I love the temate ( that'swhat they are called)!!! How can someone call this abusive. This a dance that has existed in the Dan culture for centuries. None of the performance I have seen have ever gotten hurt and if you seen the temate you know at one point one of the girls land on the knife no injuries. The adults even stab themselves with no injuries. I question I
f the protesters here are truly ivorian or even from the 18 mountain region. This use to fascinated me as child and still does.
Would you like your kids to be thrown in the air like this?
It's not because it is tradition that it is a good thing.
Some traditions should be reviewed.
Female circumcision is a tradition in some parts of the world, but it's still not an acceptable thing to do. So, please do not take tradition as alibi to do bad things.
this is only done with girls up to a certain age. Later their bodies are not so pliable.
The girls aren't hurt in the process. YOu can't compare this to female circumcision even if both are tradition. If the young girls were hurt in the process do you really think that
they would be doing this? How cruel do you take them? Look into this tradition before making quick judgments.
With all the respect I have for all the studies you might have done on this, it is still dangerous. I´m from this part of the world (Ivory Coast) and know pretty much about these dancers. What I´m qualifying as dangerous, it's not the flexibility of the girls but the fact that the guy is throwing them in the air holding a knife under. That's what I'm talking about. And I'm not making any quick judgments. It´s been years of observations. And I still say it is DANGEROUS. SHIT CAN HAPPEN.

jacobson elles ont ete entrainer pour ce genre de chose. Elles sont habituees, il ya rien de cruel ici. Arrete de villipender ce ki est inoffensif. merci
Groovemasta why are you crying foul when obviously no one is getting hurt? what is specfically your problem? because I do not understand the point of your complaint. The girls are not getting stabbed, they don't get sick from being thrown in the air, they are professionals at what they do....
groovemasta, these little girls are professionals because they've been trained to do this kind of thing and what more proof of their professionalism do you need after watching this video where they've been more than excellent. You're complaining about something that may happen while completely ignoring what is actually happening. The We people have performed this thousands of times before, how many times have you heard of the little girls being injured for you to label it as dangerous?
@groovemastaa no actualy its is part of the ritual they wont get hurt because the spirit wotn allow it why wont you be open minded please theyre professionals becaus eof the spirit
It's a traditional, cultural thing. You're being very ignorant to that by complaining about it being dangerous. You're too used to North American culture where they're very anal about safety. In Africa, that's a risk they're willing to take. It's just the way of life there. If you don't like it, then you can refrain from doing that with YOUR kids. Otherwise, don't complain. ;p

Oke, fair enough...knives are dangerous.
Have you ever seen or heard a girl getting hurt?
Knife throwing in the west is just as dangerous.
but we accept it as entertainment.
I can understand your beef with the knives, but I would rather cry foul when it's something like female circumsision.
This to me is not a big deal because there's obviously lots of training involved.
I do understand you..respect. :)

As a matter of fact I have seen a little falling from the arm of the so called professional.
That where my worries came from.

We North Americans throw children in the air and sometimes they fall too. Cheerleading and Gymnastics are sports despite the risks.
