= ] Great! Always enjoyed Marty's forecasts back in the day; the cats wandering through the shot, the felt icons on the display, his accent & his smile! Thanks Marty, & thanks y'all for remembering him.
Anyone who remembers Marty or wants to know more about him should read his book, "Marty on the Mountain: 38 Years on Mount Washington" by Martin Engstrom. You can order it on the Mount Washington Observatory's web site.
I grew up in NH in the 1960's and remember watching Marty all the time. I always loved his smile at the end of the segment! Now, on the other side of the country in the San Francisco Bay Area I am thrilled to watch his last broadcast. Thanks, Marty! And good luck in whatever you do next.
Climbing Mt. Washington and meeting Marty was memorable. He proved to be a gentle and gracious soul - showed around the studio and introduced us to his cat. hats off Marty
I remember one time Marty was reading the weather report and the cat crossed between him and the camera. He paused, watch the cat cross the screen and then picked up from where he left off.
From 1969 thru 1973 we summered on Lake Winnisquam. My friend and I waterskied from sun up till the dinner hour. Our mothers would call us repeatedly to come in and it was not until we thought of the "weatherman" doing the news would we signal the boat driver to take us in. To this day that is the only broadcast that I have rushed to the set to see.
I remember way back in 1973 when I first moved to NH watching Marty on an old b/w tv with aluminum foil on the rabbit ears. At first, I thought his mannerisms and accent was some kind of schtick. I quickly learned that he was the real deal and have thouroughly enjoyed his missives on the mount. God bless him and his family and hope that we haven't seen the last of him.
Marty (and the cat walking around on the desk) were wonderful and unforgettable! I, too, watched him growing up. Just ordered the book as a gift for my parents. Too bad everyone on TV these days is so coiffed and perfect. You don't get true originals like Marty anymore.
Man, Ive lived "away" now for years and seeing Marty for that last time almost made me want to cry man. We used to do "Marty" impersonations on the bus when I was a kid, with that big deliberate grin at the end.
God Bless ya Marty, youve left those of us in the North Country who moved away with good feelings about home.
Now, I just dont want to hear that Ray Terry from WPOR's "The Big Deal" retired too!
Is there any chance you have the clip from a few months ago when Charlie Lopresti from Ch.13 caught up w/ Marty? I watched it but just didn't tape it...
We Stopped getting WMTW TV here in Vermont in the mid 90's so I often wondered what happened to Marty. Before we got cable in my small town all I could get was WMTW.
Thanks for posting this! I miss Marty's weather reports from the Mountain and his sign-off smile. He wrote a book called "My 38 Years on the Moutnain", and it's a great read!

We used to crack up at that guy and his smile at the end of the broadcast. And sometimes he'd be holding his cat. LOL

I used to hunt at a deer camp in Wallingford Vt. Guys would leave a dinner of (very)fresh venison just to watch Marty do the forecast.
