American and British English are completely distinct (collections of) dialects; it makes no sense to assume that Americans should be intimate with what is, in essence, a language other than their own. One could say, since so much media in Britain is imported from the US--and that Americans outnumber Brits 6-1, that the opposite should be true (it isn't, for the same reason; also there's no single American dialect any more than there is a British one).

@Taarable Regardless, an actor (yes, even a British one), should figure out if their character is from Minnesota or Wisconsin (not just "American" or "from the South," and be coached accordingly. NYC alone has dozens of distinct dialects. Where a British moviegoer might just hear "American," An American hears an accent that's all over the place. I'm sure this is true in Britain, too. To hear Christian Bale or Gerard Butler (yeah, I know, he's Scottish) try to sound "American" is cringe-worthy.

@Taarable My real point isn't that Americans are good at British accents, it's that you (I assume you're British) hear the bad ones, where an American ear wouldn't (unless it's Kevin Costner). Your ear isn't trained to hear how truly godawful many British actors are at American accents. Case in point, you didn't hear the slip-ups the lovely Alice Eve had in this movie; you just heard "Sounds American."

I, as an American, noticed several places where she went deep in her U's and sounded British.

The point i'm trying to get across is that i've HEARD that in general it's easier for an English person to do an American accent. I can definately hear that, however untrained my ears may be.

And yes, the media is carried about in an American-English manner, and one example of this was found in South Africa, where little boys were able to develop an American accent throughout their childhood simply by watching TV, yet still remaining fluent in Zulu or whatever native tongue they spoke. @Taarable It's unfair to generalize that English actors are just better at accents than American actors. Some actors are good at it, others aren't, regardless of nationality. The vampires you mentioned aren't relevant examples, since nobody in the US (or anywhere) actually talks like that. What I do find hilarious is when Hollywood uses British as a stand-in for ANY other language, or when actors (Christian Bale) affect a poor American accent even in interviews, so as not to CONFUSE people. (?!)

@Viconiuz in London there are a couple of different accents but her accent is close to how a lot of people sound but it sounds like it's been changed probably from living abroad, e.g. at 0:44 she says 'obviously' weirdly and at 2:48 she says 'well' weirdly. Her voice is a bit posh but a lot of people sound like that, London people who go to good schools/universities sound like that.
