developed symptoms almost immedately after vaccination; still deemed "Mass Hysteria."

Strep & other bacterial infections (& viral infections) are opportunistic infections. If the blood brain barrier is intact, it is impermeable to infectious agents and toxins. Aluminum, mercury and polysorbate 80 cause increased permeabiliby in the blood brain barrier - the BBB develops holes, which allow toxins and antigens to enter what should be a sterile environment. It's not just strep, other bacterial & viral infections also invade the CNS when the BBB is damaged by vaccines.

A doctor can check the ASO's to see if there was a recent strep infection. Cunningham has done research and has identified the antibodies involved. This research showed it has an effect on a brain chemical that affects dopamine. In my opinion it is more than an auto-immune disorder if more than one in a group gets it. I think there is problem with the type of strep itself.

It's a partial-coverage vaccine, meaning that it only targets a fraction of the total strains of streptococcus that cause pneumonia. Partial coverage vaccines cause those strains not included to become stronger in response to attempts to eradicate the bacteria.

@treevisit partial coverage vaccines are also why so many people who have been fully vaccinated against pertussis, pneumococcus, and meningitis are getting those diseases. The vaccines are no longer effective because the bacteria have mutated and the strains causing the illness are not the ones contained in the vaccines. So when you get vaccinated, you are assuming all of the risk for none of the proposed benefit.

If any of you parents read this. I have been going through with this for 2 years with my 22 year old. It is sydenham's chorea. Pandas is a new term for this old disease. Most doctors in the US have not enough experience with it including neurologists and rheumatologists dispite what they say. It is thought to be caused by a reaction to the strep infection. Some doctors will say it can only be cause by strep A but they are wrong. Strep C can also cause it.

Aluminum is the adjuvent in many of the vaccines that are now required for high school students to attend public school (unless their parents exercise their right to religious and/or philosophical exemptions). @DoItYourSelf12100 It's a bacteria that embeds itself in a certain strep strain. So, when he said it's a type of strep, she probably figured everyone knows that strep can go around. The disease itself is not contagious. Strep is. Then they come in contact with the bacteria. That's how they get it.

If anyone knows how to reach this family, tell them to have her hair tested for heavy metals. If she had the Gardasil vaccine, she may be aluminum toxic and that can cause tics.

Conversion Disorder is a scapegoat doctors throw around when they don't know what is wrong. But if you look up the diagnostic criteria for Conversion Disorder I bet it doesn' t fit.

My young son was diagnosed with PANDAS in Sept. of 2011 after a bout of strep and scarlet fever. Fortunately my DH and I remembered Sammy from Mystery Diagnosis and I googled sudden onset OCD and came up with PANDAS. He has been on antibiotics for 4 months and is gradually improving. He also has tics and Chorea-like movements. Thanks for posting this video! It is so important to get the word out. Many children go undiagnosed and are put on SSRI's etc. that don't treat the underlying cause!

One reason I posted this video is that my daughter was diagnosed with PANDAS on December 27, 2011. She had Scarlet Fever in March of 2010, and immediately started exhibiting OCD in the form of contamination fears, a symptom of PANDAS. Her symptoms increased exponentially and took her (and us) on a scary and life altering course of disturbing and dangerous behavior. No one could help us understand her behavior, so my wife an I put a timeline together and figure out the Strep A connection.

It's infuriating that there is no information about PANDAS and the dangers of strep available at pediatric offices or at public schools. I hope that if Strep A (PANDAS Syndrome or Sydenham's Chorea) is the culprit in this case, that the CDC raises at least a warning to all school systems across the country. There is no need to create a panic, but education is crucial in making sure infected children get the correct diagnosis and treatment.

@BornInTzyon My child is still on Augmentin and it has helped with 75% of the issues. We are working with an immunologist to see if there are any other pathogens or toxins messing with her immune system or provoking inflammation to the basal ganglia. There are several different types of blood test and urine tests that must be run in order to get a complete view of what all is triggering these problems.  Strep is definitely a factor, but is it the only factor? We still don't know.

I have severe OCD and my strep titers were fine. I'm not saying this isn't infection-related, just that my strep titers were normal. If it does turn out to be strep/PANDAS though, what caused it? I urge the parents of these girls to find out if WIFI was recently introduced in this school. Was a cell phone, wifi, or radio antenna recently erected nearby? Google the Bioinitiative Report. Doctors in other countries are sounding the alarm.

PANDAS is a debilitating illness that absolutely exists despite the controversy that surrounds it (much like all other autoimmune conditions when first researched). Without early diagnosis and treatment it's symptoms can continue to evolve and severely deteriorate the physical & cognitive function of the affected child. I agree with mcairo67 that it is odd that it's only girls that have it right now.

Maandrixe, the school has already ruled out environmental factors, though no one is 100% certain. Dr. Siegel is merely making a prediction based on the sudden onset of Tourette's like symptoms and other neurological expressions the girls are showing. If it is not PANDAS, I believe it is Sydenham's Chorea, a cousin of PANDAS also caused by Strep A. It's just odd that only girls have caught this. Sydenham's Chorea is mainly diagnosed in women, so that's what might be the telling factor here.
