Umm, I'm not so keen on the schizophrenic jokes in this ep. It does seem to stray too far into insensitive, disrespectful territory. Other than that I agree the performances are really good but it's a shame that the film digressed so much from the book. I think a lot of the pathos-and hope-present in the book is lost in the screen adaptation. The Spill team were actually more generous about it than I thought they'd be.

You are on the right track. The people that point out racism are often the most race stereotype obsessed people out there. I often see comments and critques to the effect that some character wasn't 'black enough' and so on. Such people are trying to help but they can't see the forest for the trees.

The end of this reminded me of a bugs bunny cartoon called "What's Up Doc?" where famous Elmer Fudd snootily brushes off al jolson, Jack Benny, Eddie Cantor, and Bing Crosby who are down and out. I wonder if the animators reference that scene because it look so similar.
