@Aussiemarco I was surprized when I heard about it myself. All we can pray for is a director who's a real fan of the original who gives a damn about it and good historical consultants too, if they're going to remake this.
they say Claudius survived cause he was somehow more intelligent and a better pol than the rest but I think he made it because everyone thought he was an idiot therefore noone saw him as a threat. Without the disabilities he too would have been toast
@sondano Claudius actually *looked* normal - a tall and physically fit man. It was only when he walked or talked or twitched that you could recognize it.
@sondano They might exaggerate his physical problems, but more generally he appeared to be perfectly normal if he was just sitting down but as soon as he talked or walked you could see something was amiss. That's why they didn't have to *hide* him, only keep him out of interacting at functions.
You would have thought Charlton Heston could hold his own with this cast.....if he'd been cast, we would be watching this documentary now.....the show would have flopped big time.
i agree...the hbo series was great!....but what i wouldnt do with a few million pounds to digitally remaster this series,..also get derek jakobie and brian blessed to reprise theyr parts!!.it'd be..ammmazing..;)))..(not that it isnt allready!!
As far as their slaves are concerned, they most certainly did, converse ( conversari ) with them. Quite often, these people would become almost part of the family and even marry members of said family. Odd that they didn't seem to know these common facts of Roman life? Certainly some slaves were treated like wallpaper, but house slaves on the whole, were not. I mean, their not a packet of Crisps.
I'm rather surprised by some of their remarks. The Romans did not wipe their buttocks with their hands, left or right! They did on the other hand, ( :o) ) use sea sponges to for that purposes.
I saw this series on DVD few months ago then. I was weary first because I thought "oh no, series about Romans, who cares?" but it had Derek Jacobi, whom I had seen as Frollo in 1980's version of Hunchback of Notre Dame and thought he was brilliant. So because of him I watched it. Thank God I did. Wonderful series. Every actor suits his/her part. Far better than any epic million dollar Roman empire movie.
Most Roman Epics were about huge sets and battles, as well as the romance between the leading man and lady. Even to this day its treated as such, this was a fantastic effort and the HBO Rome was the only thing that approached it in terms of character development.
in his wikipedia it says he has one the most "outstanding speaking voices ever with studied tonality and an exceptional elocution in drama" he sounds like a regular british dude to me i expected a James Earl Jones type voice only british but it sounds regular to me
"I, Claudius" made me a life-long Derek Jacobi fan. Not only did I recently rent all the episodes on Netflix, but when I was done I went through the complete "Cadfael" series, in order (of course).

The conversation Claudius has with Livia is like every conversation i've had with every member of my family as far as my acting is concerned (no-one has actually seen me act as a result) I'm considered the idiot of my family and that nothing gd will ever come out of me. After i saw "I, Claudius" i took the advice in it (exageratting my disabilities) and continuing my work which has led me far :) This piece of drama has been a huge inspiration to me. True genious.
I kind of know what you mean, when I was a kid I had a horrible stutter and the other kids made fun of me. I saw I Claudius when I was too young. When Claudius came on I thought he would be the first one to die, it gave me hope that he outlived and outsmarted everyone. Don't have a stutter anymore.
best show ever i loved it awesome actors

I hope HBO/BBC's remake of 'I, Claudius' does the original justice and expands more on the story of the Julio-Claudian family.

@OutlawCongress I'm not sure how to imagine that combination LOL. So what you say is that in I, Claudius they actually exaggerate his disabilities?

@warghost both Jacobi and James Earl Jones sound totally unremarkable to me. Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart have the most epic voices
