Viewers are estimating it short based on the view thru a video camer? Not a good idea kids. Time of flight of the bullet doesn't lie folks. That deer was humanely harvested at or near 1000 yards. Well done gentlemen and I really enjoyed the commentary because I too am married with a gun habit.
@14goldmedals Thanks for your comments. You are very observant. We plan on doing another video shootng gongs. It will take 3 cameras/ Also plan to show grid cords on a GPS for target and each firing position. Hopefully that will satisfy the sceptics. Thanks again.
1,022 yards is a little over 10 football fields, that doesn't look anywhere near that distance. Run a single football field, look at the other side, Even at one football field, looking at someone from across a football field can look quite a long way away.
@Albrtd3 aaaah... not to be rude, but you do know that it was filmed through a 18 power rifle scope with camera that has a zoom lense,(and I have no idea what power it was set at), both of which, by thier very nature, bring the target to appear closer than it actually is. For more info, locate and read US ARMY FM23-10 version 1995 or newer, chapter 3, pages 3-1 through 3-17. Have fun, keep shooting, keep learning. It is a life long process.
@delmont223 You're not rude at all. Naturally, the scope will make things seem zoomed in but at 0:57 seconds, as your zooming out, and I can see the farm window to you, it does not look like 1000 yards. Do you have a rangefinder?
@delmont223 It really doesn't look like 1000 yards from where your standing next to the deer. I shot @ 600 this weekend and it looked to be about that distance.
@1LonePuma Dear Sir: check you math. At time frame of 00:25 to 00:30, you will see the 1000 yard circle frozen in place to show that the deer was smaller than that circle. The value of the circle is 1.8 MOA. IF that deer would have been a full grown male it would be at or about 18” across he briscit. Divide know size by MOA and it equals range in 100s of yards. 18/1.8=10 = 10 hundred yds = 1000 yds. Time the shot out to impact. It should be about 1.3 sec. And it is. Also ....
@1LonePuma Also … this deer was standing by a big doe earlier. So we knew this deer to be a yearling and therefore about 13” and it measured about 1.25 in the MOA scale. The MOA scale is to the right just out of the camera angle. Do the math. The scope is 18X and I don't know what mag the camera lens was on. You can get a much better picture looking the actual scope. If you get a chance, try one and you will see what I mean. Thanks for watching.
The longest one shot deer I have taken, w/various calibers are: 223rem =250yds., 308 win= 500 yds., 303 brit= 120 yds., 30-06=60 yds., 243 win= 200 yds. and have put down dozens of deer that have been hit by cars with 38spec., 45acp, 9m para and most with a 40 s&w. All pistol shots were between 6 inches to 2 yds. (it's part of my job). Your 7x57 is a fine deer cartridge and if you want to get into long range, your 300WSM is execellent. Practice alot, say 500 or more rds. have fun / stay safe
Well done video and explanation , I never gave shepherd scopes much thought. I am more of a KISS sort of guy, then again I have not problem with what you guys are doing. My guess that venison was pretty fine eating. I have a 300 WSM, I don't hunt with it much, My last deer I shot was 30 yard out with a 7 x 57 and a 140 gr Nosler Partition. Thought I had to much gun at the time.
@rayd408 . You are correct. the fartherst I have ever engaged a target was in the vincinty of 1800 yards but that was with a M2 mounted on an APC. Took 3 or 4 short burst to eventually hit it. The tracers had quite the arc. At that distance it is strictly a plunging fire event. It was fun. Glad the USMC was paying for the ammo!
Great Video! Much more precise to dial your circles for the wind on that deer though, holding off out in no man's land is sketchy. This is the best and most reliable scope I've ever owned, I've learned it's functions inside and out and it is amazing. Using my .300 Ultra with 210VLD's at 3,190fps and going off of drop charts that go along with the circles, I've taken out milk jugs to 1,600 yards. These scopes work if you take the time to learn how to use them!
@childaking1 thanks for watching the video. I am a Deputy Sheriff and work part time for Shepherd. If there is anything I can help you with, please ask. And you are right, they are versitile scopes. Try this, after you know the range of a deer (or anything else) measuer the rack with the MOA marks. then multiply the range (in 100s of yds) x MOA and that tells you the size of the rack. IE. 3oo yd x 6 moa measured rack is 3x6= 18. That rack is 18 inches wide. Gotta go to work, thanks again.
I sent a Shepherd to a friend of mines son w/the 9th ID. He emailed pix of his AO and his M14. I sent him a better mount and ringsand painted it all to fit etc. I wish I had one back in 70 instead of the plain weaver K4. Anyway I'd like to hear from you and your exp. with the scope. Its a subject matter best for personal email, not this place. Semper FI
We used a Shepherd in Iraq (it fits a man's shoulders just as well as it brackets a deer's chest) and it was lot faster getting on target with it than using a traditional tactical style scope.
Very NICE! I was looking at getting a Shepherd scope but cheaped out with a nikon coyote special. Not a bad scope but it makes me still want a shep. I can't justify that expense just yet. At least not for coyotes.
@webfulcrum The scope's veiw is round so you see alot more than the rectangle view of the camera. There are MOA marks along the top and right side. Jerry "held off" 10 MOA = (2 body widths) by first looking at exactly what 10 MOA looked like in ref to the MOA marks. But if you wanted to adjust the sight it is easy to do and you can confirm the adjustment because you can see the movement against the MOA scale. Thanks for looking atour video! Mark
We have finaly received a post from the anit hunting crowd. To those people I say that I respect your opinion but will delete that type of comment. The debate over hunt or not to hunt is better argued in another format. But thanks for your interest.
Great job on the video, will post it up on my forums. It was most informative and entertaining. We should get together and work on a video or two. Again, Nice video Sir......
I would say this is around 400-500 yards,

1022 yrds?!
Come on, that's like 400 yards. Check your distance again please.
To get an Idea of how far 800 or 1000 yards looks like, check other videos on YouTube. Let's be honest boys.

@delmont223 Funny, I just timed it and was going to reply.. But you did the same thing. I estimated 1.3s, too.

@rayd408 I've never seen a shot at that distance but I could imagine the difficulty curve gets pretty steep once the bullet becomes subsonic.

The visibility on that scope seems pretty solid, particularly in light of the Jerry rigged camera setup (probably lost some light there).
Is the scope's windage adjustment fairly straightforward? or did you go with Kentucky windage?
