Hey Don, in the UK, I think a lot more people buy rolling tobacco (instead of cigarette packs) compared to the US (its a lot cheaper!) -- I personally prefer Benson and Hedges Gold Blend (I smoke 1 or 2 a day), which in my opinion still tastes better than any cigarette I've tried. Despite this tax hike on rolling tobacco in the US, it is still 25-30% more expensive in the UK!

Do you know what i find most amusing lately about the government? The FDA wants to regulate/ban e-cigarettes as "drug delivery devices". Never mind that already over 1 million former cigarette smokers use these now instead of inhaling burning, cancerous materials whereas e-cigs only contain nicotine which has never been proven to cause cancer on its own. Perhaps the FDA should ban teenagers next, after all, a good number are "drug delivery devices".
You would be wrong about pipe tobacco necessarily being moister or thicker. You have not had flake style, brick style, or British style tobacco. A lot of Indonesian pipe blends are also not as moist or thick.
I also want to mention as well that a regressive tax such as has happened to RYO, cigarettes, and other such in the past has always led to the collection of less tax revenue than expected, yet they never learn.

I'm being told that some new legislation is coming down that's going to raise the tax on Pipe tobacco soon. I JUST went to rolling my own to save money. I was spending about 50 bucks a carton before and went from that to spending about 9 bucks a carton! I'd like to buy up some and store it...maybe a few months worth. Does anyone know if this is possible? I know it would have to be airtight containers but how long could I make it last? Thanks!
@mandimayes That doesn't surprise me, I'm paying $50 a carton myself. I haven't tried rolling my own as yet, and I don't know how much you could buy at one time or how long it would keep. Maybe someone out there knows.

should keep in mind a distinction...the people who HATE these pipe and "bulk" tobacco sellers.... are the real "big" tobacco companies like phillip morriss... the Packaged Cig makers actually pushed for this huge tax hike on bulk tobaccoo...in the hopes that it would kill the competition and drive smokers back to their chemical additive / nicotine boosted products.... all in partnership with anti-smoking advocates... go figure.
the only real difference there has ever been with pipe and cig tobaccoo is the cut, and the varying degree of flavorings added. Some Heavy with flavoring and some with none... case in point Prince Albert Tobacco wich has been billed as "Pipe AND Ciggarette Tobacoo" since the 1900's.
The "pipe tobaccos" sold for roll your own are different than most traditional pipe tobaccos. They're just cut a little coarser than cigarette tobaccos and have the same flavor. They work fine in my Top-O-Matic T2. When working with the largest cuts or it's a little dry, you may have to try to pack the chamber a little more densly than usual to get a tight smoke. I'm usually left with smaller and smaller cuts as I work from a pile, so I pack less densly as I go to prevent tight smokes.
I've tried "The Good Stuff Light" pipe tobacco. Wasn't bad. Reminds me of cheap smokes I was buying like "Liggett Select Lights" or "Native Lights". Not the best flavor, but reasonably smooth and not harsh on the throat over time. You can get this online for $10.00 a carton shipped with tubes.
I recently tried "Criss-Cross Smooth" pipe tobacco and I think it's delicious. Better than the best cheap smokes and compares well to name brands IMHO. A little more $, but still less than $15 carton.
I suppose you could, but I think pipe tobacco would be stronger than regular rolling tobacco. I don't think you'd be doing something wrong and you're welcome.

My brother met and married a gal from Germany when he was stationed over there in the mid 1960's (he is 12 years older than I). While he served in Nam, he sent her to the States to live with us. She was 19 and I was 9 at the time. She secretly taught me how to smoke, complete with my own cigarette case. Oh, I mastered inhaling it and everything. Then, my parents found the cigarette case, complete with cigarettes in it under my pillow. End of story: I never smoked again (LOL)!

Also, you *can* smoke pipe tobacco in a cig, but it's HELL of a lot stronger, and its a little harder to keep lit.
