Served on her from 79-83 while in Yoko. Did many donuts out in the Persian Gulf. Was an IC worked in PLAT, and CCTV as well as Foward IC. How odd is it to miss going out to sea on that ship. Never thought I would but I sure do. Hello to all the fellow shipmates that have stumbled across this video. :)
The USS Midway was, and still is, a fantastic ship. I spent all four years in the Navy aboard her, 1960 to 1963. I was ships company - V-6 Div. I have many very fond memories from those four years and would not trade them for anything.
I went aboard the Midway again just a few years back and almost didn't recognize her. She has gone through a dramatic change since I was aboard but many of the same planes there flew back then are aboard and I loved that.
I visited the Midway on Oct. 30th 2010. Had great difficulty to come aboard because I booked via Hornblower tours for a combinattion tour through the harbor + visit Midway at 4.15pm. However, the ship closes at 5 pm and lets the last guests in till 4 pm. You really have to count with this. As for the ship: a wonderfull experience! The hosts (often former retired navy personell and pilots) are very willing to tell you their stories. This guy from Holland had a once in a lifetime experience!
I was on the USS Midway in 1980 as a Gunnersmate Technician. If you were on it then, get in touch with me. I am still trying to find my old buddies in my division. We was stationed out of Yokuska Japan. Had some really great times on that old chunk of steel. I was on it when we got hit on the side by another large boat that ripped a big hole in it. Had to go to drydock.( Larry Sbrusch) txdashcovers
I visited this wounderful ship once. I would love to go again it's alittle bit tight quarter's inside and alittle stuffy but it's worth it Uss Ronald Regan was on the dock's to when I visited her
I was on the Midway when it left Yoko for the last time. It was my first ship, I was on four carriers during my career. I did not know at the time how special Midway was because it was my first ship. The crew was real tight. Ships company and air wing worked real close together. The atmosphere was real laid back compare to other carriers. We had good liberty, no restrictions like the other carriers had. Midway will always be special to me.
my father served on teh ship in Vietnam in mid 60's/ Can't wait to get him out there so i can listen to him tell his stories from where they actually happened.
We moored up next to the Skidway for years...It's an awesome ship! Watched her leave Yoko for the last time from the pier. Not a dry eye in the house...A well deserved retirement for a well respected hero....(From a former Blueridge sailor)
Hadn't heard Blueridge in forever. I was on the Midway when it left YoKo. It is weird to say that you love a big chunk of metal, But that will always be my ship. I've probably cried three times in my life. If I get to California to see my ship, I can tell you right now #4 will go down.
I served aboard the Midway early in my career, before my tour on board I was on the USS Towers DDG9. We were the plane gaurd, and I remember a fire that occured on the Midway. Casualities were unfortunately a result of the fire. So to answer you're questions... YES there were casualities on board.
I spent five years of my youth on the Midway when it was home ported in Yoko. If you get the chance, you shouldn't miss the opportunity to go on it and spend the day walking around on the Midway. Take your time and get a bite to eat at the fantail cafe. You'll be glad you did. And while your on Midway, look for us guys who are Midway Veterans. We love answering questions and talking about our experiences on the ship with people who come and visit our O'l Gray Lady, the Midway.
@YukeMansion . What years were you on it. I was on it in 1980-1981. I was a gunnermate tech on it..I had a blast on the hunk of steal and really had a lot of fun when we hit ports like Korea, Thailand, Subic bay and many more.. Sure would llike to hook up with my old buddies in my division. txdashcovers
Is that true? There were no fatalities on the ship in all the years it was in service? I find that really hard to fathom (get it?). I was on the Independence for 2 cruises and one workup and we averaged 3 to 4 deaths per cruise.
I did do some research and that's not true. There were many accidents on Midway that resulted in deaths. An aircraft carrier is one of the most dangerous environments a person can work on and it would be incomprehensible for a ship to serve 50 years and not have any deaths on it.
@gtc1961 Yes you are quite right. During the four years I spent on the Midway we lost approximately 5 or 6 pilots. No fires aboard during my time but even during peace time it is a very dangerous place to be. Of the four years aboard, I spend almost a year on the flight deck. At least twice, both during launch and recovery, had things gone just a bit different I would have been one of those casualties. Not a place to not be paying attention to what is around you.
No casualties occur due to combat. There were casualties because of fire. We had a fire while I was on board that took the lifes. The fire was not combat related.
I served on the USS Coral Sea unfortunately she was scraped in 2000 but i am glad one of the 3 Midway Class was kept and we who served on them have a piece of our history
Thanks for the video! Brought back some fond memories. I was on MIDWAY during DESERT STORM until her final voyage. I crossdecked over to USS INDEPENDENCE at Pearl Harbor as MIDWAY steamed toward San Diego for Decommissioning in '92.
