you can mod the extended mags if ur good with a dremmel, all that needs to be removed is a little bit of metal and plastic on the rearward side of the mag, just do a side by side comparison and you'll see how much to remove
@kabarkilla I've been building up the courage to attempt to modify my magazines and I finally modified one the other day. It didn't look quite as nice as the CST mag but it seems to be functioning flawlessly.
the cheap remington 22lr ammo works great. been shooting that ammo for 5 years thru my 10/22. CCI match ammo gums it up and feed wronge, and releases the shell wronge. shot CCI and it cracked my stock when i shot
@4dailyrunner Thanks. Yeah, they're millet but I replaced them because I didn't like the look of the see-through and never used them for that. The new rings are in the second video I made of this gun.
@dahelmetrk Good vid, very informative, though I'm not sure if I'd have put myself in a position of needing modified magazines. If that's the only .22 you own, I guess it's ok, because you wont be sharing magazines. =)
Thanks, that's the one thing I don't like but I never used the big 25 round magazines anyway and I don't have any other 10/22s or a charger so its not too big of a deal.
lol, I really don't notice getting blasted in the face. My main problem is shooting .22 pistols, I tend to get more hot brass down my collar if I'm wearing a polo shirt.
Honestly, when I had the stock barrel on it I was a much less experienced shooter so its hard to compare but this one shoots about 1/2in at 50yds if I'm having a good day so I've been really happy with it.
@dahelmetrk ha well u could always try and compare i mean i have a 10 and 1/2 inch standard barrel that i threaded myself from the original barrel that came with it but iv been shooting for years and it works great iv never tried any other barrel i was thinking about modding my rifle like urs but i custom built my rifle myself
JD..I put a Boyds SS Evolution stock on my Ruger 10/22. I removed the screw studs on my Ruger stock and put them on my Boyds stock. However you do HAVE TO pre- drill the holes for the stud installation on the Boyds stock. ALSO put soap or a lubricant on the studs before trying to screw them in. Use a punch as a lever to screw them in. Now buy a Harris Bi-pod and mount it using the front stud as an attach point. Make sure the pilot hole is big enough to fit the screw. Start small then larger :)
Nice rifle. Ive got somewhat of the same setup, without the custom barrel but a bull barrel none the less. My question is how did you mount the bi pod on the stock? I want to attach a bi pod to my boyds stock but dont have a clue on how to do it. Some pointers would be great. Thanks.
Thanks. I bought a sling stud made by Uncle Mike's and had my dad install in for me. Its a little tedious to do but any gunsmith should be able to do it for you pretty quickly for cheap. If you do it yourself, the stud should come with instructions on how to drill for it but be warned, the laminate around the hole may split if from the twisting of the stud during installation. It happened to mine but its not noticeable and doesn't affect anything.
Thanks, I'm liking it even more now that I've got a Leopold scope rail and low rings to replace those ugly see-thru ones. I do my best to get guns that cater to my left-handedness. I've got a couple Savage left-handed bolt-action rifles and a left-handed Stag.
The more I think about it the more I realize it would probably never happen but it's a rumor I heard a long time ago that I never felt the need to challenge. I tend to err on the side of caution.
Thanks, I didn't like the scope rings that much either, it's just what I had at the time. I got rid of the rings, but a matte black Leopold scope base on it, matte black rings, and a Barska scope on it not too long ago. It looks much better now. I also replaced the entire trigger group, so it shoots better too.
Really neat mods! Sounds like it functions really well now, and looks good. This is probably my next weapon, that or an SKS. Just curious, where'd you purchase your Ruger at?
I've been hearing more and more that dry firing is okay, now that I've got my new trigger adjusted, I don't really have a need to dry fire. I hadn't heard that decocking trick before, I'll have to try it.
No I haven't. That was something I decided was outside the scope of my knowledge and wasn't as important as some of the other modifications I've made.
@dahelmetrk All done with the bedding video I promised. Installed my new whistle pig barrel and everything...Now I just have to go to the range a film me shooting it for the last part of the video!
looks great man i have one and made it all tactical with archangel but plan on gettin onther one and goin this way for target shootin but nice job man
The wood may be dyed similar to some of the chargers you can buy but my gun was a 10/22 when I got it 10 years ago and it still is. Chargers are pistols and therefore don't have butt stocks, that's the best way to tell the difference.
I'm not sure I fully understand what you are asking but if have a loaded magazine in the gun and you pull back on the bolt and release it, it will automatically slide forward to chamber a round. Is that what you were asking?
How functional is the mag release when in a shooting position on the rifle? Can you actuate the release with the hand on the grip while still holding the rifle and use the non-dominant hand to change mags? or is it more suited to use on a bench?
I can actuate the release with middle finger or my left hand (dominant hand) while still gripping the gun and switch mags with my right hand. Its easy and comfortable to do from any position I've tried.
Excellent question, I haven't tried yet. I've been hitting okay groups at 50 yds (1/2-3/4 inch) but I haven't had a chance to get back out and test it at 100. I still need to find the right ammo for it, I just haven't had time.
Thanks. I'm not real sure on the first question but right now I'm using it with a 2.5lb trigger and its working great, I'd assume it'd work with what you suggested. The special mags are required because a lever falls across the top of the mag to determine if a round is present and part of the back of the mag has to be removed to accommodate that lever. I hope that made sense.
From what I understand you can mod the mags yourself, you'll just need to cut a notch in the back of the mag (They have pictures on their website showing what the mag has to look like. I don't think they recommend modifying magazines that aren't ruger factory magazines but I'm not sure.
Hey thanks for the info! Could you give me that web site? I can understand why they would recommend only moding the factory mags they're more sturdy than the cheap plastic after market ones! I have both and the after market mags just don't fit as snug as the factory originals. The 30 rounds are nice out on the range though.
I love the distinctive look of Boyd's stocks. I especially like the way this particular one is reminiscent of the Dragunov. I was planning on going with a tactical configuration, though. I'm putting a Christie and Christie Super-Stock (pistol grip stock, forward pistol grip, and picitanny rails) with a Tasco red-dot scope on a weaver rail I'm replacing the scope mounts with. Basically the configuration is very similar to kickedintheballs2000's 10/22. What's your opinion on the tactical setup?
There's something about that Boyd's stock that made me buy it as soon as I saw it, and it's extremely comfortable. I think the tactical setup looks great and would be a lot of fun to shoot. Personally, I don't think it offers much in the line of tactical usage since its only a .22 but I still think that it looks nice and that shouldn't stop someone from doing it.
Nice job, was thinking of going with the evo, but decided on the boyds blaster, now just waiting for my ruger to arrive, ordered the 10 22 Target. I will mainly keep it stock, put an extended magazine release, Harris bipod, silencer and simmons scope. Great vid, nice gun but get rid of those pillows. (joke)
Thanks. the blaster looks nice, too bad its only for you weird right-handed people. Sounds like you're gonna build a nice gun. After you shoot it though, you may wish you'd put in a new trigger. Ruger triggers are terrible and I just replaced mine with a 2 3/4lb titanium trigger, big difference. I love those pillows : )
im currently building a 10/22 almost identical to yours wich might i add is beautiful. do u know if u need special mags with the volquatsen slide release? and y not change that scope ur probably already 6 or 7 hundred bucks deep into the gun already. i think she deserves it
Thanks. As far as I know, you only need special mags with the CST bolt stop. From what I can tell from volquartsen's website, you don't need special mags. As far as the scope is concerned, I had a decent one on it and it broke and I scavenged the tasco from a pellet rifle. It seems to work just fine though so I figure, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Some day I'll probably put a better scope on, when I'm not too cheap.
love the auto bolt stop feature, really makes sense on the 10/22, dont know why Ruger hasn't made it standard yet - too bad it needs special magazines to function.
I've done the "find the right ammo" game plenty and ive found standard velocity (1080)fps subsonic foicchi LRN ($45 for a 500pk) always gave me nice 1/2inch groupings at 100yrds
Thanks! I wish I could use after market magazines with the auto bolt stop but it's worth the sacrifice. I have a couple extra factory magazines I'm going to send off to be modified, unfortunately CST charges $10 per mag to modify them. Thanks for the heads up on the fiocchis. I've been considering trying them, I'll definitely give them a shot.
I could be wrong but I don't think .22lr can convert to .22 mag. It can convert to .17 mach 2 and .17hmr can convert to .22 magnum but I don't think .22lr can convert to .22 mag.
Nice looking setup. Like the Evo a lot, but I'm with the other guy. I'd ditch the see through mount for a PC extended base. Without open sights, you aren't losing anything there.
I haven't shot this gun much but I usually shoot it at 100yds. I may ocasionally shoot 50yds for fun if whoever I'm with is shooting there. I like the see thru sights but very rarely ever use them. They're on the gun now because I have nothing to replace them with and don't feel the need to get rid of them.
Thanks, that's something I realized not too long ago. I wondered why the price was substantially cheaper but I still like the look and quality of the barrel so it doesn't matter that much to me. I'll just have to read a little more carefully next time.
I've only gotten to shoot it twice since modifying it because the weather hasn't cooperated. In 20mph winds gusting to 35mph, it was hitting 3-4 inch groups at 100yds with Rem Thunderbolt. I intend to try Remington Target ammo in better conditions but I feel confident it'll do well.
you can mod the extended mags if ur good with a dremmel, all that needs to be removed is a little bit of metal and plastic on the rearward side of the mag, just do a side by side comparison and you'll see how much to remove

With the CST bolt stop, do you have to press in the release lever with a full mag or does it act like an auto bolt release?

I've only gotten to shoot it twice since modifying it because the weather hasn't cooperated. In 20mph winds gusting to 35mph, it was hitting 3-4 inch groups at 100yds with Rem Thunderbolt. I intend to try Remington Target ammo in better conditions but I feel confident it'll do well.

Great video man , damn you got that thing looking good.
Do I dare ask how much you got rolled into it so far.

I'm loving the Boyd, it's just the right size for me. So far, I've got about $450 in it not counting the scope and original gun.
