Thank you for posting- this is so touching/smart. I would like to share with you a video interview 'Jules Feiffer: Confessions in Print' available via fora.tv/2009/08/05/Jules_Feiffer_Confessions_in_Print
Deitch is also known for a short run of MGM Tom and Jerry cartoons which are routinely disparaged compared to the earlier Hanna-Barbera and later Chuck Jones efforts. The interesting thing about the Deitch T&Js is that they don't list "made in the USA" on the credits because Deitch did his animation from behind the iron curtain. This cartoon, however, is of much higher quality than the T&Js.
I died laughing when I saw this at the drive in when I was abiut 9 years old...never seen a toon like it...it was ahead of its time...I'm a big fan of Gene Deitch's work. ...my parents hated it....they probably thought Mr. Feiffer was a communist conspirator or something to that effect.
Back in the day the Army had a phrase called "Snafu"...it was not uncommon for the military to screw something up, so the "Snafu" of the military drafting a 4 year old was one of the points of this cartoon. Another point was how blindly militaristic the brass was when initially faced with the crying 4-year old and refusing to acknowledge even the possibility that they made a mistake...until he started crying (perish forbid a soldier cries...remember what "Patton" did ?)
it's satire you schmuck, it's commenting on teenagers who were still basically kids being drafted into the army, and how if you're unfit for the army it's very hard to get out of it once you're in. Stop thinking literally

Call me a schmuck I'll call u dumb ass!!!!!!!!!! U should correct me without calling me names like that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know it's a satire dumbass!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't ever call me or anybody who doesn't know anything about satire Schmuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fieffer is a big talent. This Oscar-winning cartoon is brilliant because it is simple and TRUE. I know first hand. I had double pneumonia in basic, but wasn't admitted to a respiratory ward until my FOURTH visit to sick call. In the same company another trainee's pleas were ignored & he died during a speed march--a forgotten casualty of military stupidity whose name is NOT on the Viet Nam memorial wall in D.C. The military is like marriage: easy to get in, tough to get out.
Gene Deitch, 84, still lives in Prague with his wife, Zdenka. Gene and Jules (Pfeiffer) won an Oscar for this short film. Gene enjoys watching all Oscar nominations and voting in the Oscars every year. In addition to "Tom Terrific" on CAPTAIN KANGAROO (another Deitch creation) every morning, baby-boomers enjoyed many Deitch films (kiddie lit made into films) at school during their K-6th Grade years. Gene and Zdenka are still making annimated films in Prague.
Very cool! I do remmeber Tom Terrific from Captain Kangaroo. It was one of my favorite parts of the show. Thank you sharing this history of the cartoon. I also love Pffeifer also.
Can't say I haven't seen this anymore - I've owned a copy of the book that contains this story for many years. Very faithful to the original, except the part where the doctors were too busy drafting a famous ballplayer - it was a famous singer (Elvis reference) in the book. And Howie Morris! A great early sampling of much of his later Hanna-Barbera voice work here, too. His narration sounds a bit like Dustin Hoffman circa Midnight Cowboy or Little Big Man.
Rembrandt Films was founded by Bill Snyder as a distributor of foreign films for "art houses." He hired Gene Deitch away from Terrytoons and set him up with his own animation studio in Prague.
While at Terrytoons, Deitch hired Jules Feiffer to do a planned TV cartoon series called "Easy Winners." It was never produced.
Rembrandt Films also did some Tom & Jerry and Popeye cartoons to pay the bills.
I love that the narrator's reading like he's on a smoke break. Dude don't give a SHIT.

@starhand403 O.K. If you stop breathing you don't get enough oxygen and you begin to mutter incoherently. How long ago did you stop breathing?

Is this before or after Chuck Jones's cartoon about Bugs Bunny being drafted? If after, I think Jones meant it as a tribute.

Also, Deitch's son Kim gained fame as an "underground comix" artist in the '70s.

I love his work. I used to read my ex-husband's playboys, specifically Jules Feiffer's works. Loved his originality.

It's MUNRO. Jeez. Not "Munroe". Spelling it wrong like that means nobody searching for this video will be able to find it.
