it doesnt need sunlight to grow. All a seedling needs is water to sprout, food is taken from the starch in the seed.

After it grows leaves and the starch runs out, it needs light to convert food sources into energy.

Its not such a big mystery, we learned this in 1st grade science. He obviously inhaled the seed and maybe thought it was a bug or something. It wouldve died soon, it wouldnt have grown beyond a sproutling.
