In theory, travel takes a long time. They may of came to earth 10,000 years ago but then they had to go back to their planet, and as time goes as you travel through space (unless you can travel faster than light, information would still be the what they encountered) when they come back they would right in the ancient language. So, if we got found a language which used the same symbol as the crop circle we could translate, or tell if it is a hoax. Though i could be very wrong :)
