And, by the way, best high C I've ever heard. Of course a high C, or any high note for that matter, is hardly the most important thing to comment on, but I just wanted to share this, it's really the most magnificent high C I've ever heard.
@viv3147 I think you mean head voice, which is not the same thing as falsetto. Chest voice and falsetto do not mix - that would be like trying to whisper and yell simultaneously. Also, I don't think it's possible for a man to sing a full voiced high C without using some head voice.
@Loganberrymusic You're quite correct, it's a biological impossibility to sing anything above the passagio (around E-F-F# - all tenors are different) without head voice. Anyone claiming to sing entirely from the chest or saying that it is possible is wrong.
i just discovered this man and know nothing about him other than that his history is frought with controversy. all i can say is, this performance is infused with emotion, the likes of which i have never heard from pavarotti, domingo, carerras, all of whom favor technical perfection.
This video is fantastic! I never heard Alagna sound so magnificent............absolutely beautiful performance! incredibly glorious voice.

I first met Alagna in !994 and thought we had a new star, sadly he frittered his talent away and became what I call a "ten year tenor". They sing all they can all over the world , often outside their repertoire and ruin their God given talent. Here he is extremely good.

Why is he shoiting? This should be a tender moment not "Di Quella Pira". The high C does not make up for a crude performance. This aria needs the touch abd artistry of Caruso/Gigli/Bjoerling or Pavarotti.
This is J.J. a singer from México, I "stole" some of your videos and made it my favorite. It´s a pleasure meeating a fanatic of opera. I hope you to accept my friendship invitation.
Really placed opened and sustained that top note Very very nice Is this sung in the original key or transposed to the B natural I'm too lazy to check.
thank you for this beautiful piece. it brought such joy to my heart. i saw him sing this in nyc when he made his american debut. i wept when he sang this aria. i will never forget it
Alagna has such a different color in his voice than say the late Pavoratti. I love the kind of darkness he has; I think it enables him for show more character in his voice. This may be my favorite performance of him (La Boheme). Marvelous!
Alagna is a marvelous tenor. A great voice, powerful emotions and a compelling stage presence. It's a joy to listen to him. He is sort of this generation's Bergonzi: overshadowed by many others, but gifted and enthralling at his best.
I am a fairly young guy but I think that Alagna is one of the best tenors ever heard! At La Scala, when he left the stage, he was not sang well, but in his best years had a voice in the world's most beautiful, perhaps the most beautiful! Has always the same color, the same stamp! Acute large and beautiful! An accurate passaggio, larynx always in position! A voice so beautiful that it moved! Great Alagna!
Okay, "Happy Actor" , by my count, Alagna has appeared as the lead tenor in (at least) 25 operas since he won the Pavoratti contest in '89, somehow he has managed to function even though you guys still keep writing him off - he just got great reviews for his "Trovatore" at Covent Garden in London & will do a "Carmen" there in October & in NYC in January at the Met. Maybe the voice is not the same, but he is still Alagna.
He tried to sing the wrong roles... simple. He sounds great here. Listed to Carreras in 1972 (absolutely beautiful singing), then 1988 (forced and dull sounding). Same issue.
The first I had heard of Alagna was when he left the stage at La Scala in the middle of a performance and I decided I didn't like him so I never listened to him. Well, I figured I might as well inform my dislike and listened to this. It is wonderful so I only deprived myself.
i'm with you on that one... i used to be so so on him. But his early stuff is actually quite good. His voice has just really declined in recent years, yet continues to sing roles not suited for him, i.e. Aida at La Scala... but thanks to youtube, we can enjoy some of his better performances like this one...
I agree you both...when he was younger he was great, maybe the best in his fach at that time...when has matured, the voice is not the same...i rememeber those days that he was marketed as a new Pavarotti, don´t know about that, but he was not bad this i know.
Ahhhhh love him! Saw him in Rome et Juliette alongside Anna Netrebko and they were both breathtaking. What a beautiful voice! There should be a place in everyone's heart for music like this.
The lovely Mimi is played by Leontina Vaduva. This is wonderful music and warms the soul...and he is marvelous as Rodolfo in La Boheme. Thank you for posting it.
No hizo caso.
WOW! Wonderful! That's Alagna as I would always like to hear him. Beautiful timbre. I expected a more explosive high C but still, the colour is superb!
Why weak High C? Because Alagna tuned the High C to the THIRD HARMONIC...he is not as great a resonnator as Pavarotti who usually easily tuned the High C to the Fourth Harmonic.....even better pull up Lanza's version...now there is a high C tuned to the Fouth harmonic...notice the incredible buzz and the depth of the note!!
Alagna was in the zone on this night - brilliant. This is one of my favorite recordings of his Rodolfo. And could there be a better Mimi than Vaduva? Angela comes close, but it's Vaduva for me! Thanks for these great videos, Meuzzab. Brilliant.
Continuing from prev comment: Alagna's interview about the incident can be found on youtube. It's all in Italian, however, so if you don't speak it, you'll be up a creek if you don't have a translator. The jist is that he thought the audience didn't want him and he was respecting their feedback. He also mentions that he lost considerable sleep and suffered enormous mortification as a result of it. People need to let that lie. His singing is wonderful.
He's an opera singer. He's entitled to his tantrums. You could say he's carying on a tradition that dates back to the days of Cafarelli and others. I think he sang this beautifully. For all you Pav fans, alagna was once hailed as the next Pavarotti. Btw, his walking out after being booed at La Scala wasn't a tantrum. In his interview, he reveals that he was absolutely mortified and felt like "the floor opened up beneath me." He couldn't sleep for days.
Yes, that did sound a bit constricted or something. Rest was all very good, although it was SLOW. Still, that could well be the MDs doing, not his. The C was good, and there IS more to the aira than that one note.....
The difference between this High C and Pavarotti's is a huge gaping chasm.....the only contenders include Aragal, Lanza, and DeStefano........Alaqna is not even close to these.....but still a great singer in his own right....
If you like Alagna, you'll like James Valenti. He's on youtube and has a website, jamesvalentiDOTcom. He's an American just starting out but he has landed a gig at La Scala. Enjoy
Well he is fantastic, but also see the mexican army like Villazon or specially David Lomeli singing this, the winner of Operalia is singing this also with Domingo at Los Angeles Opera this year. Alagna is great but this guy too and is a little more humble
He is undoubtedly a very god tenor. However, whoever rushes to accuse Villazon of 'pushed vocal production' better look at the strain of Alagna. Very good tenor, however, in my opinion Villazon is greater.
That's ridiculous. Alagna may be a little forced, but his technique is otherwise extremely good. Villazon's technique is quite bad in comparison. As proof, he is now having voice problems and has cancelled everything for about four months, including "L'Elisir" at the Royal Opera, which I'm going to see.
If you like Villazon's voice better than Alagna's, that's your cup of tea. However, he's NOT a better singer.
The acting was superb...great voice too. These two should win an award for ensemble acting.Lol. Just watch other che gelida manina and this truly stand out acting wise.

Beleave me, if I had a voice like that I would not be living in a kip like this.

Alagna was in the zone on this night - brilliant. This is one of my favorite recordings of his Rodolfo. And could there be a better Mimi than Vaduva? Angela comes close, but it's Vaduva for me! Thanks for these great videos, Meuzzab. Brilliant.

He is a very good tenor, however, I think his high C is a bit weak, shallow.

A most elegant tenor, in one of the most beautiful Operatic arias. He has everything !!!

Sorry but .......what C are we talking about ?
I prefer Luciano. Roberto can't give me gooseskin, Luciano can.
breddamarcus 4 years ago
Well, I mean... Luciano's Boheme... can you get better?

Much as I dislike Alagna as a person, if he sang this to me, and this well, I'd fall for him... He is simply irresistible here!

The difference between this high C and a real high C is that this is a B and not a C!!! Just a thought!
igancedo 4 years ago
think again pal...that's a C
jokerab112 4 years ago
yes it is... but it's lacking something...
mhwon3 4 years ago
a C that is a B is lacking half a tone.
This one isn't.
But the Bb on "son" did worry me!
cyfieithydd 4 years ago
Yes, that did sound a bit constricted or something. Rest was all very good, although it was SLOW. Still, that could well be the MDs doing, not his. The C was good, and there IS more to the aira than that one note.....
colino72 3 years ago
The difference between this High C and Pavarotti's is a huge gaping chasm.....the only contenders include Aragal, Lanza, and DeStefano........Alaqna is not even close to these.....but still a great singer in his own right....
GEVORK6 4 years ago
And the difference between Pavarotti's and Hadley's is even further.

Alagna is great but this guy too and is a little more humble
tenoresmexicanos 4 years ago
He is undoubtedly a very god tenor. However, whoever rushes to accuse Villazon of 'pushed vocal production' better look at the strain of Alagna. Very good tenor, however, in my opinion Villazon is greater.
djtsinopoulos 4 years ago
That's ridiculous. Alagna may be a little forced, but his technique is otherwise extremely good. Villazon's technique is quite bad in comparison. As proof, he is now having voice problems and has cancelled everything for about four months, including "L'Elisir" at the Royal Opera, which I'm going to see.
If you like Villazon's voice better than Alagna's, that's your cup of tea. However, he's NOT a better singer.
