I have a copy of the letter and form, if you can't get nowhere with Dealer or GM, send me your email address and I will email you a copy. This problem with the steering and my fight with GM caused me a stress overload and now I suffer major medical problems. I will be happy to help anyone I can to prevent this from happening to anyone else. My email address is evelynstweety@yahoo.com
Thank you very much for this information. I have been very frustrated both with how little help that the dealer was able to offer and with GM not covering this defect automatically.
On August 9, 2010 GM sent a general letter out to all 2008 Malibu Owners stating the problem with the Electric Power Steering (EPS). GM agree to coverage this repair for 10 years up to 100,000 miles. If your car has under a 100,000 miles and you paid out of your pocket GM will reimburse you, but you need to fill out the Customer Reimbursement form within 60 days of repair and have the reciept for the repair. Call GM and request the Reimbursement Form. I hope this helps you.
I had this same problem with my 2008 Malibu. After the 2nd time I left the car at the dealer they finally determined that the problem was the steering module. The part number is 20879612. See item 15 in the drawing at this link.
I was charged $461.82 for the part and $197.80 for labor.
This is clearly a design failure on the part of GM.
Unfortunately, I bought a 2008 Chevy Malibu last year and it has just recently started doing the exact same thing. If I don't have the stereo on I can actually hear a humming and slight knocking noise coming from the power steering unit. A few days ago it actually showed 'POWER STEERING' on the mileage display. So far, it hasn't been bad enough to lose control of the car, but it's a bit scary when you're going 75mph down the highway.
My 08 Malibu 106,000 miles is having this same issue and the dealer just told me they cant see an error code on it. It jerks back and forth while I am driving and I am 1.000 miles from home with my 90 year old mother. I'm afraid to drive it home. The dealer charged me 105.00 to tell me nothing was showing up as being wrong with it.

That is exactly what my 2008 Malibu does. I left it at the dealership for a day and they had no idea of what to do. They said that I looked fine while it was is the shop.
forgot to add that GM payed me back for one month of my monthly finace cost 300.00 for having to deal with an issue that the dealership was having problems fixing
GM will fix the issue, its just that people would rather bitch then get off there ass and tell them, Pretty sure GM isnt sitting in their office looking for youtube videos about whats wrong with there cars. I had a problem like this along with a squealing, my dealership tried fixing it but couldnt, I called GM and even though my warranty was expired they took car of it, they had it brought to another dealership and replaced the sterring coulum, shaft, airbag, and rack and pinion, no more problems.
Well you was one of the fortunate ones. On the day I first started having problems out of my 07 Malibu, I contacted GM. When I called they acted as if they had no idea of the issue. My problem is that they did recalls on certain GM models, but not the Malibu.
GM fails to officially make a recall on power steering issues with 2008 Malibu and other models, but instead mails a letter stating you may have this problem. Unfortunately the dealers are passing the problem off saying "they can't duplicate" the involuntary intermittent jerking of the steering wheel. Well thanks to the internet and YouTube, they can now see hundreds of videos with the same problem and apparently the problem has been around for at least 5 years.
casals81,
I'm so happy to hear you got refunded for your repair, and 17 days is not to back.
