i mean if you really look @ it we use everyone elses natural hair, so what wrong with ours ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.... I mean even in conversation, Blacks growing their hair naturally is somewhat a revolutionary idea, What's so cutting edge about letting your hair grow out of your hair the way The Most Hight intended it to be. Styling is Cool straightening is fine also.... as long as you do not chemically alter or disguise what you have. Be Mentally Free Peace!!!
black girls are the only woment who can rock braids, a weave, a fro, curls and a straight style in the same week!!!!!! i luv my naps and proud to rock them
hi my name is anna and i live in london and im originated from ghana but im really proud to hear you saying about the african using fake hair because to me its not right i have dreadlocs and im really proud of having dreadlocs and im happy your making these videos even my daughter has african natural hair she has never permed and im happy your making these videos thank you
You're not too sensitive, your eyes see clearly. Don't cringe about "dreadlocks", the meaning has been lost in antiquity. I'm from the days and the country where the name originated...nowadays they don't actually mean it's dreadful, like in the old days...it's just a name now.You say what I say and we all need to say it, "What's wrong with our hair?" Your hair is wonderful and we have so many styles. Singer Janelle Monae's hair is beautiful too...and Solange.A pleasure listening to you, miss.
BG i did the big chop like 3 times so to me its not so BIG anymore...i 100% agree with your feeling about being natural, its like Black women cant understand that the legacy of slavery says "you are not good enough as you are"...we need to say NO.we are good enough untouched, then we gotta live like its true or it will never really be true. Thanks for posting. I love natural its loving the creators way.

I'm a new subscriber & luv ur videos to death (think ur fabulous)! I can so relate to this video--the color & hair complex in the African American community, & "seeing the invisible to do the impossible." Thanks so much for this. Praying for u and ur family :0) & the new one on the way! Take care!
1. Your eyelids are beautiful. 2. I thought we were so past that foolishness. You are so right. I did not realize how pretty I was until I did my BC. For real. It's weird. 3. I don't have locs and I will correct someone in a second when they say Dreads. 4. You are beautiful and I enjoyed your video. Ihave had so many compliments on my chop.
Thank you SO MUCH! You have no idea. I Just got off the phone with my boyfriend saying that I want my hair back! I just did the BIG Chop forreal by shaving it all off like a was a 1yr old boy :-) I love it but I hated the comments that said I was "Brave" to cut my hair or "I could never do something like that". It feels good to have someone look at the screen and say the things you said. Thank You.
I agree w/ you totally. What Solange did took me 20 years to do!!! I know your video was last year, but I'm just viewed it now (oops! LOL). I was natural for 10 years, but I had it press & curl. Then I got tired of it, & wanted to do something different. I didn't have to do the "big chop." I finally embraced my hair. I love my locs!!! I totally love them!! I wish I started it earlier in my life. Like you, I hate when ppl call it "dreadlocks." I correct them by saying, "locs."
Beautiful hair! I saw Beyonce without makeup. She is what white folks call beautiful (for a black person). She looked like an old fucking ugly white womyn.
Thank you so much for the encouragement! I will definitely add this to my favorites,so that I can look at if for those days when I look into the mirror at my soon to be TWA, and the temptation rises to run and buy a boxed relaxer. Again thanks fort the encouragement!
I just had to LOL at how this was supposed to be quick. I actually prefer Solange, the person compared to Beyonce, the person. She will never step outside of her sister's shadow, but at least she's coming into herself.
PREACH IT GIRL. MY GOODNESS. You know, this positive "going natural" trend a lot of Black females are realizing (with the glorious help of youtube) is what some academics also describe as the GREAT AWAKENING. I see a lot more youths ( though there could be more LOL) just tired of doing nothing in life. Having esteem in our own beauty is the first step, then it's nutrition, then it's how you view relationships, raise your children etc. and a lot of what we discover goes against the stereotypes.
I watch youtube plenty for makeup tutorials and other randomness but never subscribed..why? I'm not going to make vids.I just subscribed to be able to comment on ur vid. Preach it sistah! I'm the mother to a curly locked little girl. I want her to grow up loving her hair.Im Latina but my daughters father is bi-racial. I feel the same way about my Latin sistah. I love Solange's new look. Who ever says she looks ugly needs to look again. She is smokin hot! I LOVE what u said. Ur locks are bangin!
she looks beautiful i believe that we naturally start to glow when we fully accept ourself ... and i find her very courageous cuz as a celebrity it's very hard to choose your own appearance i really admire that.
about the BC I agree with BG ^^100%
@phoenixa12 maybe its her make up that is not always appropriate to her new face
be patient for your BC :) maybe you could try a few things like tight them back like a little afro or do braids with your hair (micro size) its lovely
I have a big chop as well and me personally have to still get used to it.. As for Solange I just don't think that her face takes the bc so well..maybe some people need to grow it out more for it to compliment our face....I like her music and all so I don't have anything against her I just think they are working with her hair, or something she has to do more with it!!
Black people make other black people feel ugly. Thats why they feel they need weaves and relaxed hair, also, its easier to manage but hard to maintain.
@MaiyaCasiano1 A statement that means her embracing who she is naturally. That's not beautiful? Okay. Natural beauty is much better than altered beauty.
@KTBEverlasting You dont have to agree of course. The media has already decided for us so..... Let her go ahead and be herself is why she will never be as popular as her sister, call it conforming all you want ...But anyway if she likes it, whatever.
@MaiyaCasiano1 Honestly, one of the reasons why Beyonce is so popular because she altered appearance. If someone said you had to get a nose job to be more popular, would you do it? Rhetorical question
@KTBEverlasting IF I WANTED TO DO IT AND I THOUGHT IT WOULD MAKE ME LOOK BETTER ABSOLUTELY! ALONG WITH MY ASS, BREAST, STOMACH AND WHATEVER ELSE. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE LOOK DOWN ON USING ENHANCEMENTS AS A BAD THING. IT ABSOLUTELY MAKES YOU LOOK BETTER. LET ME PUT MYSELF INTO IT. IF WE HAD A VOTE WITH ME IN TWO PICS ..ONE WITHOUT ANY ENHANCEMENTS AND ONE WITH THEM WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN? BUT I THINK IM OFF TOPIC, AGAIN IF SHE LOVES IT GO HER! BUT MY OPINION REMAINS
You are sooo right! I have always loved natural hair even when I was relaxed. i remember always feeling guilty for relaxing and then when the new growth came in I loved feeling it. I then finally decided to just let my natural hair grow b/c I have hair so I should care for it and keep it healthy and it can grow as long as I want it. I like Solange too.
I just did my Big Chop and I liked it... its ok now but i can tell that the growing process is gonna be a nappy one and i only have 3weeks new growth lol. For me its challenge, but Im gonna battle it out to see if I can be victorious; no promises... as for Solange I think she looks just beautiful. Also let me say that it takes a strong confident woman to willing do what we have done, GIRL POWER rock on
Like others, I agree with what you're saying 110%!! And no, you're not being over sensitive or dramatic b/c I have given this exact speech to soooo many ppl! Part of the reason I originally went natural was b/c I wanted ppl to except me for who I really am! This was more than a hair journey for me, especially being where I'm from...it became almost spiritual!!but, I feel you, I'm with you and I understand!!
I absolutely agree with everything you said. I think the reason why people are scared of the big chop and going natural is because they are not strong mentally. When I went natural and locked my hair fifteen years ago I faced alot of negativity from my sistas and brothas of color. But I love my hair and that was all that mattered to me. People want instant length and locs but are not willing to have patience with themselves.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts in this video. I agree with everything you said. I totally got where you are coming from. From the locks, to the growth process, to the change in jobs(finding God's purpose)...you are totally on it!
You go girl. Your right and people know it. Alot of people want instant gratification...therefore Loc Extentions are popular (nice) but these individuals aren't putting the "time in". Love your hair..I too am a loc wearer..Sisterlocks!
Now home school because of so mannny people like to make fun of me
For decideding to cut MY hair I mean I don't understand I wanna try something I wanna know what my hair is like with out hair dye perms and all that stuff yes it's hard but I'm going to try soo hard not to even give up(: you have inspierded me to keep this going being natural is a beautfuil thing!
Your LOCKS are lovely you did great and your make up ON point(;
I have loose natural hair for the last 1.5 yrs and locs for 8 yrs before that. There are still days when I struggle with the way my hair looks. I think our society has done so much damage to the psych of black people that we have trouble seeing the beauty in ourselves and our people. We have been brainwashed, bamboozled, led astray. As naturals we must continue to support each other on our journey. This is not an easy journey, but well worth it.
BronzeGoddess you are very intelligent and inspirational. I did the "Big Chop" 07/23/10 and I have never felt better about myself. The only problem is the way that others react. People act like a woman is no longer beautiful unless she has a weave or a perm. I have that vision that you spoke of in regards to school and my natural hair's health and beauty, and I thank you for helping me to appreciate it even more. God bless you and your vision!!
OMG. I hav jus fallen in love with u, no homo. but neways u are so beautiful. i love ur personality. u are an inspiration 2 me. i am natural but i dont hav locs. i do want to get those sistah locs. I jus started watchin ur videos 2nite. You hav been very helpful 2 me. thank you, and thanks for the encouraging words. peace
wow!!!! love this ViD...This is my second time doing the "BiG ChoP" and I would do it all over again!!! I now have baby locks and would never go back to relaxers....EVER ;)....She is so right when others will have an opinion about ur hair, or what u may do in life. Who are they to judge. This sista took the words right out of my mouth....
I love the the way you think about the subject. The natural journey is very difficult but it is a process to accept and love your OWN NATURAL hair. I cringe when people ask why i want to have my natural hair. Like you said, "What's wrong with MY own natural hair?" I feel like people think that I don't look as pretty with my own hair> As Black women, sometimes our view upon ourselves, our hair, is so jaded and so one-track and so negative!
@cinnabun77 Remember the influence of living in a world where one race has dominated for hundreds of years. Their idea of beauty also dominates. That's why there's skin-bleaching,hair straightening and shame of noses being horizontal and not vertical that have developed as the standards of beauty. It's nonsense, but we have to be patient with our sisters (and brothers, who DEMAND these standards from the sisters) and give them time to wake up. It will take long, 'cause it's been long.
BG....my gosh girl you are so right.....this is exactly how I feel too!....Why are we the only race that is not allowed to wear our hair natural!!!!!........I have had locks for just over two years now and had soooo many lovely comments. Do you know that all the beautiful comments have actually come from mainly white people?!!!!...... I just want you to know you have the most beautiful locks and when mine grow up, I hope they will look as lovely as yours!!
i feel you on the dreadlocks thing...makes me cringe too. and i wanted you to knw that you've been a HUGE inspiration to me. i've been locked four yrs almost five now. but im currently in the process of removing them. I LOVE MY LOCKS...but its time for something different. i locked in highschool now im in college and i want a loose natural style now. im so happy i went natural early in life....i knw im going on and on but i just wanted you to knw I APPRECIATE YOU. thanks for all the vids.
Solange looks better without all of that fake hair. Work it, Solange! Her short hair made her face look more radiant and beautiful than ever. Perhaps her big sister will stop putting that foolishness in her hair too. Janet Jackson did the big chop recently and it took at least 5 years off of her face IMHO.
@MochaKnitster007 they were hating on Janet too and i was wondering, whats the big deal, woman decide to go natural, but ppl prefer her fake. what is this world coming to?
One more comment: I recommend the book HAIR STORY for anyone who wants to know the history of our hair or is considering the big chop. The one thing that sticks out to me in the book is right in the beginning (I think it's the beginning) it talks about how slaves would put lard and butter in their hair to make it straight to look more European and to be accepted by the slave owners. Those were the first "relaxers". And every time I get one put in my head I think about that.
Thank you so much for being so open and honest about this subject. It's so funny that some of us think going back to our roots is a bad thing (for the lack of a stronger phrase) when the bad thing is trying to stay away from our roots as much as possible. Thanks again for speaking on this subject.
I couldn't even get through your entire video because you were speaking so much SENSE. Although my hair is relaxed, I am seriously in the process of going back to my roots (literally). I think it's unfortunate that we as Black people have been made to believe that something we were ORIGINALLY born with is so retched. It's even sadder that some of us don't see it as a sign of an almost self-hatred, that was "instilled" in our ancestors when they were brought over to this country.
I think Solange looks better with the short natural hair more than she did with the wigs and weaves. It suits her.
I think any woman can rock any hair style she likes if she wears it with confidence. And it's this confidence that makes Solo look BANGIN'. I hope a bitch takes out a restraining order on weaves.
Also, I don't know if any of you have seen Janet Jackson lately. She's also rocking her short, natural hair and looks amazing!!
I had no idea that Solange had exp the "big chop". While viewing and listening to you, I searched for pic of her to confirm and I was very surprised but pleased. I think she looks absolutely beautiful. I exp the big chop twice in my lifetime and it was extremely liberating and inspiring for me. It was almost like stepping onto another level of self appreciation or acceptance. I agree with you 100%. Thanks for the post.
PREACH!!!! you took all the words out of my mouth!!! natural hair is the bomb and it says a LOT for people who rock it. WE ARE BOLD AND STRONG AND BEAUTIFUL! oh and another thing is "WE LOOK LIKE THIS WHEN WE WAKE UP!" ha ha ha. im loving it. i have gotten a lot of comments being loc'd. and what i love is no one can have the "SAME" hair as me like the chics in the salon all gettin the same style hair.
Hey Lock-sistah :) I get you and appreciate the way you brought that all together. :) The 'big chop' is not about being different or being a rebel, but in the greater sense it's about being freed to go in whatever direction the Lord wants to lead you (whether that be permed, natural, being a chef or accountant); it's about doing what needs to be done to get where you're meant to be. Great vid. Q.
thank you for this! As a person with natural hair.... I have been always proud of my hair.. but when confronted with comments about perms and what not...i really didnt know how to challenge those. so thank you for the inspiration with your vlog!
Natural black hairstyles rock! I loc'd my hair in spite of certain other people, who advised me to 'put some straightener in it or something' and now she just ignores it. I did it for me, and I love it, love it. It has been healthier and grows better. So glad I was brave enough to do my 'big chop'.
Natural black hairstyles rock! Those haters are just jealous! It has been healthier and grows better. So glad I was brave enough to do my 'big chop'.
Natural black hairstyles rock! Those haters are just jealous! I loc'd my hair in spite of my mom, who advised me to 'put some straightener in it or something' and now she just ignores it. I did it for me, and I love it, love it. It has been healthier and grows better. So glad I was brave enough to do my 'big chop'.

Do you know that ive started new jobs and people have come up to me and said 'You could be so cute if you didnt have dreads.' Thank Goodness Ive learned to bite my tongue and not snap on those ignorant types. What a breath of fresh air to have other sistas like myself be proud of their crowns!
Tell the truth sista!! I totally agree with you.WE have a problem with our hair, we don't accept it! I rock my fro since 3 yrs now, but every time I'm talking wit' African women they always told me to do something wit my hair! Do what??? That's my hair!!! Why they don't tell a Chinese girl, a white girl to do something with their hair!!
We have to accept ourselves like God make us!! We have to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery like Bob Marley said!!!
I'm feelin you! Why is that we know how to style and care for our weaves and not the hair that god gave us? I'm glad you brought this to the table. Thank you!
Great message, Thanks 4 sharing. I used wigs for protective styling after I did the BC. I waited over a year to wear my natural hair in public. During that time, I learned about various products and techniques to take care of MY hair. As my hair grew, my knowledge and love for my natural texture did as well. I've been WIG FREE 4 FIVE MONTHS.
im transitioning to natural then locs and i soo really hate also when people refer to locs as dreads urgggh inside i burn up lol! Even tho they mean well i just wish the stigma wasnt attachd.
8:03 - 8:13 Appreciating you, poo-poo! OoooKkkkaaaaayyyyyyy. I think Solange is looking fly! BTW, ignorance is a serious thing. The only way we address ignorance is with information and education. I ALWAYS let people know that "my locks are nothing to dread!" I say it in love and they accept my statement. They need to know. Tell 'em, girl, tell 'em!... And I appreciate the word, sis. Preach, sista. With loc'd love!
WORD!!! I could not have said it better. People are afraid of anything that is different. By not conforming to typical beauty standards and going for the big chop, Solange asserts her personal strength and commitment to her journey. If down the road she chooses to weave it, dye it, perm it, or whatever, she will have gained some knowledge of self from going through this process the way she wanted to do it.
I didn't know your vlog was about Solange's big chop. I think she looks beautiful and has her own unique look that separates her from her sister. What I want to add is that her music is a very soulful R&B.
I believe 100% in the big chop. My hair took one year to grow back to it's permed length. Healthy...no permed ends straggling around. My only regret is that I locked it right away instead of getting to know my natural texture more which is a looser curl pattern.
So I attempted to read ALL of the comments on this video...i ddnt do it,but the overwelming concensis is..AMEN SISTAH!!!..i swear u made my heart smile wit this one..and uve made me fall n luv wit my locs all ovr again...i could go on and on about how encouraged u made me,but i will save u the time!!!..THANKYOU!
i correct people when they call my hair "dreadlocks". i will tell then i have locs and then of course they want to know why. well i am willing to explain. but what get s me is the people that have locs and when you educate them they say "whatever i am still calling them dreads". I just want to say you are so ignorant.
Most of the people that wanted her to get a perm or weave were probably from the south. When I came to the south (texas) from NYC I had my natural hair. I was told by one simple minded person that my hair looked terrible and I should get a perm. It seems that they are still enslaved in the south especially here in texas. I wear a wig now just so people would leave me alone. It's bad here in texas. 1% on the population is natural.
i agree with everything you said except that part where you said it all starts with the big chop...actually, i think that way is easier...i had fairly decent length natural hair before i started locking and i must say its notably more difficult to loc longer hair...adjusting to it and ur videos actually have helped me more than you know..so thanks hon
Beautifully stated BronzeGoddess01, I see your vision and it is very motivational to women of color, and do hope more of us can see the true beauty within, and embrace our beautiful hair in the many of textures there are. We need to love ourselves more and stop trying to be a prototype in a magazine!
I did my big chop (for the second time) around the same time Solange did hers. Although, mine was slightly shorter. Yes, shorter! lol! But I've never felt more liberated than when I accepted what I was given at birth as being mine. I never wore weaves but I did have a sordid relationship with relaxers and it's nothing more than hair bondage. It's funny to hear people say that straight hair is lower maintenance but fortunately I'm not bound to purchasing relaxers anymore! lol! I agree with ya!
i love your rant you are so on point.( Plus im a Gemini and i have locs and a young daughter weird huh)Even tho im not american Im from the caribbean..i am very in tune to your media and i long to see more black women on the fore front with natural hair. I agree with you on getting compliments on your locs..its feels damn good..its worth the struggle!!...please keep making more videos , i look forward to your vlogs :)
Nothing Wrong with rockin your own hair, You are SO Right and I Agree 100%
Some of US ( not me) are still Sleep and Need to be Awaking. Hopefully this Video will make enough noise to wake these Folks. They Need It , Baddddddddd
love this vid...i totally understand, had locs...chopped them off bc got tired of them, but ...went short..loved it, esp the diff stages my hair went through, then did the locs again...this time i am in love with them bc i take care of them no one grooms them but moi...and boy has it been a learning exp in patience...love and committement...
but 2 yrs going strong..or at least in July it will be..
I think Solange is gorgeous, but I understand wanting the long dreads right away. I started my Sisterlocks 11 years ago with 2" of natural hair. But with an average face and being 6' tall, I didn't like the short look. That reaction resulted from the awful teasing I suffered from my own people when I had a TWA. Today my SLs are waist-length, so I now I feel like a African goddess! If dreadlock extensions could have been used to start locks, I might have done that.
it's sad bc it's the people that arent natural that make those comments.....wow so sad for them to think so simple....great video as always BronzeGoddess01
I understand exactly what your saying. We were created as a ppl with texture in our hair which I think is beautiful and I dont understand why more of us cant embrace it. I started locs almost 3 months ago but ive been natural for almost three years and just like you said some ppl thought i was crazy for cutting all my hair off but its what i wanted. The media and society does create this image that we should look a certain way but if God wanted us to be that way He would have made it so.
First time watcher..... and if this is is what you got, I am now a fan. You just spoke into my spirit right on time.. THANK YOU!
P.S. Solange is gorgeous and TO ME she looks prettier than Beyonce now that she has BC. I never noticed her before but now all you can see is her face.. She is stunning.
The worst hair "complement" that I ever got: "You have such "good" hair, you didn't have to get dreads."-my permed, weaved, and edgeless co-worker.lol.
I Wouldn't be bothered by people with such low low self esteem that they feel like those ugly plastic like things are better looking on their heads....I just loced, 1 month into it, fuzzies or no fuzzies, I love tha fact that I am so comfortable in my own skin and hair that nothing else matters. Rock it girl! I love your videos!
There is nothing wrong with us rockin' our hair, this is what is NORMAL .... NATURAL HAIR... but some men/women think "fried, dyed and laid to the side" is what's natural hair. There is nothing wrong with that but this is my choice... and we all are still BEAUTIFUL!!!!......... But I'm there with you..... I love my natural locs.....
Gurl your off the chain....Love ya Continue to be you... that's what makes you ....YOU BronzeGoddess01
You don't have to do a 'Big Chop' in order to get locs, but I agree with the majority of your words :D In mainstream media, different is dangerous and in order to control the masses, you have to make sure everyone dresses the same, talks the same, and pretty much live cloned lifestyles. In wearing her natural hair, Solange is sending a big FU to the media and therefore influencing thousands of young black girls that loving your hair is a GOOD thing. Different is dangerous but also HELLA SEXY!!!
You are so right, I mean I have received a lot of negativity over my locs but I just keep it moving as so many of us do. I'm at a point where I am comfortable with myself as a black woman, and to be honest with all the other issues surrounding weave, european hair doesn't even suit our features! Solange knowles looks great and oozes confidence, personally I feel like beyonce should take a leaf outta her book lol.
@PROUDAME really what kind and why..now i am really scared to grow locks..but I only live once.. I think i am more frightened of not being able to get a job, and having to shave my head completely bald and wear wigs..horrific..I hate fake hair..and just the thought makes me cringe...
@KMELIZ21 no don't feel that way sis, locs demand attention and unfortunatley some of our own people don't know how to take individuals who are confident and unconcerned about what mainstream society says is ok. i think natural hair says a lot about a persons mindset, locs are a growth of your hair and mind, so once you're ready you'll find that what other people say really won't concern you.
And yea... when people acknowledge my locs I feel really good for all the work i put in... cuz yea 4 years is quite a while. I got more compliments with them than i ever did with a relaxer. Your hair is beautiful btw.
I love the look! I saw comments about her chop too and they really disturbed me. People always have something negative to say when someone goes against 'the norm'.always!! Anywhere! Such a shame that weave among black celebs is the norm.
Agree totally!! I just did my BC and it's hard to stand when no one else around understands. Lol But it is really a freeing and liberating experience. My ultimate goal is locks. As far as the history I read that they are called dreadlocks because the spiritual men who wore them "dreaded", or feared God. So I'm not sure what to call them. Lol I'll just say locks to be safe. :)
I havent retwisted in about 3-4 weeks...i love my natural Locd state...when its not neat and every hair in place...For real, if i wanted my hair to be neat and in place all the time i would have remained a permy...the point of me going natural is to let my hair do its thing...I agree with the whole "dreadlock" term...I always cringe, and i think i do it openly...i cant stand that term...I have Locs...I am Loc'd... like you said there is nothing dreadful about my hair...Preach Gurl!!
you are not being too sensitive or over dramatic! I have always asked myself the same questions. I still do! I think black hair will always be an issue for black women b/c we make it an issue. it must be done up by any means necessary!! how many times do you hear about women not paying their rent or even worse putting up with a man just to get their hair done? Its a sickness! we need to stop! Its only hair for crying out loud!!
I needed that word girl! I did just come for the "real talk" but you started preaching girl!!!!! That's what I have learned so far this year, I am only obligated to please God and if you don't fall in line with that....oh well. Thank you so much for what you do. :-)
I feel the same as you do. I also read comments about Solange and her big chop. I was so sad. Thank god for youtube because I see a lot of videos about locs and all the styles we can rock. The loc movement is strong so watch out world. Natural hair is beautiful.
Those negative comments about Solange reflect that person's depth of self hate as well as the success that "others" have made in making us hate our natural beauty. I am proud to be a MAVERICK and in LOVE with my NATURAL BEAUTY. LOC POWER.
you go girl! Tell it! i've learned so many stlyes from your videos today, that i can't wait to try. Thank You!

I just did the big chop and I cried like a baby. Thanks for this vid, because I needed to hear this.

Having esteem in our own beauty is the first step, then it's nutrition, then it's how you view relationships, raise your children etc. and a lot of what we discover goes against the stereotypes.

she looks beautiful i believe that we naturally start to glow when we fully accept ourself ... and i find her very courageous cuz as a celebrity it's very hard to choose your own appearance i really admire that.
about the BC I agree with BG ^^100%

I love the the way you think about the subject. The natural journey is very difficult but it is a process to accept and love your OWN NATURAL hair. I cringe when people ask why i want to have my natural hair. Like you said, "What's wrong with MY own natural hair?" I feel like people think that I don't look as pretty with my own hair> As Black women, sometimes our view upon ourselves, our hair, is so jaded and so one-track and so negative!
cinnabun77 1 year ago 5
@cinnabun77 Remember the influence of living in a world where one race has dominated for hundreds of years. Their idea of beauty also dominates. That's why there's skin-bleaching,hair straightening and shame of noses being horizontal and not vertical that have developed as the standards of beauty. It's nonsense, but we have to be patient with our sisters (and brothers, who DEMAND these standards from the sisters) and give them time to wake up. It will take long, 'cause it's been long.

MochaKnitster007 1 year ago 11
@MochaKnitster007 they were hating on Janet too and i was wondering, whats the big deal, woman decide to go natural, but ppl prefer her fake. what is this world coming to?

I've had locs for three years and I never had to do a big chop. My hair has been natural my entire life minus all the pressing combs and ponytails.
briofthed 1 year ago
One more comment: I recommend the book HAIR STORY for anyone who wants to know the history of our hair or is considering the big chop. The one thing that sticks out to me in the book is right in the beginning (I think it's the beginning) it talks about how slaves would put lard and butter in their hair to make it straight to look more European and to be accepted by the slave owners. Those were the first "relaxers". And every time I get one put in my head I think about that.
MissAudrey0275 1 year ago
Thank you so much for being so open and honest about this subject. It's so funny that some of us think going back to our roots is a bad thing (for the lack of a stronger phrase) when the bad thing is trying to stay away from our roots as much as possible. Thanks again for speaking on this subject.
MissAudrey0275 1 year ago
I couldn't even get through your entire video because you were speaking so much SENSE. Although my hair is relaxed, I am seriously in the process of going back to my roots (literally). I think it's unfortunate that we as Black people have been made to believe that something we were ORIGINALLY born with is so retched. It's even sadder that some of us don't see it as a sign of an almost self-hatred, that was "instilled" in our ancestors when they were brought over to this country.
MissAudrey0275 1 year ago

WE ARE BOLD AND STRONG AND BEAUTIFUL! oh and another thing is "WE LOOK LIKE THIS WHEN WE WAKE UP!" ha ha ha. im loving it. i have gotten a lot of comments being loc'd. and what i love is no one can have the "SAME" hair as me like the chics in the salon all gettin the same style hair.
toyalovesfrancis 1 year ago
Hey Lock-sistah :) I get you and appreciate the way you brought that all together. :) The 'big chop' is not about being different or being a rebel, but in the greater sense it's about being freed to go in whatever direction the Lord wants to lead you (whether that be permed, natural, being a chef or accountant); it's about doing what needs to be done to get where you're meant to be. Great vid. Q.

SavvyPearl 1 year ago
WORD!!! I could not have said it better. People are afraid of anything that is different. By not conforming to typical beauty standards and going for the big chop, Solange asserts her personal strength and commitment to her journey. If down the road she chooses to weave it, dye it, perm it, or whatever, she will have gained some knowledge of self from going through this process the way she wanted to do it.
briggspice 1 year ago
I didn't know your vlog was about Solange's big chop. I think she looks beautiful and has her own unique look that separates her from her sister. What I want to add is that her music is a very soulful R&B.
I believe 100% in the big chop. My hair took one year to grow back to it's permed length. Healthy...no permed ends straggling around. My only regret is that I locked it right away instead of getting to know my natural texture more which is a looser curl pattern.

Jenna1814 1 year ago
Most of the people that wanted her to get a perm or weave were probably from the south. When I came to the south (texas) from NYC I had my natural hair. I was told by one simple minded person that my hair looked terrible and I should get a perm. It seems that they are still enslaved in the south especially here in texas. I wear a wig now just so people would leave me alone. It's bad here in texas. 1% on the population is natural.

EXACTLY and what is so sad is that other races embrace our natural beauty. Why can't we? Great Vlog!

I hear ya. whatever you want to do you need to nurture it. make it grow. nothing is easy.
I do despise when people say I can't do a big chop because i have a big head...or that just won't look right on me
those statements are not true because how do you know? everything is as good as you feel about it.

You are the truth! I was about to cry when you was talking about TD Jakes! People alwasy trying to hate on Natural Women...smh.
NaturallySarah 1 year ago

Anywhooo you looking fly as always my sista x

@PROUDAME Yes I so agree with you : I do think that european straight hair DOSEN'T suit our features!
Thanks for saying it
Pearllkavasky 1 year ago
@PROUDAME really what kind and why..now i am really scared to grow locks..but I only live once.. I think i am more frightened of not being able to get a job, and having to shave my head completely bald and wear wigs..horrific..I hate fake hair..and just the thought makes me cringe...
KMELIZ21 1 year ago
@KMELIZ21 no don't feel that way sis, locs demand attention and unfortunatley some of our own people don't know how to take individuals who are confident and unconcerned about what mainstream society says is ok. i think natural hair says a lot about a persons mindset, locs are a growth of your hair and mind, so once you're ready you'll find that what other people say really won't concern you.
PROUDAME 1 year ago
And yea... when people acknowledge my locs I feel really good for all the work i put in... cuz yea 4 years is quite a while. I got more compliments with them than i ever did with a relaxer. Your hair is beautiful btw.

Great vid!
I love the look! I saw comments about her chop too and they really disturbed me. People always have something negative to say when someone goes against 'the norm'.always!! Anywhere! Such a shame that weave among black celebs is the norm.
JRenneaC 1 year ago

MsCandace25 1 year ago
you are not being too sensitive or over dramatic! Its only hair for crying out loud!!
themukisa11 1 year ago
I needed that word girl! I did just come for the "real talk" but you started preaching girl!!!!! That's what I have learned so far this year, I am only obligated to please God and if you don't fall in line with that....oh well. Thank you so much for what you do. :-)

I feel the same as you do. I also read comments about Solange and her big chop. I was so sad. Thank god for youtube because I see a lot of videos about locs and all the styles we can rock. The loc movement is strong so watch out world. Natural hair is beautiful.

you are so awesome! I love this post, I felt the same way when I saw the Solange pics! Love your videos! You are my locspiration! :D
yahvinah1 1 year ago
Those negative comments about Solange reflect that person's depth of self hate as well as the success that "others" have made in making us hate our natural beauty. I am proud to be a MAVERICK and in LOVE with my NATURAL BEAUTY. LOC POWER.
