  • I got a speeding ticket once. I was listening to this song while driving.

  • Can someone tell me who's filling in for Craig Ware(bass trombonist) in this recording?

  • @ChuCkyKiLLER001 Craig Gosnell.

  • @LightSpeed99999 Good looking out....I blame it on the video quality :)

  • this must be pretty old all different trumpet players

  • Playing part of this for Marching Band!!!!!

  • Why is Andy playing 2nd part?

  • @Dorgannn they switch off parts on every song, probably because all 3 tenor trombonists can handle any music given.

  • Sssh. Be vewwy, vewwy quiet. I'm wwistening to music :D

  • Amazingly talented group! My favorite music!

  • at 2:20 the fun begins! Let my transcripting begin!

  • Haha! just played with Andy Martin and his bros, as guest artists with the Northgate High School Jazz Band at Irvine High School in CA yesterday. those three guys smash

  • whoever disliked this is a fag

  • @derekw432 They just didn't like anything past 8:04. That's the horrible part.

  • He's so awesome, he shot a bullet from his finger and struck a small, silver triangle less than a diameter in thickness in a fairly dark room from over 30 feet away at the end.

  • 7:06 Is why I play. And why I faint.

  • jay mason is such a good guy that he was nice enough to be one of our judges at the mayfair jazz festival

  • this song is incredible. Long Live Jazz!!!

  • my high school band is playing this song at oheka castle feb. 7th! come check us out at the best of long island confrence

  • @CLAMPOWER10 I looked this up and cant believe someone else wrote on this lmao who is this? its shane

  • @OLShane

    Andrew haha

  • you know i love this song cause it doesnt sound like jazz, now if we could just remove the solos. sorry not a fan of jazz

  • LONG LIVE THE PHAT BAND!!

  • ...go jay mayson lol

  • Gordon Goodwins Big Phat Band is the greatest big band I've heard. Its the dream team of big bands.

  • I swear This band's main audience is mainly high school students who have played their music.

    That's why I'm here.

  • my band are playing this off by heart at the royal albert hall on monday ! can't wait! :D:D

  • oh my god. that pinch to the double d? SO GOOD

  • Id be so scared to play triangle in that lol, that one note changes the entire piece 8)

  • dammit thats clean!

  • shame you guys didn't get to hear bernie...he's incredible

  • Haha!! Yes!! That was me and my friends from going crazy in the beginning. I love Gordon's reaction: he turns his head like, "What the ... ????" Wow, they are unreal man! That was such an amazing show!! Eric Marienthal, YOU ROCK!!

  • have to learn this without sheet music... eurgh

  • jazz, the one genre were the majority of people who listen to it and comment about it actually know what they are talking about and what they are listening to.

  • @Jac0bReg amen!

  • @Jac0bReg SPEAKS THE TRUTH!!!!

  • I love this song. The double D is awesome, but how about that whole song with a single frack, lots of other notes above high C.

  • band is so tight. every section sounds like one instrument.

  • wow. i love this song. and i play the bari sax. the solo was great. :)

  • its not its just the shadow

  • i'm new to jazz...but the baritone sax (in the solo) why is the mouthpiece like a trumpet-tuba-trombone-frenchhorn-ect? what's it called?

  • the word you're looking for is brass mouthpiece

  • @starGASPstarOMGLOLZ It's not a brass mouthpiece. The quality of video is just low and makes it look weird.

  • @evergreach2346 haha gotcha! Thanks

  • 7:05 I listen to a lot of jazz music (have been since I was 10 years old) and I don't know if I've ever heard a smear up to a note like that on trumpet....

  • @saxev2005 Thats wayne for ya.

  • D above doudle high c

  • Wayne Bergeron man he is my idol. I kept playing that double D over and over again. He plays the squealing trumpet on the incredibles theme. Oh man.

  • @sk8rinuse actually, rick baptist was the screamer on that. wayne played second trumpet. look up rick baptist, gary grant, jerry hey, etc. they are even better than bergeron.

  • @RogerSquawk Mmmmm not so sure. Rick Baptist isn't there if I'm not mistakin... he has darker skin than any of those guys. And anyway, just look at Bergeron when you hear the double D, it just is clearly him, you see he his oppening widely his troath and bending the knees a bit (screamer technique)

  • @RogerSquawk oh, and btw, he says it at the end of the video lol, after the song :P and sorry i mistook your comment, you didn't implied that rick baptist was the screamer in this song, my mistake (haha). Still, it's Bergeron on that double D :P

  • Bari solo!

  • Andy Martin at 1:05 "Damn, this weird stuff"

  • 6:58-6:59 Wayne is telling Bob, "Watch this man, Im gonna hit that D just for you" hahhahahahaha

  • holy crap, im not a brass player but im guessing that d is not in the staff d

  • it's actually 2 octaves above the D that's in the staff

  • @tedshaw and right after that Bob goes "woah man!"

  • @tedshaw hehe i got out my trumpet and played a high D (an octave lower than he just did) to make sure it was a D :D

  • @tedshaw except that was Dan F he told.....

  • razzy

  • yeea triangle!

  • Eric Marienthal...

    I wish you weren't married!

    :D

  • hahah, marienthal is a beast. I actually met him last week, amazing player.

  • I met him not to long ago. Sat down and had a nice long chat with him

  • Can i have some of what your smoking?

    '

  • bari solo??? FREAKIN AWESOME im a trombone player but a good bari player is amazing

  • Thats Jay Mason for you!! Awesome player

  • I love this band.

If you look at the cover of the Hunting Wabbits chart, it shows Gordon Goodwin leaping into the air while conducting.

I've always found that ridiculous, but awesome.

  • That bass bone player is just beastly

  • ha no joke.

we're playing this and I cant hit that B.

maybe using a bass would help. regardless he plays it like it's nothing. Watch "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" if you really want to see him dominate.

  • yeah I played this last year in my school's jazz band and I had a hard time hitting it, you definitely need a double trigger.

  • well we have 5 bones in our band..dont ask me why...but the 5th chair guy is playin the bass, but he cant get it either so we're at a loss.

  • hah! we've got 7. but you can barely hear 3 of them. wimps. Plus we only have 4 trumpets and 5 saxes.

  • ouch that sucks. but it's mass volume from trombones right?

  • Well like I said you can't hear 3 of them, so it sounds like parts 1,2, and 4 (bass). So no. I wish though.

  • ONLY 4 TRUMPETS AND 5 SAXES? You SHOULD only have 4 trumpets and 5 saxes. And 4 trombones. not seven. big band charts aren't written with those numbers in mind. its 4, 4, and 5. theres no need for more and no excuse for any less!

  • I realize that 4,4, and 5 is the ideal number. I'm saying that in proportion to 7 trombones, 4 and 5 are small numbers.

  • Comment removed

  • To stay idiomatic to the big band genre, you're not going to get away with having a regular group with anything much different from 4 plus or minus one in the brass sections and 5 saxes.

Doubling more than one part (and even this can be pushing it) that isn't scored to be doubled is not doing the music justice.

  • Wayne Bergeron just played a high D like it was nothing. ROFL!

  • I love the contrast of Lazano's laid back style to Marienthals technical wizardry. :D

  • I was somewhat surprised when I saw this. Lozano is brilliant.

  • For anyone doubting his ability watch his video of him playing play that funky music or cherokee.......

  • Just to let everyone know. The part after the solo is like an Afro-Cuban/Swing Fusion. This song has 3 different styles that all contrast equally. This is just another piece that proves Gordon Goodwin's genius.

  • do you have ears?

  • just because he played clashing notes in the start of his solo does not mean at all that he has no sense of the chord changes he moves through the chords flawlessly in the later part of the solo. his timing is impeccable. once again he is creating tension at the start of his solo by playing notes that clash with the beat. you obviously don't understand jazz very well

  • Dexter gordon Plays with lots of tension

  • you're a wackjob dude. figure it out

  • obviously you dont know what a good solo sounds like. listen to those ideas! No he's not wiling like eric (1st alto in the band) but you cant beat some of tose runs or ideas he has. and as far as time is concerned in his solo. He was laying back to get to the end of the solo!

  • It's a minor chord throughout most of the changes and allows for one to play outside. Sal is one of the highest paid studio musicians for a reason.

  • Ok, I am not denying the fact that this guy is an extremely talented jazz saxophonist, but all I am saying is that his solo in this live version of this song was extremely dissapointing. Dissonance is only appealing to me if it meets some sweet resolution

  • It really gets me that people are all saying that it would've been better if they didn't do the swing section. It sounds great!!! You guys couldn't do better It's time to take a quote from the legendary Bob Marley: "I know I'm not perfect and I don't try to be, But before you start pointing your fingers make sure your hands are clean.

  • the swing stays people.

  • Everyone commenting are just little experts, aren't they?

  • The classical style at the beginning is neat but after a while it gets boring. I think the swing section adds a good color to it. The recording definitely comes off better with the trombone solo.

  • Of course they could have played a style to better suit the song but maybe on the day they just played what felt right to them. Sometimes going against what should be played makes for a better performance. It was a live gig aswell so the atmosphere would have been a lot different. I have so much respect for these guys and of course you can critisise every single tiny detail that may be out of place, but that still doesn't ditract from their amazing talents as musicians.

  • the swing section is there to contrast the strictness of the beginning and end of the piece. i understand what youre saying, but it would be very difficult, if doable at all, to construct a solo section to go with the beginning. also, the defining feature of latin music is the many percussion rhythms, and a lot of blues music is written with a laid back feel intended. similar to swing, they dont really fit the idea from the start of the song.

  • I think it was very appropriate.... The CD recording is great

  • Nope, not a screamo fan. I just really don't think that the incredibly tight, clean, intro ought to be destined to become another yawner of an improv section. There's nothing you can do in the same song as the beginning that would better prove your mastery as a jazz ensemble. Basically, it lost anything noteworthy once the improv section started.

  • Playing this song for jazz band. Can't wait!

  • what do you mean? that doesn't make any sense, the song is over when the song is over, how can it be over when the swing seciton starts. it's swing because that's the solo section, and then it goes on from there.

  • This is what I have to say. I'd like to see all of you people who are making reamarks to people's playing. I'd like to see you guys in their shoes trying to do what they do. It's not all easy and they are human. They sounded great. And that song is amazing.

  • look at andy martin on 1:07 hehehe

  • i know man i just saw that yesterday! Did not hit that note right i think lol

  • yeah, it sounds like the bass trombone was doing a little ad lib there.

  • Bonafide monsters in every section of the band, as always. As for you naysayers, don't let your mouth write checks that your a** can't cash. Sal could write volumes regarding his experiences, but would probably rather just play, and play, and play. I look forward to that.

  • What are you guys talking about? Sal Lozano rocks!

  • Guys, Sal Lozano is an amazing woodwind player! He can play multiple instruments as if hes dedicated a full life time to each one! He is also an amazingly nice guy, soon as you construct a solo like his ill actually aknowledge your critisism.

  • Can't please everybody

  • I guess so Sal :)

  • the lighting on jay makes him look all weird.

  • there are more than enough players out there that who are looking to make a name for themselves with a well known big band who can play.

  • Perhaps you should get in touch with Sal Lozano via his web site and offer to show him how it should be done? I presume Gordon's waiting until he's rich enough to be able to afford you. Eric's probably quaking in his boots too..............

  • w/e man you can talk all the crap you want, thats how i feel about his playing you dont have to agree. as far as eric, i got no beef with him, cat can play.

  • That is Exactly Why We are Watching Sal Solo and not you ..... DOuche BAg

  • yeah it was pretty bad apart from the jive quarter note triplets in the begining and the failed altissimo at 4:57, well goodwin should be able to hire beter sax players no?

  • i do, i can!

  • and thats why eric marienthal should do all the alto solos.....

  • why do you say that?

    It wasn't even that bad...
