There is nothing 'surprising' about Anneliese Rothenberger's virtue; the attempt to condescend to such a great singer is pathetic to say the least. Rothenberger was one of the last real singers, not only on German television but, before that, sought-after in every light/coloratura Mozart and Strauss role, and in other parts ranging from Hanna Glawari to Lulu.
Yes indeed! Loving A.R. as a performer and a person is no basis for guilt or surprise. She also always radiated beauty and charm for ANY age. She was foremost among marvelous German performers opening a magic world to a US soldier who loved living in it ever since. Küß' die Hand, gnädigste aller Frauen!
Thanks for posting this! Anneliese Rothenberger's voice is superb, and it's not often we get to hear Mario Del Monaco singing excerpts from Traviata, since he was known more for his dramatic roles, like Otello and Canio in Pagliacci.
let us be fair, del monaco was older here singing a more lyric opera, really not his fach at all. He was the greatest Dramatic tenor in our time and he had a great big voice, especially for Otello.
Rothenberger is a guilty pleasure. I lived in Germany in the 1970s and she was all over TV. I used to see her and Hermann Prey so much I thought they were married. For a middle-aged woman, she was quite comely. Her voice was surprisingly good, too.

Grazie MARIO!

Too bad, they didn't sing live. But then, they never did in German television...

Wonderful to see these two in her own show. When I as a young buy we always watch her shows and learnt much about the repertoire. xxx

I've often wondered how some of the people performing next to him survived the opera with their hearing intact!

Bravo!
