The water acts like anti-freeze does in a car. Keeps the motor cool. Since there is no anti-freeze the motor sucks in the lake water thru the slots behind the prop, then it circulates thru the engine and back out the exaust. When the boat isnt in the lake you have to hook it up to a water hose to simulate a lake.

The water surrounds the headers and keeps them cool and exits in the tips. If not you would have "FIRE'' in the boat.
