I guess I buy only music from people who don't care making big money out of their sales. There isn't a single record I'd like to have which is not being pressed on vinyl. Different music I guess.
BTW Richie has always been on the cutting edge of technology, production & developments, why should it be any different when it comes to the biz? It really does seem inevitable that DJs are going to go with the digital flow. I just got Traktor & a controller. Something that would have been UNTHINKABLE up until recently for me as a major vinyl stalwart. Carrying around wax loses its allure when the distances are far & I'm getting too old to haul it. Laptop is the way. This is the future IMO.
Controversial statements sure to rile some people up but having been in the game, pressing and selling DIY I can surely see where he is coming from. Vinyl is cool stuff but its expensive to manufacture & ship. Plus as a label you have to deal with collecting unpaid bills & people returning discs years later expecting full credit. With digital a sale is a sale - no returns, plus no shipping, no storage, no pressing costs. More and more DJs will be going 'digital' . I do love vinyl tho'.
Some people don't do it for the money Richie but for their love in music. And if you want more profit better release some quality stuff rather than a high amount of crap digitally..
@appie09 exactly!!! it's so easy to release something these days, that lot of crap is out every day.. lots!! i listen like one good song every 100 songs. it's actually sad. i love electronic music, but sometimes i just feel really dessapointed, even good producers forget are forgetting what inspired them at first.
I bought vinyl for 10 years. '98-'08. I used to walk around Dublin visiting HMV or Abbey Discs. Bought 400 records at about 8 euro a pop. I stopped when I bought a pacemaker and realised I could get 80 mp3 tunes for every 1 piece of vinyl. 80 times the value isn't even a choice. Plus I can play a party without half a ton of gear. HMV has no vinyl and Abbey Discs is closed. Is that my fault? They never had the tunes I wanted so I got them on the internet. I feel sad that they are gone though. :(
word to the mother-fucker. Anyone who grew up with vinyl, collected vinyl seriously, got stung by audiophile smoke and mirrors, but now understands the scientific basis for the inferiority of audio reproduction via vinyl, relative to digital media, gets what he is saying, everyone else must must be too young, dumb, or simply not professional enough to appreciate the reality of what he is saying. Having said that MP3s suck, we need to move to lossless compression @ 24/96 as standard.
Vinyls are a pain in the ass, that's why are the best. Much more effort to realease a record means the producer put a lot of his/her spirit for the REAL LOVE for electronic music, not for the money. I really support digital media, of course. However, I demand to all people who loves vinyls, not to let'em die. I beg you on my knees. RESPECT to our roots.
@cgartarg But Vinyl could also keep a lot of talented musicians and records from ever being put out simply because it requires way to much, compared to if that musician would just start up a label releasing it digitaly. Now, I'm in favour of the physical medium and collect both vinyl and cd simply because I enjoy the feel of it, but I don't see a reason to just go "Vinyl is a quality filter".

vinyl is a pain though ... he's right about that one .... you got to carry all those records around !!! it can get realy heavy ! loads of heavy bags and cases full of vinyl ... or a simple laptop ! wich one is easier !?? But vinyl still rules !!! it shows true DJ-skills and art !!!
techno is about the future... forward thinking, progression.
Vinyl dates back to the early 20th century. Not very progressive. Yet through innovation we've managed to invent brilliant ways to utilize the benefits of vinyl (cueing, pitch/speed control) to our advantage with final scratch, serato sl, traktor skratch, etc. and simultaneously ditch the pitfalls of vinyl (weight, space, cost).
To anyone saying that using a computer isn't "real techno". You're an idiot. Really! Think about it!
As the owner of a vinyl label, I completely agree. Vinyl IS a pain in the ass. And anyone who hasn't attempted to release records should probably STFU with all the shouts of "sellout" and all that.
mp3 are the future. vinyl is yesterday. for a dj is mp3 better to play a set, with vinyl you can´t do so much as with mp3. you have no idea what you say.
@MCVixenVee omfg dude he just told us what his oppinion is about vinyl after more exp than you or me or prettey much everyone that has commented so far here. And then again he had been using vinyl himself until 2002.And it is fact what he said..2011 every big dj out there that still uses vinyl uses software like NI:traktor scratch so basicaly it s digital djing.Sounds more like you hate Richie Hawtin and NI...oh and by the way he was probably talking about his label called MINUS not about NI..
Respond to this video... overrated pseudo know it all, low self steam sun of a gun, vinyl is what made you, you can`t go around spreading this bullshit, people listen to you!!!
Richie Hawtin is receiving mad endorsements from companies like Native Instruments for helping push vinyl off the market. Itll be better for his label in the long run also.
MP3's have lowered the standard of quality world wide for audio. Yes even at 320
And I didn't say runined the industry, just lowered the standard of quality, 2 huge difference's I choose quality of quantity, it's really that simple.
I'm sure most people know what mp3.s are. Lots and lots of slices of audio cut out then compressed. So what about the cut out peices, you don't think you miss anything...
The real question is this...
What is more important to you, saving space on your hard drive using mp3's, (even 320kbs)
or
Wav's that takes up a little more space without the slices of missing audio.
With the cost of cheep hard drives, why would you ever think of using mp3's
@cornerking75 " With the cost of cheep hard drives, why would you ever think of using mp3's "
~> With the cost of 320k mp3's (almost free by now, you know what i mean), why would you spend so much money for wav's when you can't even afford a cdj ? Sorry, i live in a world where we judge a dj on what he plays, how he plays, and how he can make you dream, not the bitrate of his set. Jesus, nerds....
What does a cdj have to do with the format your using???Nothing. CDJ is a brand name,(and I have 2 CDJ 1000;s and 3 technics 1200's so I can afford them thanks, and a DJM 800 : )) so, I know the differnce between an MP3 and Wav and analog, (Vynal).
Yes I am a nerd, went to school for audio engineering!
@cornerking75 sorry, you got me wrong. I talked about cdj's as a comparison because, for many young dj's, it's something they often can't afford soon. Same for wav's. It's easier to just grab mp3's off the blogs & p2p. I understand that quality is important, but i wanted to defend some people.
"With the cost of 320k mp3's (almost free by now, you know what i mean), why would you spend so much money for wav's"
Silly question, of coarse the WAVs cost more, because it's better. Don't you want the best, I do, maybe that;'s the nerd in me,lol.
I am talking about overall sound quality. Not how the dj mixes his tracks. You judge a dj on what he plays you said, you should care about bitrate, makes the dreamy sound better, what ever that is.
fuck that im a new dj i got the ns7 by numark so digital is the future . old school sucks .... i dont give a fuck about all u old school people . like the dinosaur , u had ur time ..lol.
fair play for richie to keep on selling vinyl to people who ain't bit the the bullet yet and gust to move forward.vinyl has got more character due to inperfections, evolution's about perfection.....personally i quite like vinyl,on a good sound system though.
Where does he mention mp3? I dont think any big DJs like Hawtin would dream of using mp3. Maybe his label releases mp3s, but you're kidding yourself if you think even high quality mp3 even comes close to any lossless format.
yeah it dose let u use wav but a good qaulity 6 min wav track is about 200 mb so only 10 tracks would take up a gig of hark disk space so mp3 is much more eficient as its only about 28mb at 320kbs and anyway you would only be able to notice the difference between a high quality wav track and a 320kbs mp3 on only the very best of sound systems and even then the diiference would be minimal
I've seen a few of his DJ-twitter messages when he plays a track, a few of them still have the original file name, and they have MP3 in the file name.. Just an example
promo_7_23_mp3_ambivalant_-_front_stab
thats not the actual one, but a few have looked like that
you are not the smartes person on earth with that comment. Of course he uses mp3, 99,999% of the clubbers dont hear difference and I bet your ass he doesnt even hear the difference himself.
Almost ALL big DJs use mp3 these days or lossless digital format.
The bad sound quality is not caused by the mp3 format. It's caused by bad mastering.
The downside is digital music is that virtually everybody can release it at very low cost. That means there are fewer barriers to release music and as a result much more music is being released these days. Including a lot of junk; both in a creative way and a technical way
You're right, mp3 is not the cause of the majority bad sound.
Most of the time some producers do mastering themself without any knowledges about it.
But in some cases, mp3 supress some high frequencies (even in 320kbps) and it could be heard easily in many kind of monitors (even cheapers). That's why i prefer .wav format or .flac.
Now we could have big storage space so why not prefer the better sound quality ?
Formats have more to do with profit and loss for labels than sound quality. All formats are there to provide a delivery to the consumer, but sure - go for the highest quality you can find. Besides that, remember Betamax vs VHS? Betamax was visually superior...
Vinyl represents true artistic integrity as DJ.

mp3 are the future. vinyl is yesterday. for a dj is mp3 better to play a set, with vinyl you can´t do so much as with mp3. you have no idea what you say.

Richie Hawtin is receiving mad endorsements from companies like Native Instruments for helping push vinyl off the market. Itll be better for his label in the long run also.

I stand by this!
MP3's have lowered the standard of quality world wide for audio. Yes even at 320
And I didn't say runined the industry, just lowered the standard of quality, 2 huge difference's I choose quality of quantity, it's really that simple.
cornerking75 2 years ago 15
I'm sure most people know what mp3.s are. Lots and lots of slices of audio cut out then compressed. So what about the cut out peices, you don't think you miss anything...
The real question is this...
What is more important to you, saving space on your hard drive using mp3's, (even 320kbs)
or
Wav's that takes up a little more space without the slices of missing audio.
With the cost of cheep hard drives, why would you ever think of using mp3's
cornerking75 2 years ago 14
@cornerking75 " With the cost of cheep hard drives, why would you ever think of using mp3's "
~> With the cost of 320k mp3's (almost free by now, you know what i mean), why would you spend so much money for wav's when you can't even afford a cdj ? Sorry, i live in a world where we judge a dj on what he plays, how he plays, and how he can make you dream, not the bitrate of his set. Jesus, nerds....
Viedenuit 1 year ago
What does a cdj have to do with the format your using???Nothing. CDJ is a brand name,(and I have 2 CDJ 1000;s and 3 technics 1200's so I can afford them thanks, and a DJM 800 : )) so, I know the differnce between an MP3 and Wav and analog, (Vynal).
Yes I am a nerd, went to school for audio engineering!
cornerking75 1 year ago
@cornerking75 sorry, you got me wrong. I talked about cdj's as a comparison because, for many young dj's, it's something they often can't afford soon. Same for wav's. It's easier to just grab mp3's off the blogs & p2p. I understand that quality is important, but i wanted to defend some people.
Viedenuit 1 year ago
"With the cost of 320k mp3's (almost free by now, you know what i mean), why would you spend so much money for wav's"
Silly question, of coarse the WAVs cost more, because it's better. Don't you want the best, I do, maybe that;'s the nerd in me,lol.
I am talking about overall sound quality. Not how the dj mixes his tracks. You judge a dj on what he plays you said, you should care about bitrate, makes the dreamy sound better, what ever that is.

I'm just playing techno with is mostly based on vinyl printed between 90 and 2002. Made out of Detroit.
As I'm spining since the age of 15 which is now 7 years to the date then you might now just go back home and learn.

Where does he mention mp3? I dont think any big DJs like Hawtin would dream of using mp3. Maybe his label releases mp3s, but you're kidding yourself if you think even high quality mp3 even comes close to any lossless format.
rail0r 2 years ago
richie hawtin uses traktor...so he does use mp3
michaelayon 2 years ago 7
Doesn't traktor let you use wav? I'm sure has his hands on better quality than mp3 :)
rail0r 2 years ago 5
yeah it dose let u use wav but a good qaulity 6 min wav track is about 200 mb so only 10 tracks would take up a gig of hark disk space so mp3 is much more eficient as its only about 28mb at 320kbs and anyway you would only be able to notice the difference between a high quality wav track and a 320kbs mp3 on only the very best of sound systems and even then the diiference would be minimal
wolfy5000 2 years ago
I've seen a few of his DJ-twitter messages when he plays a track, a few of them still have the original file name, and they have MP3 in the file name.. Just an example
promo_7_23_mp3_ambivalant_-_front_stab
thats not the actual one, but a few have looked like that
FLefty18 2 years ago
you are not the smartes person on earth with that comment. Of course he uses mp3, 99,999% of the clubbers dont hear difference and I bet your ass he doesnt even hear the difference himself.
Almost ALL big DJs use mp3 these days or lossless digital format.
So put your stupidness on another site.
djmushi 2 years ago 7
You say OR lossless formats, so what's the problem?
Of course they can hear it... If you own a label, know the producers, why would you use an mp3 version?
rail0r 2 years ago
we make vinyl now on MELEON MUSiC and BACKDOOR BEAUTY...... for those who love the black gold,...hahaha
danjelesperanza 2 years ago
mp3 are for beginners and people that are content with bad quality.
Vinyl are for conneseurs and people that love music and really good quality.
Simple as that, if you sometime happen to get a listen to a recordplayer in the $10 000 range, you'l NEVER EVER want to play a mp3 ever again.

mp3 helps the small labels
stops the music industry from the last 10-15 years of stagnation
TurKdiRty 2 years ago
Yes, the Digital way is maybe the solution but why is anybody wants MP3 instead of better digital format ???
Ok most of the time there's no difference between MPS 320 kbps and a wav, even with good monitors.
Housetraxx 2 years ago
But sometimes, mp3 makes a metalic sound in the high frequencies of some tracks.
And just for this reason, mp3 is not a good solution.
And now we can have hard drive with many place to store wav or flac so please forget about mp3.
Housetraxx 2 years ago
The bad sound quality is not caused by the mp3 format. It's caused by bad mastering.
The downside is digital music is that virtually everybody can release it at very low cost. That means there are fewer barriers to release music and as a result much more music is being released these days. Including a lot of junk; both in a creative way and a technical way
mctmct1987 2 years ago
You're right, mp3 is not the cause of the majority bad sound.
Most of the time some producers do mastering themself without any knowledges about it.
But in some cases, mp3 supress some high frequencies (even in 320kbps) and it could be heard easily in many kind of monitors (even cheapers). That's why i prefer .wav format or .flac.
Now we could have big storage space so why not prefer the better sound quality ?
Housetraxx 2 years ago
Formats have more to do with profit and loss for labels than sound quality. All formats are there to provide a delivery to the consumer, but sure - go for the highest quality you can find. Besides that, remember Betamax vs VHS? Betamax was visually superior...

i said: VINYL KILLS THE MP3 INDUSTRY!!!!!!!
for shure vinyl sounds better!!!
greetz
dennishanjohr 2 years ago
Vinyl doesn't kill the mp3 industry in any way.
They are not real substitutes anymore, mainly because of the cost aspect.
mctmct1987 2 years ago
vinil kills the mp 3 industry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
dennishanjohr 2 years ago
Vinyl sounds better.
If you want to go the digital way, try .wav or .flac but MP3 sucks.......is anybody lost their ears ???
Housetraxx 2 years ago 29
depends how you encode it
its possible to make mixes sound like vinyl
but fuck you if you think im gonna make something sharp and clear, then take it down a notch to what some think "sounds better" ;[
