So NOW they realize they really need airbags and in somewhere around 2006 and 2007, they build side curtain airbags. I have one question, when did they build the front passenger airbag?

@hoteliwinshowcases In 1991 for the upcoming 1993 Dodge Intrepid and other LH platform cars debuting at the January 1992 NAIAS. Those are the first Chryslers to have dual airbags.

This commercial is not true. The K-cars were still around in 1989 (their final year), but without airbag. However the M-body (Fifth Avenue/Diplomat/Gran Fury) sedans had them (in their last year as well). The Omni/Horizon got one in 1990, their final year.

@R36Coach not sure about this but I think the loophole is the word "US" . Some of the cars made in Canada didn't have air bags, for example, the Eagle Premier or Dodge Monaco. I could be wrong but the K cars were made I think in Windsor Ont. Canada.

@OsbornTramain In '89 M-bodies were built at the AMC plant in Kenosha, K-cars at Detroit (Jefferson Av), Newark, DE and Toluca, Mexico. Omni/Horizon was built at Belvidere, IL.

my moms '86 mercedes 300 e had an airbag. though this is a german vehicle, it was still one of the only cars that were brought to the us at the time to include airbags if im not mistaken. anyway, i feel old =] i was born in '89. to see only one airbag.... HA!

An American had the first Patent in 1953. Ford had Airbags in Fords used by the government in 1971. GM started selling Airbags in Buicks, Oldsmobiles and Cadillacs in 1975. Mercedes offered them with seat belt tighteners in 1980. All US cars had them by 1989. I can find no reference to Volvo having any impact on the creation of Airbags. Volvo's are great cars if I do say so myself.

all US cars did not have airbags by 1989. alot of US cars didn't even have them till mid-late 90's. GM was one of the latest to put airbags in its cars. but all cars sold in the US by 1998 where required by law to have dual front airbags. with the exception of some "exotic" cars, truck, and work vehicles.

GM was also the first to offer an airbag in one of it's vehicles...... way back in 1973 (for passenger) and 1975 (for driver).

They were not offered again for sale in the US until Ford offered it as an option for the Tempo... in 1984.

Back then, safety didn't sell, and nobody wanted to buy one.

wow really??i thought the tempo/topaz only offered a airbag starting in the late 80s or 90s hmm really?? i never thought the 1984 tempo had the optional airbag..it never said anything like that in the commercial and i have talked to so many people with those old 84-85 tempos and they said theres never had an airbag...i loved the 84-85 tempos the most though they were good cars the body's were very strong on them i have a 92 topaz but i would still love to find an old 84-85 tempo or topaz

@95Ford06 and tempo still never had a driver side airbag standard in it's lifespan. heck it was still an option even in their last model year back in 94.

okej. but volvo was the first car that had side airbags in there cars i think so i mixed it up :P. I love volvo as well but now it goes rumors about a chinese company is buying volvo. Saftey is volvos priority and we have all seen chinese crash test :P.

they were one of the first innovators of the Side Airbag: S.I.P.S (Side Impact Protection System) in '94 i think

I disagree. A Plymouth/Dodge/Chrysler minivan did not have them until 1991. However Volvo is a great car just expensive to maintain.

And in this case, they are making a claim about their "Cars"....not "Vans". Always hated the Isuzu Commercials where they claimed that they only made "Trucks" for the USA and were experts cause that's all they sold. Which to me wasn't true, they just didn't sell Cars in the USA. When in reality, nobody wanted their cars lol Lawyer!

Jeep Wrangler had driver and passenger airbags from 1997.

You are correct but the Eagle Talon was made by Diamond Star Motors, not by Chrysler Corporation. So even though it was sold thru Eagle Dealers, all cars manufactured by Chrysler did have air bags.

Man I remember my dad having an airbag on his 1985 BMW 5 series. I guess the U.S. and Japan automakers were late to the game even on their luxury cars.

GM offered Airbags as an option on some of their cars. Oldsmobiles I believe in 1977 or 1978. They invented the technology. Americans were slow to want to purchase it. It was very common for Used Oldsmobile drivers in the 80's to have air bags go off in accidents when they didn't even know their cars were equipped that way. Would have been quite surprising.

my neighbor had a chrysler le baron from '89 and his airbags deployed out of the blue.. he was pissed...last time he ever bought a chrysler built auto... this was back in '97

Yeah, they had a big recall regarding that in 1998-1999, I remember. Those random deployments were causing crashes obviously. That seems kinda scary, doesn't it? The airbag just deploying like that... :S
