Its not better that GL's version and cerytainly not better than PP&M's version. Its proof that any GL song can be interpreted in many differnt ways. Get a grip ppl. Dylan said that when he hears a GL song he never wants it to end.
Let everyone who wants to put their spin on GL songs cos they are so stong that they take the strain and shine though, every time.
Good Job Paul Weller. You have added another layer to the legend of this song.
@BOYBLUE444 Yep...as I mellow he, I realise, mellowed too. Was it him or me...yep, it was him and I'm lovin the way our roads wend....next time I look, of our lives it WILL be a beautiful end.
(To the prat who said awful...your biased and deaf in one ear, Gordon is great...but have you ever heard of Paul Weller?)
having heard both the original and wellers version, i must say i like pauls version better lyric wise, but thats just me. great song whoever sings it in my mind !!!!!!
elvis version is better? what planet are u on my friend,i saw elvis take a shit on stage... are u 4 real! how can it compare to perfect arrangement soulful voice and sweet accompainiment. yes elvis was special but his version cannot possibly compare to mr weller's- special m8
Back in 1971 I saw Elvis Presley have a shit on stage, I gotta say that it ws the best shit I had ever seen at that point, whats more I have never seen such a fantastic shit since. Its hard to convey just how superb it was, boy was that a great shit.
Ive never seen Paul Weller take a dump on stage but I think that it would have to be something very special indeed to match that dump by the King...
I like Elvis' version, but hands down I give it to Tommy Makem. He said: "When we think of ballads or folk music, we have a tendency to think in terms of the long-ago and far-away. When you hear songs about the old whaling ships and the clipper ships with the lovely names like "The Flying Cloud" and ship lines that were called "The Black Ball Line," it is hard to think that today a beautiful lonesome song can be written about the majesty of a great big silver bird called the 707.
With all due respect to everybody else's opinion, I really like Paul Weller's version. As he's aged, his voice has developed a weathered, world-weary quality that seems to perfectly fit the mood painted by the lyrics. In his younger "Jam" days, I don't think that he could have sung this song convincingly. It's the type of song he needed to grow into. My son and I saw Weller, in Washington, D.C., two or three years ago and it was a memorable show.
@Shesmad - Yes, it is now - it was released a couple of years ago on a great live sessions album, 'At the BBC'; it's a really brilliant collection of quite a few different BBC radio sessions Paul's done over the years.
I'm so pleased this track's been released on CD - I remember hearing it on
Mark Lamarr's show on Radio 2 a few years back and I've been desperate ever since to hear it again, it's a really great cover.
Nice interpretation of the chord changes, but I have to agree, he's missing half the melody of the vocal. To me, this just isn't Weller's type of song. He really doesn't seem to grasp the moment that the song is in. I'd rather see an interpretation by somebody like Paul Westerberg or somebody else like that. Honestly, I still think the best cover version is still Peter, Paul & Mary.
This has got to be my all time favourite weller cover although the Studio150 album had some other crackers on it (Wishing on a star, thinking of you, Along the watchtower and one way road) . Nice work man. I attempted to cover this and have tried to post it as a video response here so you guys might be able to see it. If not check my page out.
Cheers man to all and how i have enjoyed writting this message to such a quality tune.
A heart-felt performance and a nice voice. Too bad he doesn't know the tune. He has changed the original melody and reduced the beauty of Lightfoot's composition to a dull repetition of his own invention. Thumbs down.
this is good, very good

For all those looking to pick fights, there seem to be so great versions: PPM, Eva Cassidy (love the guitar work especially) as well as Lightfoot.

i kind of know what you mean, but i recommend a few listens. the problem is, most people parrot the song almost note for note like the original.
this is the most interpretive of the versions i've heard.
