Every time i hear this song, it gives me chills down my spine, i can't understand how human(s) can make things like this, this is not music, this is a soul speaking (sorry for my bad english)
I have an early edition vinyl copy of the album hiding away somewhere. First heard it in about 1972/73 and absolutely loved it. Have been listening to it on and off ever since. Must drag it out for another play.
What a feel! Sounds like castles and forests and times of long ago and hints of vampires in the distance. I absolutely love this song. Beautiful & terrrifying at the same time....
@Luckzzz or....it could be a saw!When I lived in Belfast, early nineties there was this mysterious guy who had this kind of charabanc thing he pushed around, all brightly painted. He'd set up, sit down and play the saw, with a violin bow (obviously not the teeth side). He held it between his knees and bent it to get the different notes...and it sound exactly like the sound at the beginning of this song. Also, soundtrack to "One flew over The Cuckoos Nest" uses a guy playing a saw.
@cottageorgan i think you are right.it has always been in my mind that it was a saw played with a violin bow i dont know if thats what i read or where it came from but i bought this album when it was released
@doughsquid i stand corrected it just annoys me when people are looking for more than the obvious which is they were and are superb at their craft. take it for what it is. simply superb music it was then and probably even more now. i was there and it doesn't get easier if this is in your head it will stay there for life .

can anyone tell me if the first instrument played in this song is a theremin?

@atheistine sounds like it. Could be a really messed up slide guitar, who knows...

@atheistine it could be.. You can reproduce this sound with theremin.. or a midi controller(with pitch bend) with a pc..

@atheistine I think it's a slide rubbed on the high frets of a guitar.

@TheSkirtingboard
The Theremin was invented in the 1920s and has nothing to do with computers.
