That seems a fun event, but I don't completely understand the charity. They raise money to buy mattresses for people who don't have mattresses? Is that a lot of people? Presumably they have a house but no mattress?

You have it right. A lot of people can qualify for low income housing but don't have the nessisary resources for filling the house up with the beds they need- especially for small children. :) So this charity helps it that. Karen (Good question)

The hard 'o' is from most of the rest of the state. Plus there has been massive population growth which usually has the effect of flattening accents.
