Star Trek was always known for taking on the issues of the day in a 23rd century setting. That was what made the series and some of the movies work.

Yes I agree with you for the most part. I do think this ship design is, or would have been, a better choice than the "beefed-up nacelles" version from the movie. But I think XI deserves its place in the Trekiverse. It's not meant to continue the saga, but re-boot it and inject some much-needed pizazz into the ailing franchise. Star Trek got tired, as did Doctor Who. Now Who is bigger and better than ever... and I think Abrams saved Star Trek for the long-term with a new timeline.
Although my favourite starfleet ship would be either the Promethius or the Intrepid where looks are concerned, the Constitution has a classic feel about it which most certainly wasn't lost in this movie. This movie was a huge gamble on the part of its makers, however it appears to have been successful. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie.
phasers don't propagate at lightppeed. They are exotic particle-beam homogenations. See "Datalore," TNG, for a close-up of the process. They are more like more coherent plasma bursts.

This is a fact that has been stated time and time again throughout Star Trek (and the TNG tech manual endorsed and written by Gene Roddenberry and others) that the plasma reaches the pre-fire chamber, and is then projected from the emitter crystal @ C (the speed of light).

@olbyr it's different times. tos connei would turn off too many people from wanting to watch the movie. the new movie neede to distance it's self from the "star trek is for nerds" image the series has carried for 40+ years. the new one COULD use smaller, sleeker nacelles though. other wise it's very good design.

This new movie should be great! The original Kirk, William Shatner is interviewed in the new documentary Transcendent Man, his interview is even quoted in the trailer. The trailer is on youtube, just type in "transcendent man trailer". Great man, great mind.
The new movie Enterprise, as envisioned by Abrams is absolutely beautiful, dont get me wrong, but when I first saw this footage, about a year ago, I got very excited. THIS is what the new movie ship should be like. A pity it wasnt picked up. Even tho this was never commissioned in a series or movie, I still consider this to be a ship most deserving of the name "USS Enterprise"

The sound waves need molecules to vibrate to make us hear the sound. A prime example is the air we breathe, it has molecules to make the sounds travel. Space has no air therefore no molecules for the soundwaves to vibrate.
A new and modern look for the Enterprise (for this generation), is good thing. I mean, if the one and original 1701 look was the best, then Enterprise A through E and J would look exactly the same.
Besides the look, the phaser sound effect is horrible, and what's worse is that its in pulses. *shudders*
I have to say though this is a great version of the enterprise. They did a great job of adding more detail to it I for one hope this new movie kicks ass.
I think putting Abrams in charge of it was a smart move, because this looks amazing. What they need to do is combne the vigor and style of the original characters and dice it up with modern effects. What the did for effects in the original series was the est they had in the 60's and 70s. why not upgrade? It worked for Badman..? I'm giving it a shot. Besides Quinto as Spock is just gravy...

Actally if you pause the trailer right when it comes to the nacelles it looks very similar. The tralier one has the humps right at the the top of the bussard collectors as does this one in this vid. In this vid you see two disks(one on top of the other) moving in the collectors, one moving in the oppsite direction of the other. Where in the trailer one you can see the samething(two disk moving in the same way) Also Koerner worked on Star Trek Enterprise and the Enterprise in this vid is in....

I like the look of the ship, the phaser fire seems a little bit too "warcrafty" for my liking and they should lose the "rushing through the air" sound... especially since space has none. Just a nice deep subwoofer workout hum should suffice. There is my two cents worth. Now here is my dollar bill... IS THIS REAL? No offence but it looks like some crazed fan job. It looks too much like the work for the NX-01 in Enterprise, almost the same 3D modelling technique. shame :(

The sound waves need molecules to vibrate to make us hear the sound. A prime example is the air we breathe, it has molecules to make the sounds travel. Space has no air therefore no molecules for the soundwaves to vibrate.

A new and modern look for the Enterprise (for this generation), is good thing. I mean, if the one and original 1701 look was the best, then Enterprise A through E and J would look exactly the same.
Besides the look, the phaser sound effect is horrible, and what's worse is that its in pulses. *shudders*

I have to say though this is a great version of the enterprise. They did a great job of adding more detail to it I for one hope this new movie kicks ass.

I think putting Abrams in charge of it was a smart move, because this looks amazing. What they need to do is combne the vigor and style of the original characters and dice it up with modern effects. What the did for effects in the original series was the est they had in the 60's and 70s. why not upgrade? It worked for Badman..? I'm giving it a shot. Besides Quinto as Spock is just gravy...

After seeing Abram's Enterprise for the new film, I so wish to god this could have been this enterprise. Abram's certainly dissappointed me. Why mess with something that is so established in our pop culture. I going to save my 12 bucks. Reboot or not, the enterprise in the new movie blows. Thats my Two Cents

Lads, its all well and good being an uber nerd, but for gods sake.. NONE OF THIS IS REAL!!! its a film, fictional... so take it for what it is, sit back and enjoy.. dont think about it too hard, cos by the early looks of things, this is gonna be a good film.. so who cares if phasers make noise, or if kirk was weapons officer on a different ship first, fact is.. this is a new movie.. so lets, sit back, and wait on it to be released, then judge!!

If the Enterprise is being constructed, shouldn't Chris Pike be the first captin (or Robert April for that matter?). When Pike was commanding the Enterprise Kirk was a weapons officer on the Farraghut.
I just hope the new movie address this issue.

well at the same time, what do u know about PHASER tech, it may have some form of energy that disperses through space, reverberating in such a manner off the hull of the sip you are in to make that sound. Enjoy the concept, not the details, any way, whay would this tick you off about Star Trek? What pisses me off is the language paradox(s) and the FAILED attempt in Voyager at the Universal Translator (Why does it translate everything but Klingnon, idk?).

NOT the new Enterprise. Dish and nacelles don't match the teaser; this is Gabe Koerner's personal design. How many times, and for how long, has this been pawned off as "the new Enterprise?" How many more times will this be sloughed as the new Big-E before the real one is revealed?
Twenty bucks says that when Abrams DOES reveal the prequel Enterprise, someone will still be trying to convince cyberspace this is the new E and Abrams' is the fake.

Actally if you pause the trailer right when it comes to the nacelles it looks very similar. The tralier one has the humps right at the the top of the bussard collectors as does this one in this vid. In this vid you see two disks(one on top of the other) moving in the collectors, one moving in the oppsite direction of the other. Where in the trailer one you can see the samething(two disk moving in the same way) Also Koerner worked on Star Trek Enterprise and the Enterprise in this vid is in....

Look I'm not trying to say that this is the new E. I hope its not. I think its ugle. What I was wondering is it possible that Koerner might be disigning the new E and thats why there are a few thing that are similar?( oh also hes been in the fan film Star Trek: Hidden Frontier) The last thing I can find him listed as doing is Battlestar Galactica, but there pretty much done as far as filming goes.

I like the look of the ship, the phaser fire seems a little bit too "warcrafty" for my liking and they should lose the "rushing through the air" sound... especially since space has none. Just a nice deep subwoofer workout hum should suffice. There is my two cents worth. Now here is my dollar bill... IS THIS REAL? No offence but it looks like some crazed fan job. It looks too much like the work for the NX-01 in Enterprise, almost the same 3D modelling technique. shame :(
