There is a famous line: If the Arabs put down their weapons there would be peace. If Israel put down their weapons there would be no more Israel. I can see the reasoning that those countries politicians want to protect their banks, but what they are doing to the Greeks for the past two years is awful. I don't think the EU will work. @TASSOS502 I do think Merkel and Sarkozy are trying to protect their banks, so I they are in a difficult position. I don't think they are intentionally trying to bring down Greece, they have their voters to face and can't make the wrong move. It is just a problem with the EU in general. Greece should devalue the currency to help with the debt, but other countries don't want to do that because of inflation concerns. It is a tough situation to be in.
Forget the EU, Iran is already the master of Greece. We are 80% dependent on Iranian oil, Iran accounts for 55% of foreign investment in Greece (no one else wants to do business with us), 40% of all foreclosed properties in Greece have been purchased by Iranian businessmen, and Greece has been cajoled into a military alliance with an Iran that could overpower it in less than a month. Many of us are calling Greece the Province of West Iran!

There is a famous line: If the Arabs put down their weapons there would be peace. If Israel put down their weapons there would be no more Israel. Many Muslims want war, movements such as BDS helps violent views of Israel, Israel (and Arabs) make money/power off the war, no trust on either side, extremists on both sides ruling over the silent majorities, etc. Unfortunately, I don't see a peaceful ending. It's too bad because there is so much good potential.

@TASSOS502 I do think Merkel and Sarkozy are trying to protect their banks, so I they are in a difficult position. I don't think they are intentionally trying to bring down Greece, they have their voters to face and can't make the wrong move. It is just a problem with the EU in general. Greece should devalue the currency to help with the debt, but other countries don't want to do that because of inflation concerns. It is a tough situation to be in.

To be sure, the overspending on our part was a major factor, but a lot of blame also has to go to US, French and German lending companies that fudged numbers and lied about conditions to lure us into greater debt for their own profit. And now the EU abandons us after their two key members took part in this deception? Sad to say, but a lot of Greeks are looking to Iran as a deliverer. Alas, the trap has done its work.

By the way, since when are foreigners allowed to buy Greek property? I was always told that they couldn't. I'm part Greek, but my Greek grandparents left Greece for North Africa in the late 1800s leaving me with no legal Greek ties to the country.
