I was driving north on 35W and traffic came to a complete stop. I ended up on the County Road C overpass as people climbed out of their cars, staring off to the northwest. We could clearly see the small tornado moving along.
I had moved up to MN a month before this tornado. Saw it coming out of the clouds on my way to work at Rosedale mall. I was like, "WTF?", never saw one until that day.
I remember this shit! I was at Chuck E. Cheese and we were all under the tables and some men at the front kept yelling back about how long before it hit us. Damn thing evaporated right before it got there. Crazy video.
my granny was in that tornado and she was in the basement and when she came up her house was gone it tore up Springbrook nature center and they said the guy could of been fired for being to close to it
I rember this; it was during Paul Douglas's "reign of terror" as a Chicken Little at KARE. I don't reall if at the time he declared the entire upper midwest to be under convective assult because of this typically weak July vortex, but I'm sure even then that he mentioned that "man's reliance on carbon based fuels" where responsible for the torando. People familier with Douglas (KARE/WCCO) know what I'm talking about.....
@Squirrlyburt ...so true! I thought that I was the only person that saw through his histeria. I wonder if Douglas has ever consider the inconvient facts about "Global Warming"!!??
I remember coming home to Duluth from a weekend at Valley Fair and seeing this on the news. I was only 5 but I remember it so cuz it was when I started learning about and taking interest in tornadoes. When we were gone a possible but not confirmed tornado ripped through the West end and Lincoln Park areas of Duluth. Everyone was fine but some signs and roofs got hit hard. Everyone around here remembers this weekend!
ohh wow at the minnesota history museum theres a tornado exhibit and if you go in it its like your in a fake basement and they make all the weather effects in stuff its really fun/cool/scary i went in it 2wice
I can remember watching this live..even my dad stopped work to come and watch....you have to remember that, in 1986, live chopper broadcasts were still a relatively new thing. It was one of the few things that we recorded on video...(in our state of the art top loading vcr :) )
at the minnesota history museum there is a tornado exhibit where u stay in the room and there is a tv on with people from that time in there basement and in the room the lights turn of a tree "falls" and lightning "hits"
this question is for anyone who knows the answer.. but um.. i was just wondering are skinny-like tornados stronger or weaker than the big wide ones? thx :)
umm actuly any tornado can be strong wide or skinny but usully the wider ones are rated F3 or over so the wider ones are stornger that awnser ur qusetion if not just ask
I have pictures from my aunt who took them from the Northtown Mall parking lot when she worked at the Montgomery Wards in the mall. It is just across 10 from Springbrook Nature Center.
I was in Brooklyn Park when it happened. Even with todays technolgy, YouTube video just doesn't give it justice - The quality just isn't there. On the original live tv version the clairty was frightening. Around 2:25 you see them move to a close up shot, we watched 60 foot oak trees torn out of the ground like they were blades a grass... KARE 11 aired the whole thing (like 47 minutes of straight footage) a week or two afterword. If anybody knows where to get a copy, shoot me a reply.
I just heard that Hugo, MN just got nailed by a tornado a few hours ago... Hugo is about 5 miles down Highway 61 from where I just moved from. I moved from Wyoming, MN. I heard that most of Wyoming has no power.
I was living in Maple Grove at that time, and the funnel formed just across Jefferson Highway over a corn field. We weren't suspecting anything because it was almost perfect weather on our side of the storm. The siren started blaring right out of the blue, and we thought my mom was kidding when she yelled "TORNADO!". When we realized it was for real, it was down to the basement we went. When we watched this footage, we thought the pilot really had balls to fly right in front of that thing.
My grandma was the only one on her block that was left. My dad was only about 10 or 11 or 12 years old when this happend. I live in minnesota too, I heard it was like a 9/11 dissaster! I'm only 11 years old, almost turning 12, and I still think these tornados here in MN are dangerouse!
wanna know something sick for all you fellow minnesotans...my mom and I were in the target that is just next to that springbrook nature center...it was the coolest thing I had ever seen but that was as close and personal with a twister as I EVER want to get again :-)
I was 6 when this happened. I remember I was sobbing behind the couch, scared witless. I was in St.Paul, but I know the sirens were going there too. My cousin lived in BP and he and a buddy were sitting on their garages WATCHING the thing, all of 1 mile away and drinking Pepsi. In hindsight, I'd prolly tell my 6 year old self to watch the stupid thing because I'd be spotting them, and looking for them in about 14 years!
I remember watching this LIVE that day, they actually chased and filmed the thing for nearly 10 minutes. This footage was very helpful to those who study tornadoes. There were five tornadoes that day in the Mpls St paul area touching down all at once in various areas.
I remember the pilot of the chopper for KARE rode in the parade with his chopper, and was the local hero for a long time. I watched this live on TV while in Dinkytown, only to see my apartment building on TV. Awsome, almost no damage to any structures, just lots a couches spread around from a furniture storage place.
I have a question for you Anticyclonic. Is there any chance you can get some sort of footage of the tornado that tore through Union City Oklahoma in 1971? I grew up in the Union City/El Reno area and I like watching stuff about tornadoes.
I remember that day very well, I was 15, driving home from McDonalds with my Mom on Mississippi Blvd in Coon Rapids, and we saw that black cone hanging from the sky across the river. That was the first tornado I ever saw in real life. We flew home as fast as we could. Looking back, that was pretty scary, Sringbrook Nature Center wasn't all that far away!
