they could have been teh Canadian reply to "California Guitar Trio",instead, only Lenny became (even if very little) known and recognized years afterwards of the three
I dunno. Looks like they're just standing there miming a record. Nobody's plugged into an amp, and 1960's wireless technology sucked. And would it have killed them to actually light the musicians?
I'm a Lenny Breau fanatic, I'm in love with the guy, started a therapy group for people like me...... Lenny was so hot...I'd be equally honoured if you joined the group and shared some of your personal feelings on Lenny for those who are equally warped and deranged.
Wow, Jim Pirie! I played in a couple of musicals in Toronto with him, VERY nice guy, who is also quite talented as a sketch artist. My favourite memory of Jim is the fact that every time I walked through a doorway when he was near he did the old gag of jamming himself right in the door frame with me! He could time it so well, made him laugh every time!
I have learned a lot from the comments and all, but where's the rest?? Was Lenny getting ready to solo? Sounds like CBC has gone the way of BBC.... sad, remember when you could count on seeing and hearing some really good music back then on the tube.... that's all over... all these guys are fantastic- Lenny, a pure Genius.
So beautiful ... close your eyes and you'd assume there was more than three people and certainly more than "mere" guitars (I have played for years, I am hardly saying anything bad about guitars!) What a shame there is not more of this talent today rather than people screaming at eachother and bad mouthing eachother through music.
Jim is still around...would love to meet him again...In 1965 he coached me in a studio on Jarvis St. Would love to ask him some questions regarding his career
Just think of all the video tape that CBC has and all the treasures that lie in thier vaults. My Mom & Aunts played on the CBC produced show Country Hoedown...Wish I could see more of Jim Pirie
now with cbc's mega billion dollar budget they produce trash like goerge laguganis psychopathic liberal claptrap crap ....I wish they would ear down the cbc building and fire all its employees
Singer Reg Gibson, who had been a member of the chorus on Swingalong, and Jim Pirie, guitarist with the Selkirk Settlers on Red River Jamboree, had had a program of country music called Shenandoah on radio since 1962. In July 1962, they moved the program to television and changed its name to Ballads and Bards.
I get chills listening to this. There have been so few recorded examples of this kind of sound, with three guitars playing harmonized lines. This recording is just stunning. To think of having a whole CD of these guys...I would pay a pretty penny for that. I just can't get enough of this.
Ron Halldorson is on record saying that "Lenny taught them the 2nd tune"Days of Wine and Roses" out of his head" Nothing was written down. Halldorson went on to be the bass player in the Lenny Breau Trio
Jim Pirie..Great video: When I was 12 or 13 I auditioned for Tommy Hunter and an Aranger by the name of Art Snider. I had an old Framus arched guitar and made my way to Jarvis street CBC studio. My Mom and aunts were practising for Country Hoedown and I was off to a studio and sat beside Jim Pirie and we played a bit in a recording room.
The version of "The Song is You" is a flawless reproduction of Tony Mottola's multi-track effort on an early 60's album. Johnny Carson was fond of featuring Tony on the Tonight Show, calling him "Mr. Big"
AND won an emmy for the score for "Alaska: Story of a Dream" AND has a cute lil grand-daughter AND still has all his hair after kicking cancer's butt but good.
Mr. Garret, your entry here is lovely to see and I thank you! Dad does too :)

This tune is really nice.
Jimmy Pirie, from wpg, home of many fine guitar players, still.
I think He played the theme song to the Max Ferguson show on CBC radio, it was a tune known as "the clarinet polka" it was outstanding.
I would like to see/hear more Jimmy Pirie.

This is a totally different league of guitar playing here. It's almost a symphony of guitars.

@radioactiveroach indeed, they transcended the jazz 'thing' here, to something even greater.

Great version of The Song is You. I love seeing Lenny's earlier stuff before drugs stole his life later on. He was one of the greatest in my eyes.

Don't ever take this down from youtube! It's amazing! Is there a version of this on MP3???
getapokeon 4 years ago 3
I'm afraid there isn't.
There is a full version of this show which remains in the CBC's vaults (if I'm not mistaken) and has yet to be officially released.

I had the opportunity of jamming with Lenny in the early 80's. I miss him a lot. It's good to see these videos and savor the music.
