People still work in the buildings surrounding this abandoned pyschiatric hospital. I literally worked in a building in the shadow of the asylum. The whole campus has a very bad vibe. I swear the bad vibes bleed into the walls of the surrounding buildings, because the 6 months I spent at the Dental Board (located next door) were some of the worst months of my life. Weird shadows, strange sounds. Just a feeling of oppression and hopelessness. Awful place. They should level it to the ground.
I worked in the Central Kitchen building as an assistant cook at Spring Grove from 10/71 to 10/73. At the time all these buildings were occupied with about 1800 patients having various mental disorders as well as recovering alcoholics. The PRR was still delivering coal to the hospital steam plant until late 1970, and still ran to Magruder Ave. with lumber cars until 4/72. I got to ride the train several times during the Summer of '68 between Beechfield Ave. and the warehouse along Mellor Ave.
I went to school next door at Catonsville High in the 70's - many times patrons of the hospital would wander onto our campus and they were pretty scary - I use to ride my bike through the hospital and would rarely see anyone outside - was too creepy to describe - was afraid I might end up there someday, glad I got my life together and never did!
i went to spring grove i was admitted there and i snuck in to one of the abandoned buildings and i saw something that should not have been there !!!!!! its fucked up!!!!!!
@TheAAABatteries I was going down one of the hallways in the building and i heard a noise and told my friend it was probably just a racoon or something so we continued walking and we didnt even take 5 steps and something indescribable large and shadow like at the end off the hallway whisped acrossed from one room to the other very quickly and we felt instantly cold and hauled ass out of there it was pretty scary and i have never encountered anything like it before.

I visited this place back in the mid-90's to borrow some hospital equipment for a promotional event we were holding at a local movie theater. The buildings are amazing, but there is something seriously eerie there.
There is a way in....an open window to the basement along the side of the building....but its your health you have to worry about, so much led paint, etc...
@warriorcatfan565 I don't believe in ghosts. I DO believe that the people who believe in ghosts DO believe it's haunted. That's fine for them, but I don't believe in ghosts, so I don't believe it's 'haunted'.
The old spooky looking building is the Foster-Wade Building. This was built in two stages, the main and eastern wing in 1914, and the western wing (near Rice Auditorium) in 1917. This housed the criminally insane. Although not credited in the movie, this was used in "Silence of the Lambs" when Clarice was to meet Hannibal Lecter for the first time. The set was in the second basement.
why didnt you go in? ive never believed in this stuff, but ive always said that when i die if i have a choice to become a ghost, i will, just to prove one way or the other.
The old buildings are derelict, but the compound has newer buildings and is still active. A few people have explored inside, but they are pretty secure. I wouldn't suggest it.
I would love to be able to, but they are boarded up and locked pretty good. If I asked, I dont think it's simply a matter of someone coming over to open a door for me. They're also placarded with asbestos notices, etc...
Awesome.

My friends & I used to cut thru Spring Grove walking to and from school. Patients are still housed here, but nowhere near as many as in the past.

My great grandmother was committed to Spring Grove at age 56 & died there at the same age. Suicide? Or something else? Don't know.

HoracePL 2 years ago
@HoracePL It's steam. It's used to heat the buildings (that are in use) - it runs in pipes underground.

They'd probably only do it if you had protective gear. They went to Chernobyl on Destination Truth. It's often a question of resources.
