Peace with God can only come through the atoning blood of Jesus, not through communion. A person must enter a relationship with God through repentance and faith in the shed blood. Communion is simply a remembrance of the shed blood and broken body of Jesus for the believer.
That's funny, cause I always thought my faith was centered in the resurrection of Christ which, by my reckoning, reconciles my penitence with eternal life. But since the song doesn't mention resurrection, should I write it off as ill-focused?
On a side note, I wonder what'll happen if I get to heaven only to find out that transubstantiation was legit. I guess I'll let out a big 'oops', and continue on my way. Until then, who am I to suggest the sacraments are anything so simple as a remembrance?
Rich leaned very much towards Catholicism and alot of his lyrics and artwork on albums, etc. reflect that. That's what set him apart, his humility and Catholic perspective.
Could you be a little more specific - perhaps a LINK to the statement you are referring to? I did a quick search and found nothing. All that I have read about Rich does not lead me to conclude that he was that 'mysterious...' The music for this song is very similar to if you took the well-known "Linus and Lucy" Charlie Brown theme, slowed it down a bit with some modifications, making it your own...
