the problem I see with Ai is that the program hasn't changed since, well, 89', which means that the type of art you can design is largely limited, and very similar the the mid 90's. Sure there are people who with time and patience can create photorealistic images in ai, but it can now be done faster with other software. I've always used ai for design/layouts, for that it's brilliant but not illustration. Most ai files come out looking like either 90's crap or early 2000's clean flower crap.
this is a great program - I was shocked to see it done on such old pc's but that means todays pc's will be giving even better results - that's right, a make is a pc because pc simply means Personal Computer
Ah, the good old days, before Adobe made a zillion different versions of their stuff and got into suites and bundles and LE versions and God-only-knows-what. Marketing people have a way of destroying everything they touch.
A thing to be considered about these graphics packages' marketing material: they always said that everyone could create professional-looking art with those software. But still only the ones with the skill can make good things.
Nice one... I liked the video a lot! I first seen Illustrator, I guess, around the 5th to 7th edition, don't know for sure, but it was around 11 years ago... As well as freehand, like the 6th or 7th... Photoshop I guess I seen it first time around the 3rd version, and I can only say... Man those times were good!
Did you noticed when he says that the main purpose of the artist is to go for a PRINTED sheet? WOW...
Not nowadays... Web, mobile, print, TV, and who nows what!
That laser printer cost about $7000. Did you notice those s-l-o-w screen refreshes? And how did we see what we were doing on a monochrome monitor 7 inches wide? Ah, those were the days. The "end of drudgery". Yep.
I'm sure it's a different actor but doesn't he REALLY sound and look like the guy who did the iPhone introduction videos last year? Must be some kind of "Bay Aryan" thing (aka: NoCAL yuppie)
this ad is awesome. ;D thanks alot for this stuff; and check out #illustrator on quakenet to hang out with our sort of people. AI, vectors, prepress, DTP, indesign.. etc.
The stock market, publishing and graphic design today owe a great debt to AI88. Flash graphics as we know them would not exist and it is really unfortunate that few people know the bezier tools. This is one of the very few tools which made great designers out of young students.
My god autotrace sucks! Gladly they removed it in CS2.
We have had a little of Ilustrator 88 in our today computers... basically when you want to export from Flash to Illustrator it gives you the opfion to export in 88 AI... I hope this gets fixed in CS4.
This video is so cool, you should put the other tutorials it comes with.

It's pretty funny, that it's been over 20 years since this, and I still can't figure out how to use the Pen/Line tool (tracing) properly. ;)
Gotta dig the "professional illustrator's" style though. Mullet - check. Wall Street style shirt, suspenders and Oliver Peoples glasses - check. Smug facial expression - check.

I hate the "anyone can do it" sales pitch, makes me think of drum machines and bad music.

Agreed, look at the works of masters like Miyamoto. He could school all of these new age hipsters who can't even manage a gradient mesh.

I think they mean that anyone willing to spend the TIME to master Illustrator can then create professional-looking results.
I'm not a professional graphics designer by any means, but I know enough about Illustrator to be able to achieve some rather good results.
