this song is beyond anything ive ever whitnessed. i would want this song playing as i ride through the battle field swinging my sword cutting bodies in half, i would charge through the fabric of space bellowing into the next dimension to grab a hold of the throat of the invisible demons that drive the evil forces reining of mankind. ride up into the sky through the clouds above the fire into the vast darkness of space where creation and destruction meet in the singularity of existance......
@AndroxineVortex He didn't take drugs to write songs, everything he ever wrote was either through anger or inspiration. He took drugs probably cause he loved the feeling of them or as a depressant, everyone who ever does drugs knows the feeling and they become dependent of it. Devy probably suffered depression after becoming sober, this is where I believe he felt like he couldn't write songs. But he wrote hundreds of songs later, he realized they're good, and he reentered music. :D
@GeneralTitanTitties Excellent post. Im not saying he did drugs to write songs but im pretty sure he was on stuff when he was in SYL and stuff and they were pretty heavy.
@AndroxineVortex Well if you get the chance to ever meet him ask him about his inspirations: he's told me and my friends about how he gets ideas from his cat, bike rides, eating food, and how his mind is pretty much an infinite void of pure chaos. xD
But yes, SYL was heavy as an unbendable girder. And he was on drugs, which is sad cause I like my favorite musician when he's not on drugs. ;D
Sobriety kicks ass, just listen to his DTP albums....it makes me NOT wanna do drugs and drink beer.
@Meriliniel I'd say check out "the new black" it's a lot like this album, city & alien are heavy as fuck and may take some getting used to going from this, but it really depends what youre already into!!
@sammmm87 SYL was devin's anger output, he was into drugs at the time. Dev quit drugs and became sober, but saddened by the realization he could only write songs when he took drugs, he quit the group, and SYL went their separate ways.
I think the reason he doesn't bring it back is cause he's afraid to have the same life of drug abuse when he was in SYL. To be honest, I think dev's solo work is better. It's like taking a nice stroll through the park and sniffing the flowers along the way.
@GeneralTitanTitties ......yea but thats what im saying. He's still making metal in one form or another, hes touring with a bunch of metal musicians and playing to metal fans. When I saw him play in holland a few months ago he said it was because he'd given up weed (he said his band still smoke) and his tastes had changed so he'd feel like a phony playing that stuff when his heart wasn't in it......but.....if hes still making that heavy shit (as heavy as anything syl did) whats the difference?
@sammmm87 LOL, like I said: SYL was his anger output. Dev now a days is calm and mellower, sober than shit, dev would have to be angry or violent in order to write stuff for SYL.
Honestly, IDK why he doesn't bring back SYL. I think the attention he has now with these solo projects is good enough for him.
@GeneralTitanTitties I feel like Poltergeist is, in a way, the final SYL song. If you look at it where it is in the DTP song cycle, closing Deconstruction (the chaotic, confused, revelatory album) and leading into Ghost (the moment of calm), it seems like Devin intentionally created the most SYL-esque song he could, just so he could have it in the song cycle and represent that moment of his life, completing the DTP story. Now, bring on Epicloud!
@sammmm87 if I remember correctly devin townsend signed SYL to Century Media with a five album contract. His five albums are up, and to continue he'd probably have to sign again with Century Media (since they probably own the SYL trademarks).
@AevumAnimus ...that is a good point,.....but it doesn't stop me wishing and hpoing, if he really wanted to he could bring it back.. I guess I'll just have to keep listen to my old albums and be thankfull they never lost it, sold out or went pop.
@sammmm87 The way I see it is with SYL he'd have to be what he isn't anymore all the time. With his solo work, he can write a brutal metal song, and still write other types and have it all in one band instead of having to split his attention.. He said his solo stuff is what he connects more with anyway. SYL was awesome, but Dev should stick to what he believes in and can channel more of himself into instead of just angry SYL.
@aero3132 good point mate, when you listen to the new black it was kinda going the way of his heavier solo stuff anyway. I did get a bit worried when addicted came out, it was so poppy with the synth stuff ( I liked it, it just wasnt my usual) I was super happy with this album being HEAVY, made me wish for the old SYL that caused me to turn gay for devin in the first place.
The long lost SYL song.

The ONLY TWO THINGS I can think of that could make this song more amazing... would be
1. Chuck Schuldiner doing guest vocals on this song if he were still alive
2. If everyone who contributed guest vocals on the album screamed STAND at the end along with Devin.

Imagine how chaotic this would be if he still did drugs. The world would end.
But I used to dislike this album until I forced myself to listen to it all the way through like 5 times and this song is epic!
